View Full Version : Have you spent more on guns, or on ammo?

I have definitely spent more on guns than on ammo - by a wide margin - so I am curious if this is "normal" or not.

In my case, I really like the guns themselves and am always thinking about the next one(s) on my wish list, while unfortunately I just don't have enough time to go out and use them as much as I'd like. So my "problem" is growing worse.

Looking back, I realize that I have always liked hardware. Many years ago when I was really into stereo equipment (the name itself dates this), I spent a lot more on the equipment than on the music. And I've spent a lot more on computer hardware than software. So perhaps not surprising that my experience with firearms is similar.

What's your experience (lifetime to date)?

What's your experience (lifetime to date)?I bought 12 guns in the last 12 months but still spent much more on ammo.

On computer hardware and "stereo equipment", I did as you did.

"So many guns, so little time."

I have definitely spent much more on guns than ammo. Like you, I like the hardware. If I was rich, I would probably have a display case to show off my treasures and, of course, a large safe for other safe queens.

I'm not like Barth, though. I think he buys as many barrels as he does bullets! :behindsofa::tongue:

Good question.

I probably have spent more on firearms as I have rebuilt my collection. When I was young and got married, I sold off all my long guns for financial reasons (plus I lived in a not-so-safe neighborhood and didn't want them stolen). I had one pistol a Ruger P89, and an old Winchester 1930 Model 12 that I kept at my folks house.

Now, I have various caliber long guns and handguns, and keep a decent stock of ammo for all, but lots more for my primary two EDC SD guns and two SHTF weapons. So the ammo is currently a work in progress.

I spend more on ammo by a significant amount.
I shoot 2000+ rounds a month.

Good question. I would have to say guns BUT most of my SD shooting/practice/training is done with an Airsoft Glock 26 AND my brother supplies me with a lot of reloads for the 4 different pistol calibers I shoot.

One example: Beretta Nano, $458 (includes shipping and FFL costs)

500 rounds (400 FMJ, 100 JHP) about $190-200 in the FIRST month. By the 3 month mark, I should exceed the guns cost. By the end of year one, probably 2 to 3x on ammo. Pro-rata Range costs for the year are forecasted at $300 (30 hours). Every gun will have ammo costs in excess of the purchase price before I own it 10 months. Some quite a bit more as in the Nano's case. Most of my guns are possible self defense / carry guns.

I would guess ammo & fees. I used to shoot competition trap & sporting clays. Some years I shot over 20,000 rounds of shotgun shells. I reload everything, but that is a lot. Fees add up quickly too.

I would say guns, but the ammo is not too far behind. Lately, it has been furious, between the new guns and the ammo. When will the madness cease!!

I can't wait to see what Jocko has to say. His ammo cost for the PM9 alone is a few thousand dollars, and with all of his guns his ammo cost has to be in 5 digits.

This is a Hot Topic for me.
I've spent WAY too much money on guns, ammo and range time last year.
Started to add it up a couple of times and just get sick and can't finish.

Four guns, two cases of ammo, four barrels, lost count of the mags and holsters...

Have to set my sights on a Tacoma for the summer - that's the ticket

Oh back to the question.
Guns for sure, but ammo is a close second.

they kinda go hand inb hand. I can say for what I paid for my pm9 THAT MY OVER 32k ROUNDS IS ABOUT 12 TIMES AT LEAST OF WHAT I paid for jy PM9.

This is a hard question as I know I've spent a lot of money on ammo and range time in the last 40+ years. However, I've taken to reloading with a vengeance in the last 2 years so some of the costs have come way down. However, I've bought 5 new guns in the last two years mainly because I've started the reloading. I personally think it's a wash at this stage as long as I don't buy any more guns for the rest of my life!:lie:

Ammo by a wide margin. I love to shoot.

I honestly have no idea. I know I have a boat load of cash tied up in the hardware, but since I quit reloading, I couldn't tell you, I spend a ton on ammo too. Ask my wife, she might know. I'll say this it is rare for me to sell or trade a gun off, so I run lots of ammo through them.

I'm thinking guns but it's probably close.

Ammo wins by a long shot.

Good news...my brother-in-law just went to work for ATK and is checking out employee discount prices on Federal HST and Gold Dot ammo which may help me out a bit.

I have firearms I haven't shot... Haven't shot enough out of any one firearm to even out the expense on that one firearm.

For me, its fairly even. I dont have a large firearm collection (7-8) and when I do acquire a new firearm, its usually by trading or selling one of the existing firearms. As for the ammo side of the equation, I keep shooting, replacing and stockpiling ammo on a continuous basis.

I'd say guns. Don't get to the range nearly as often as I should.

This is my situation, and getting worse now that our winter snow has finally arrived in quantity, and also because I have a new baby on order to add to the one that is still waiting to be fired for the first time.

This gun mania reminds me of how years ago I was addicted to coin collecting for a while, but thankfully was cured. Coins (at least the right ones) have intrinsic value and are nice to behold - just like some guns - but at least guns can also be used - unlike coins.

Generally when I tell people I have firearms I haven't shot they look at me funny. But heck, I traded off a revolver I never even had intention to shoot. I didn't buy it and I sure do like the Kahr K9 I traded it off for!

One of these days I'll carry this 870 and the Mosin Nagants I haven't shot yet but it won't prevent me from buying something else before then.

Sadly, i have spent more on guns then ammo. I used to have the nasty habit of buyin another gun before i had the chance to shoot the last one. Made a point to shoot more often lately tho...
