Here is the same video, although there is an ad that's almost as long as the video
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...&ir=Technology
It's the Navy's Railgun.

"shoots projectiles 7 times the speed of sound"
Holy hell.
Speed of Sound: 1,126 ft/s
x7
7,882 ft/s
That's about a mile and a half a second...
90 miles a minute...
or
5400 miles per hour.

Well, like any new technology it's going to have bugs to work out, but to launch something that fast with electro-magnetics is pretty fascinating. I wonder how many al-queda members that would go through before it stopped? a few thousand I'd guess. Wonder what the range on that sucker is?
Popular Science ran an article years ago about using the same technology to launch spacecraft, by running a tube up a mountain. They'd have to tame the g-force down a lot if they wanted to launch humans. I guess that's why they'd use a mountain, to have plenty of room to accelerate a g-force humans could withstand.

Thunder, I am no longer going to referrer to you as a gun nerd. From this day forward you, sir, are a mathlete! Well done.

Holy Shikes!
I wonder how the projectile stays together at that speed? that is a serious weapon. It's going to take a bunch of cows to make a hoster for that big gun!

Sorry for my crappy spelling. I guess I got too excited about that gun! I hit the submit button too quick. I meant to say:
It's going to take a bunch of cows to make a holster for that big gun!
I think Jocko is rubbing off on me!
