View Full Version : Finished some projects

Though I've worked diligently to perfect the art of procrastination since I retired, I guess it was inevitable that I would still occasionally complete some projects. Here are a few that fit in there:
I've had this CVA kit rifle for some years. It was a little threadbare when I got it; yellow mystery finish (maybe Tru-Oil) with quite a few dings and a rusted, bare metal barrel. Last year I broke it down and experimented with some stain made from RIT dye and rubbing alcohol. I wasn't sure how that was going to work out and sat it aside until recently. It's done now:

The next two are mostly wood related. The Rossi side by side had a really rough finish and a poor fitting butt plate. I also found the stock had cracked internally in the lock area. Fixed the crack and butt plate, then applied an oil finish:

My Romanian M1969 trainer developed some cracks in the stock where the cleaning kit is stored. I glued/reinforced the cracks and refinished the stock with wipe on poly to mimic the old varnish finish:

Last year, I put my 22/45 on consignment at a local shop. It didn't take long to come to my senses and return for it, but unfortunately, it suffered some damage while there. Cold blue covered the marks, but it bugged me whenever I handled it. I decided to make amends several nights ago: cleaned up the marks, showed it some love with the media blaster, and dunked it in the pakerizing pot:

Finally: got some .45ACP ready for the range :):

Anyone else finished any projects lately?

Greg

Oops, forgot two:
This might be of interest to any with a SIG P6, I installed a P225 mainspring and it makes a world of difference in the double action pull plus it slightly improves the single action (not bad for a $3.20 part):

I also put a MOJO peep sight on one of my Nagants;

Most of my projects have been of the home improvement variaty. I did mangage to rebuild an M1 Garand that I picked up at Military surplus store. I originally bought it to shoot blanks with at Military funerals where I do volonteer work. I picked through about 40 M1's and bought the one that I thought had the best reciever on it and seemed to hand cycle the best. The inside of the barrel I was not to concerned about. However after I got into repairing this piece of what I call American Pie, and started shooting blanks I discovered that this thing is more than capable of shooting live rounds. I ran into some people at gun shows who were more than happy to help me with this project and I learned quite a bit from them. Some Veterians in the business even donated parts or gave them to me at a much reduced price when they found out what I was using the rifle for. 4981
It has been a pure joy to bring this old weapon back into service to the country and to honor our military Brother and Sisters who are on there final mission, that actually used them in time of war. It is my most cherished piece even if she is not the prettiest or most accurate rifle I own. It is an M1 Garand there are many like, it but this one is My M1 Garand.:D When people see me shooting it, they usually ask me how accurate it is, I give them a smile and say you wouldn't want to be a school bus at 100yds ,Because I might hit ya with a full clip. It's actually more accurate then that but I like to mess with there heads. If I tell them it's to accurate then they want to shoot it. Only a chosen few have ever shot it besides me.

Well that really ought to mess with their heads and probably get you on the watch list (if you are not there already).

Thanks for the comments folks:)
Popeye,
That's a fine looking M1, congrats on the rebuild. I enjoyed the story behind it as well and thank you for for your service in laying our Veterans to rest.

I really wish that you hadn't posted this thread as it reminds me of all of the stuff I've been putting off due to the last 8 months of contract work that I've had to do.

Also, just found out that I'm going to the Falkland Islands on the 26th of December. Only one flight a week from Santiago, Chile, one military charter a week and one charter flight every 2 weeks. Guess which flight I'm on!

Right, the every 2 weeks flight!

I've still got stuff waiting for me, but I'm off shooting today:D
I hope you have a safe trip. I'd wouldn't mind a short visit to the Falklands to see the battlefields. I dealt with both countries armed forces when I was on active duty and I liked quite a few of them on an individual basis. I hope those folks made it through that tussle.

Greg

MW surveyor The comment was you wouldn't want to be a school bus (as in size)not on a school bus. Please read it as printed. LOL

Got so wrapped up in trying to get a picture on there. I forgot to mention that those rifles are sweet looking. I'm also buying a Ruger MKIII 22/45 after the holidays. I like the one with the removable grips. Heck yours looks like a brand new pistol.
Thanks for the kind words also. It's just something I feel I have to do, nothing heroic, and trust me I get more out of it than I could ever give. That and it gave me a good excuse to buy a Garand.:D

Popeye - Oops, sorry about that. But it still would put you on the watch list anyway! :)

greg - I'd go shooting today but #1 - it is raining here #2 - got to do a few projects on the house before Christmas company comes over #3 - have to fit the new magwell on the 1911 and #4 - get some thinner base plates for the 45 mags so that they fit into the magwell!

Will probably get some time onshore to look around as the boat doesn't get there until the 1st of January!

Got a new FAL that I am doing some stuff to. Once I get everything the way I want, I will be doing another one of my Krylon camo projects over our holiday vacation. I have had really good results with some neat patterns. I know paint is not as durable as a real finish, but I like the end look being much like what you see our boys doing with their kit in the sand box. I will post some pics if it turns out presentable.

I look forward to seeing your FAL John. I really enjoy looking at other folks handiwork. I've found some pretty good ideas/techniques while doing so. FWIW, I use Krylon BBQ paint to touch up my Saiga .308. The whole FSB is done with. The original one must have been drilled and pinned on "Vodka Friday" at the factory. That resulted in one of the pins coming through the top of the base instead of the side. I had to call/email around to shops that do custom AK work to find a "take off" replacement part.

Hey Wynn,
Thanks:)

Greg

Sounds like a nice little project John, Looking foward to seeing the pics.
My project for yesterday was washing one of the dogs. That little turd maker rolled in something. Good grief was enough to gag a magot. Hate to disapoint you all but the camera isn't water proof so don't be looking for any Pics. You'll just have to take my word for it.;)

He's still around on the various forums (teachtech). Your pistol looks good with the grips and magazine bases, but I'm satisfied with the size of the frame as is (I might add some of his magazine bases to the mix). I see you've the Volquartsen trigger on your 22/45 as well: excellent product.
What did you use on the front sight?

Is the Ruger suppressed?
Naw, it's the loud version:)
