View Full Version : How long does it take to sell a used gun?

Have only sold one handgun in my life, and that one was a 5 year old NIB Ruger Redhawk 44 that sold the day I listed it on our local trader board.

I've had my CW 40 on there for several weeks, had over 700 page hits, but not a single hit (other than some dude who wanted to trade me a 38 snubby straight up). Just listed my XDM 40 also, and no bites there, despite pricing it WELL below market.

Was I just really lucky the first time? I would like to get one or both of these guns gone, so I can (without guilty feelings) pick up a PPQ for my new full size.

Not a marketing ploy, just looking to gain experience and wisdom from the wise old sages here. :D

Send me a pm about the xdm. I'm gonna guess this is a hard time to sell guns. people are broke from Christmas and what I'm told is a bad economy (even though Amazon sold millions of their new tablets). You could also try bumping it with a "NEW REDUCED PRICE" at $10 less too.

People may be holding onto their money at Christmas time. One thing I've found that seems to help sell guns is clear photos. Show off the gun, show accessories, show the warts and all. Give as much detail and history of the gun as you can.

I've sold perhaps 30 of my collection over the years and folks have commented on the clear and honest descriptions I provided. I even described one gun as a "tackle box beater", and it sold because that's what the buyer was looking for. He was thrilled when the gun showed better that my description.

Good luck.

Do you have one or both guns listed here? Guns seem to sell pretty fast here if priced right. Mention the city or area you live in for a FTF sale. Make out a bill of sale and get it signed on FTF. Just remember to ask at least $35 for shipping if not FTF. You'll still have to pay some more, but at least get some of it in the sale. Gunbroker is good, too. Don't put a reserve price on it or a buy now price. Price it a little below what you think it is worth and trust the auction process to bump it up. If you price it too high. you won't get any bites. If you are real brave, start it at $1 and you're guaranteed to have a lot of bidders and a good sale price. But it is a little scary, especially because the bids won't really get going until near the end. Good hi def pictures really help a lot.

I think my record is about five minutes from the offer to the transfer, but that was a private sale.

It takes a really long time if it's overpriced.......it doesn' take long at all if it is priced right.

I have had great success both buying and selling here:

Timing and price. Generally buyers want at least 1/3 off new even if you bought it last week. IMHO a weapon looses 25% once you buy it. I go for the cheap and rarely do I come away dissappointed on the purchase by buyer refusal.

I have something they want more than I want the weapon, it is called money. I especially loved a seller in a "distressed" position, divorce, wife forced sale etc. I am an opportunistic person at heart.

Nope. I have no more wife. Thankfully she kicked me to the curb before I had to give here half my stuff. Now I gleefully life a lifestyle she cannot even dream of. Her divorcing me was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Thanks for the feedback. CW 40 is on here, don't think it's overpriced, at least compared to the other local Kahrs for sale.. I know the XDM isn't, particularly for a local sale. I certainly haven't priced them so high (in my mind) that a reasonable person wouldn't think they couldn't get a good deal. Guess I just need to be patient.

Husky44:

In Utah on KSL.com I found two used CW40 both asking $320. Generally on the said site if the gun has not sold in the first 5 days it is too high. The CW40s have been listed for 7 & 10 days. That is not a good sign for the Utah market.

New they are listing for $475 on the same site. If they are selling new for $475 I would think $320 for a good used CW40 in Utah should sell. Christmas like another post mentioned may be playing a part and I think it is in the example I provided.

If you can hold off until tax returns come in around March and April it may be a better time to list the hand gun. I have also read people who bought Christmas on credit will be making payments for up to 5 months after Christmas. If that is true hold off if you can or consider bartering. (I have heard of people bartering guns for dental work)

Good Luck
