Hey guys. I just took apart my cm9 to install my wolff striker spring and found flakes of plating inside the striker channel and on the striker. Is this normal for a new gun?

Have you shot it yet at all? I clean out that channel every 3rd trip or so because of that coming from cheaper fmj ammo. If you haven't shot it then it could very well have been test fired at factory.

It's not unusual to find debri in the striker channel although I suspect it's machining debri rather than plating or possibly primer smear residue. Do you see anyplace where the flakes might have come from inside.
We had heard of this and when I got my PM45 I intentionally tore it apart to see inside and mine happened to be squeaky clean and lightly oiled. Others have found stuff that actually inhibited the striker movement causeing failures, light strikes etc.
Unless you see obvious signs of plating falling off some place I'd clean it up good, leave the striker channel dry or at best use a dry lube, or I oil and then wipe it all off, doesn't do a thing but makes me feel good and your on the track.

Yes I've fired several hundred rounds through it, but how could flakes of nickle plating in the striker channel come from ammo?

You didnt specify nickel color I get little gold metal flakes all the time just an easy thing to rule out. Not trying to insult your intelligence but I don't have any way of knowing your firearm experience so just starting simple.

No offense. I'm pretty much a beginner to the handgun world. There are some gold colored flakes, but there is for sure a piece of plating chipped off of the corner of the striker spacer.

Yeah I figured that too from nicer HP stuff but figured Bawanna may know more than me so I just threw in the towel. Keep it clean great little gun.

I have been shooting some hornady critical defense which has a nickel plated case.

I'll just flush it out good and shoot a couple hundred rounds through it and see what it looks like.

If its new send them a photo in email they should send you a new one in the mail somebody smarter than me will have advice on whether it will affect shooting it currently. I doubt it since it must not have done so yet. Merry Xmas.

Bawanna ain't smarter than just about anybody.
I don't think you really have an issue dshideler, I'd clean everything up pretty and put it back together. When you clean after shooting use the little clean out hole in the bottom of the slide towards the breech face and flush it out with brake cleaner or gun scrubber. You can push down the stirker block and stuff will flush out both ends, just a short little blast will clean it all out. I seldom tear mine down although I'd be tempted to maybe do so once in awhile just to see how much really accumulates in there.

My pm9 has some plating coming off of the striker. I think it is Teflon Nickel.

I shoot WWB FMJ, and I've found brass (?) flakes in the striker channel.
I just cannot imagine what kind of mechanical action can produce that result!

Imagine this:
The striker hits the primer, knocking some flakes loose.
The bullet fires, sending the slide backward at a very high speed.
There is also some striker drag that occurs.
When the slide reaches the end of its travel and comes to a very sudden stop, loose metal flakes near the striker channel get jammed in there by inertia.

Very ingenious! But why do the flakes look like brass ("gold"-like)?

Some primers are plated brass?

Factory brass has burrs on the case mouth both inside and out.
These brass slivers get scraped off the top round in the mag by the slide and end up everywhere.

Definitely coming off the bullets.

Does this happen only in Kahr, or all striker semi-autos like Glock? I've never seen brass flakes in my Colt 1911.

Happens to a lot of them. Haven't seen it in my 1911 but have seen it in my ex-3PAT and my ex-Taurus PT111.
Can't tell you about the Glock cuse I don't own one.
