View Full Version : New CM9 - Rough Barrel??? - UPDATE
UPDATE
I just received my CM9 back from Kahr. They replaced the barrel, and the new barrel looks great... Nice and smooth as it should be. They also reworked the extractor and it now functions as expected. I also mentioned that the mags would not drop free and they sanded / ground the ribs in the mag well so the magazines drop free now. It is a bit rough where they did this, but I'll take some fine sandpaper and smooth it a bit. I'm pleased with the service!!!! It took 2 weeks from the time I sent it in until I received it back, though the Kahr employee who typed the return shipping label transposed two of the numbers for my street, and I think that problem took FedEx several days to determine where it should go, but in the end FedEx figured it out and got it to me. :)
I just bought a CM9, which is my first Kahr (I have LOTS of other handguns, just no Kahrs). One thing I noticed when I started cleaning the little guy is that the barrel is somewhat rough with chatter marks and surface roughness. I spent 2 hours with JB's bore cleaner scrubbing and polishing the bore, which helped, but it is still no where near as smooth as the barrels of my Sigs, Smiths, Kimbers, or others....
Does anyone elses CM9 show this type of barrel roughness???
Thanks!

Kahr nickel plates the barrels, I'd go easy with the JB.

Yes, I have a new CM9 and while cleaning it for the first time I noticed the bore has a couple rough patches.
Using a light and magnifying glass it does like flaked and pitted plating to me. Now that I know Kahr uses nickel plated barrels I'm positive.
Plus in another forum someone posted pics of their new barrel with flaking plating on the feed ramp and chamber. Comments there said it is rare but does happen.
I think I'm going to call Kahr tomorrow and see if I can get it replaced.
Well, after speaking to Kahr today, it looks like I'm going to be sending my brand new CM9 back to them for the rough barrel along with extractor issues... They are at least sending a pick-up tag. Still disappointing to be sending it back without ever having fired a shot.....
I have 2 Kahrs, and the barrels are like mirrors.

You should be glad that Kahr customer service is so good.

I just sent mine back today as well.

Yes, but IMO mine shouldn't have left the factory with this defect in the first place. Kahr is a premium brand with a price tag to match. Seems like quality control should have caught this. Takes 10 seconds to look down the bore before sending it out.

I understand what you mean, and you are right, but IMO everybody can make mistakes. The important thing is to be willing to fix them.
When I got my black PM45, it was very rough, but break in rounds smoothed it out just fine. I'm guessing it was "frosted" a bit from plating.
When I got my silver PM45 (used) it was still a little rough in there, and later shooting also smoothed it out... I guess it didn't have many rounds though it.
The silver PM9 was glass smooth, and had been shot enough to polish out that nickel
Scrubbing mine with JB's bore cleaner (which is a very mild abrasive) would have done more to smooth the barrel than firing several hundred rounds, but after scrubbing it is still quite rough.... It looks worse than the barrel in my Keltec P3AT, and I considered that I considered to be only marginally acceptable. There are chatter marks, scrapes, roughness, and the edge of several of the lands are jagged and torn... Not what I would expect from Kahr, but hopefully they will replace it with a quality barrel.
Any company can occasionally have something slip through the cracks, so we'll see how they take care of the problem...
FWIW..... NONE of the Bar-Sto barrels I've got has good land edges! They use gang broach and by all accounts the leaves of the broach are floating, leaving a sort of jagged "stepped" edge for the first third of the barrel. The 9's, 10, and 45's are all like that.
But they shoot like nothin' else! So I can't complain!

I had never heard of Kahr nickel plating their barrels. When did this start? I've never noticed it on my 4 steel frame Kahrs. I noticed the PM9 I just obtained has nickel plating on the striker assembly. I saw a fair amount of nickel chips in the striker channel when I disassembled and cleaned it.
