My CW40 hung up at the range today, the cause was plastic shavings between the barrel and the slide. Also found the right front rail distorted and worn hindering the reassembly of the pistol. I contacted Kahr asking for warrenty and Jay sent a RMA number and said to ship back to Kahr. I emailed Jay saying the pistol is under warrenty and should be shipped to and from Kahr on their dime. He said warrenty does not cover shipping. I don't think this is right, and if it is not right how should l proceed?

It's their call, it's not covered under the warranty but sometimes they'll do it anyway.

Like Thunder said...It's Kahr's call.
I don't think anyone on this forum can speak for the company by telling you otherwise..

It's a pretty uneven policy. I used to be a big advocate and tell everyone to insist that Kahr pay for shipping and that the owner point out the safety aspects of carrying that weapon for self-defense. I returned my P380 twice and the PM45 four times... once the P380 was in the same box with the PM45, but Kahr paid for the returns. It costs you at least $60 to return one by FedEx home pickup... next to most expensive rate next day delivery, and Kahr pays under $30 with their corporate rate. I wish that they would at least pay with their rate and charge you their cost.
I've had several exchanges... friendly... with the last head of Customer Service... where he pointed out that return shipping wasn't included and was a case-by-case basis. It depends on who you talk to, how you explain the issue, and why they should pick up the shipping. When asked, I told him that Kahr should at least pick up shipping the first year on new guns, but that's not the rule.
That said, often the owner is not specific enough and doesn't use pictures to show the problem. I can understand Kahr not wanting to pay for shipping both ways on every minor or "perceived" problem. The rails are plastic and non-structural and shed bits and pieces which can be trimmed before they accumulate and cause jams. It's hard to picture a rail being deformed... without photographic proof. Careful and judicious trimming with a razor knife can keep the plastic rails functional before they DO cause binding or jams.

call again and retalk with Jay, maybe he had a bad day. they should pick up the gun on their dime. Be nice, explain how much it costs u to send it back where as kahr gets a much better retrun rate. I have neverr ead anywhere where it says also that the owner has to bear the cost to send back a gun for warranty. I am not saying they are legally bound to pay the postage either, as they are not but 95% of the time they do..If u bought it through a local gun shop, take it back tothem and let them send it back, they can do it 10X cheaper than u can also.

I will give it another shot today. I suspect they will have to replace the frame as the deformed rails are the metal ones in the front of the frame. This could cost me big bucks if they do, $60 to send in, $30 for return, plus Federal Firearms Dealer fee is a new ser # is involved.

Good luck man, I had to deal w/ it too. This hit-or-miss warranty rule is what keeps me from buying another pistol from them. I love both of my Kahrs and my Thompson now that the P380's up an running, but it was a big fight that I won't subject myself to again. Keep on them, it took me nearly a year, but eventually it was shipped back on their dime and replaced. I had to pay my FFL fee as the gun needed replaced, but I was fine w/ that.

In some States, the LGS will take care of the shipping if you go thru them. They are really just paying one way at half the price you'd pay.

Here is a followup on my CW40 issues.
I got in touch with Eoin, talked nice, and he agreed to pay for shipping as a customer courtesy. He stressed that normally Kahr does not pay for shipping. About a week after returning the pistol Eoin called and said the rail was broken and the barrel was pitted. Kahr decided to replace the gun. I finally was able to pick the gun up at the LGS where I bought the CW40 in 2009. He offered to waive the transfer fee, because I bought the gun from him. (I'll buy everything I can from him for that) Yesterday I got to the range to fire the new CW40 and it ran perfectly after doing the Jocko prep.
I'm one happy camper now!!!!

All's well that ends well. I wonder how many guns are sent back to Kahr due to operator error? Could that be the reason that Kahr doesn't always pay for shipping? They are in business to make money.
