Several years ago, one of my neighbors came over to my shop to see me about an issue totally unrelated to guns. When he came into the shop, I had a rifle apart on the bench and was giving it a good cleaning. He acted really nervous being around even the parts of the rifle, and I asked him what was wrong. He said he had never been around guns, didnt like them , thought they should be outlawed and would never have one in his house. Being that he was my neighbor and I had to live near him, I bit hard on my lip and let it go with a comment of "well, different strokes".
Several years have passed and guess what?
The same guy came to see me a couple days ago and told me that he and his wife had decided to get a gun and get a concealed carry permit. He wanted to know what type of weapon he needed.
After regaining my senses I told him that until he got some experience, he probably didn't need a semi auto pistol, but someting like a small Smith or Taurus .38 snub revolver would be simple and reliable. I showed him one of mine, taught him how to load and unload it and offered to go with him to the range and let him shoot some. I also told him that owning a gun was a huge reponsibility and not to do it unless he was willing to make the committment to get proper training and practice.
PS They have both re-registered as Republicans and are attending church..
Maybe we have a convert... we'll see where this goes :)

thats great. i introduced a friend to guns & shooting a few years ago and he was more open minded to it but his wife not so much. last weekend he bought a 40gun safe! he got bit by the bug and now he & his wife have LTC and he carries on a regular basis. its amazing what a little education and first hand experience will do. as much as i hate these "reality gun tv shows" i think they are making people more open minded to guns. now if the shows would just stop making everything they shoot explode...

On that note... One of my friends owns a gun shop.. he is particularly critical of "Sons of Guns" and says that no one would want to watch a show about his shop... not enough drama.

A lot of these shows would be sooooo much better if Hollywood would leave out the drama. Some shows thats all they have to offer like Survivor and now days Biggest Loser. I love those shows but the added drama is making me not feel so bad when I miss them.

These gun smith shows and Top Shot for example would be entertaining and informative if they didn't have all the back stabbing and power whining.

Kind of like the news, if it bleeds it leads. Drama sells to some. Just not me.

Back to the neighbor....I wonder if they gradually changed their opinions...or if they just woke up one morning and realized they had been full of %#!&.
There is hope for everyone I guess.
Now if we could just get one family per gun owner to see the light.
