A while back people were talking about the 642, and for those looking for one I found a pretty good deal.

Jet guns has the offer at http://www.slickguns.com/product/sw-m642-centennial-airweight-38-special-2-stainless-336-free-shipping
I've bought from them before and they are good folks.

My only issue is the lock thingy. If that's a no lock gun? GREAT.
Otherwise, I'll gladly spend $30/$40 more for the we don't need no stinking locks model.

The abominable-infernal-communist-damnation device called a Safety Lock has never interfered with my 642. I've been shooting it for about five years and have never had any problems.
I've also gone out into the rain without my boots, ripped the tag off my new mattress, and ran with scissors.:p

I plugged mine with the plug sold by John over on the S&W forum. If I was buying one new now, I'd definitley go no-lock. My 629 .44 mag has the lock, but it is not a SD gun. Could be :59: but I got it (used at a killer price) for range and hunting primarily.

^^ Do the wood grips dampen the recoil at all? I have rubber CT grips on mine, but seems like I've heard the wood has a dampening effect.

Good price at $340.00 - I think I paid four or four fifty for my 442. Seems like prices are dropping, but maybe I just overpaid.

I must have at least six different revolver grips in various shapes and composition.
For recoil I really like Pachmayr Compac grips

Those wood grips are long gone off of my 642. They were great for the range but bad for pocket concealment. They did distribute the recoil more evenly and coverd the backstrap as they were round-butt-to-square-butt conversion grips. I had put the stock rubbers back on as they are great, but I just like wood on a revolver. The ones on it now are Hogue bantams in pao ferro. They conceal and draw VERY easily from a pocket in a nemesis, but this slickness makes it not as "grippy" in hand as the rubber stock ones, so it's sort of a tradeoff either way. Recoil is about the same as the stock rubbers.

Today I ordered a 642 without lock. Price was $341 plus $4 for insured shipping (uninsured is free). They said they had about 50 units in their warehouse.

I assume you'll have to pay tax and small transfer fee to you FFL, correct?

Shouldn't be any tax unless the dealer was in his state.

No Texas sales tax since Jet Guns is in Kentucky. And my FFL charges $10 for the transfer.
