Had a good range trip this weekend.
Cleaning my CW9 and noticed that the guide rail on the inside of the frame had broken off about 1/2 way down. :(

Sent an email to Kahr requesting RMA.

My warranty expires in 5 months... I may have lucked out. :faint2:

With damage like this, the entire frame would need replacing.

Anyone ever go through a similiar process?

Will they just swap the SN plate or have to reissue a whole new SN and frame?

Is this a design flaw?

Is this a design flaw?

No, its a broken rail....they are not noted for snapping like that

Interesting. Have you shot much +P?

I'll be watching this thread with my fingers crossed.
I hate hearing about guns I own that are having these types of problems.

I don't shoot any +p out of this.

Just 115-147 FMJ and 147 JHP WWB usually.

Talked to customer support. Ian Burr.
He gave me a RMA number to send it back.
They will repair or replace as needed.
Said they would ship me back a fully functional weapon.

What ever that means....

When I asked if they would cover the shipping, got a flat no.

Also because it's frame damage under warranty, they'll have to ship it back to my FFL to register it.
That's an additional charge for the FFL transfer fee at the dealer end....

So by the time I get it back, hopefully in working order as it was before it left, the bill will be right around $100....

That has left a very sour taste in my mouth.

I was planning on picking up a Kahr K9.
I really don't think so now. Waiting to see what I get back... I'll keep ya posted.

P.S. Ian said he's only seen this type of damage once before. Someone had overloaded a round and it damaged the entire frame.

Sorry and sad to see that happen to your gun. With all the rounds you have put through it tells me that you like it. I can't see how they won't pay for shipping being under warranty (must be the fine print somewhere in the warranty) You mentioned the k9 as a possible purchase and I understand your hesitation because of your current problem but if you like it there aren't really a lot of posts with the k9 having problems. It might not help but if it were me I would mention that to the cs rep. They are in business to sell guns and sometimes bad pr can have a ripple effect

Good or bad, that's the purpose of gun forums. Having all this knowledge and experience helps the custumer AND manufacturer.

not settle for the No answer. That gun is under warranty, this is not a piddly issue, this is a major breakage of a kahr part. I would again call and if need be go higher up. this definitely shold be covered under warranty postage both ways. This is so so so rare to happen, just a brittle rail but I think the serialnumber is stamped intot he one peace front rail so a new lower willhav eto come from kahr and u willhave a new serial #.

I would again call and talk to Jay one more time, as IMO this is not right.. IAN or no one for that matter can say what really happened hgere, let alone blame it on a hot round. that to me is a pure cop out. They are rated for +P even and what happened there is not something that is caused by hot or over hot rounds. or we would have seen many like this as we all lknow somehere shoot +P+ ammo even and many shoot (myself ) +P ammo. Ian has not been with kahr longer than mayhbe a year, so how many could he have been familiar with even. I ain't buying it, but it is ur gun, .

I sure wouldnot pass on thge K9, it is kahrs bread and buttyer gun, bee around a long time andone of the finest you will get. I have a used K9 that is problaby 6+ years old and over 5K rounds just from me, never an issue. I sure wouldnot let this one thing make u skeptical of buying another kahr. That to me is not giving kahr a chance to fix ur problem eithe.r That is what warranties are for, guns like cars and everything else sometimes do break, BIG FOKKIN DEAL. GET IT FIXED . Donj't punish the K9 for what happened to this model. Makes no sense to me but again its ur money.

My wife is so much better at dealing with vendors.
I tried and all he responded with is an offer to put an extra mag in with it.
Uh sure....

I am seriously re-evaluating my opinion of the company.

Waiting to see what is delivered back to me and if it's in working order upon arrival.

The warranty needs to be extended again another 5 years or I'll really be ...
upset.

I'm gonna agree with jocko on this one for sure. This is a warranty issue and you should not be out anything. Call again and get some satisfaction.

Maybe your LGS can send it back to Kahr?

I have already sent it, but It think the suggestions to call back are correct.
I will try that and see if I can get a different CS agent. See if I can be reimbursed for shipping and the FFL transfer fee.

I'm not bashing Kahr, I will give them a chance, but I'm just so sad/upset about it.. Wifey says to wait as well and see what happens....

Can't vent about it anywhere but here. Won't discuss it on other boards cause I ain't tryin to be negative. :hurt:

ur demanding sh-t that ain't gonna happen. They are not going to extend the warranty another 5 years. If they send an extra mag, basically it is a wash, evidently u have already sent it back. Do u think chrysler with their 100K bumper to bumper is going tofix sometihing under warranty and then from that day on give u another 100K warranty?? U only wish!!! Be fair here, not unrealistic. If ur unhappy with what went down here, then when you get the gun back with a new complete lpower on it, just peddle it and buy something that u feel good about. U make it look like ur the only person who has ever had any gun issues. It happens, kahr is going to take care of it under warranty. . Actually kahr states no where that they pay postage both ways, normally they do and why this was not the case , well I was not on the phone with them or I would have taken it to the next level, but they are not obligated to pay to return it. actualy a poster here had the best solution and it would have saved u alot of money had ur selling dealer just sent it back for you.

I was saying that sarcastically.

What the CS rep said was he wasn't sure if the slide/barrel would be the same one sent in due to matching the slide to the new frame.

If it's a new gun from scratch, I would expect a full warranty, if just the frame is replaced, no.

I'm trying to do this lightly and in good humor.
It is a learning experience because I've never had a frame fail me before.
On any gun. Ever. That's 50+ years of shooting around the world.

So. If I can make light of it and whine about it and have some fun doing it, I'm going to stress less about it.

After this experience I would recommend that you inspect your CW9s rails from time to time to see if any cracks develop. I never noticed it, but didn't exactly look too closely at where the metal guide rails meld into the composite frame. Knew the metal went all around the dust cover.
I always thought that would be a weak point in the design and wondered about it before.
I saw the guide rail notch right after buying it and freaked thinking I had broke it, but it's there for a reason.
It' a learning experience.
I'll know what to look for in the future.
and it did NOT seem to affect the performance of the weapon at the range.
That's why I was so surprised when I found it.

Gots to go back to work....
