BATFE Denies Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Associations Request Concerning NICS Exemption :31:

On January 6, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) informed the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association that they would NOT be grandfathering concealed carry weapons (CCW) permit holders whose permits were either granted or renewed on or before July 1, 2011, from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for firearm purchases.

As reported in previous alerts (http://www.nramedia.org/t/366254/52471304/9384/0/), the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association sent a letter to BATFE requesting that CCW permit holders who had received their permits prior to the July 1, 2011 enactment date of Assembly Bill 282 (http://www.nramedia.org/t/366254/52471304/2740/0/), be allowed to enjoy the NICS exemption retroactively, provided a background check was conducted upon renewal. This exemption was requested since all seventeen county sheriffs were in compliance with the standards by BATFE long before AB 282 went into effect and the sheriffs provided sworn affidavits to the BATFE stating that every permit issued in the past five years was NICS compliant.

Unfortunately, that request was denied by the BATFE, leaving July 1, 2011 as the “dividing line” effective date. For those pre-July 1st permit holders who would like to enjoy the NICS exemption earlier than their renewal date, please contact your county Sheriff and request they issue a permit renewal prior to the 120-day policy currently required for renewals (contact information is provided below).

Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the Fourth Annual CCW Forum taking place next Tuesday, January 17 in Las Vegas. The forum will be teleconferenced to locations in Carson City and Elko; for more details, please click here (http://www.nramedia.org/t/366254/52471304/9313/0/). Your input and participation is extremely important.

Nevada CCW holders just need to go to Mexico and pretend to be drug smugglers.
BATFE will provide them with a free weapon, no questions asked.
