View Full Version : What's your gun belt.

I'm looking for a good gun/utility belt. I have always used a good thick leather belt. But they have been getting bet up with holsters and key rings I where for work. And they seam to ether be to tight or losses do to where the hole are punch and what I'm whereing that day. So I'm thinking a
1.5 in noylon belt. Any ideas I like what I see at Blackhawks but they are 1.75 this is to big for my work items.

I had a Wilderness Tactical? belt that was real good. Most of the good nylon belts have a size limit far as minimum and maximum but they are perfect for what you describe. I out grew mine, actually I think it shrunk.

I think Brownells is carrying some nylon stuff now also that might be a good option. I can't remember whose stuff it is.

I just confirmed with one of the guys, Wilderness and Blackhawk now offer the 1 1/2" version. The Blackhawk has an extra D ring on the front that I would cut off since it interferes with my belt loops and my helicopter repelling days I think are pretty well over.

There are a variety of nylon inner duty belts with velcro attachment so you can adjust it just so. Just do a google search.

Here is a very inexpensive one: http://www.loopbelt.com/default.asp

Here is a Blackhawk one for a couple of dollars more that can be worn reversed for a dressier look: http://www.copquest.com/26-3880.htm

Here's an Uncle Mike's: http://www.opticsplanet.net/uncle-mikes-nylon-web-deluxe-inner-duty-belt.html

BTW, my favorite belt is this Amish made one with roller buckle. I am going to drill holes in between the holes for finer adjustments.

They have them in brown and in smooth style at the same price. Good sturdy belts and I really like the roller buckle.

The duty belts really aren't considered a gun belt. They are just worn like a normal belt (usually no buckle, just velcro) and used to attach the loops from your duty belt to keep it in place so you don't end up looking like John Wayne with your Colt hanging down on one side even though that system worked very well for him.

A good nylon belt will be just as rigid as a proper leather belt. Wilderness even has triple stitched which makes them very stiff, just what you want for a gun belt.

I have two wilderness tactical instructor belts (5 stitch) in black and tan that have worked for me. Very stiff and supportive. Not very attractive, but I always have my shirt untucked. I'm thinking of getting a leather looper for when it needs to look better.

I use a riggers belt. Nylon yes, infinitely adjustable, mighty comfy, and light. I got mine from Sportsman's Guide, but they can be had easily elsewhere. I do stay away from the two roller buckles as opposed to the one with the angled slider (looks like a piece of angle iron was fit into the buckle, instead of having two rollers that move also). Plenty stiff and sturdy.

Actually, Bawanna, it's a conspiracy among the clothing manufacturers. I'm no bigger now than I was at eighteen, but my pant size is now a 42 instead of 30. I think that it has something to do with the inflation we've all been hearing about. I blame it on Obama.

I use this guy for my belts. They run under $65 delivered. Very high quality and very sturdy. Currently Rick is making me a black one with a sharkskin stamping for dress wear. I will post pics when it arrives next week. I get my belts punched with 7 holes spaced 3/4" apart and that gives me a lot of room for adjustment. As for your key rings, I would look for other options as for attaching to your belt.

For nylon woven check 5.11 belts. They make a very thick reversible model that will work also for under $25 delivered. I like this type of belt to be fit a little longer so the belt actually wraps around far enough to go into the pant loop at 9:00 on my left side. That prevents it from flopping around and it looks neater.

As I was posting the above comment the black belt I ordered was being delivered. My "basket of snakes" has increased by one. The Black one is
1-1/4" and looks narrower than that so it fits the "dress" requirement perfectly. All my holsters work perfectly on the narrower belt. Rick is a great guy to do business with. Life is good.

How much additional for the texturing?

I found an 1 1/4 wide Dickies Work Belt at Wally World and have been using that. It's not the greatest, I'd like to have a 1 1/2 inch gun belt, but what I'm really looking for is a western type gun belt/holster combo with a 2" or greater belt, that will work with a 6 inch barrel double action .357 to wear over my overalls when I'm outside working, so I can tote my .357 Dan Wesson around comfortablly. We get some crazy, starving, dog dump offs out here, and it pays to be ready. I had a couple of rottweilers start to attack me once, luckily I was wearing a pistol and a shot in the ground sent them running. I've had everthing from St. Bernards on down show up around here. Starving dogs get pretty brave.

For jeans wilderness tactical instructor belts (5 stitch) . When dressing up a 5.11 casual leather belt.

All this belt talk had me at Wilderness's website to get me a new one since the last one shrunk or I swelled, not sure which.
I noticed they make no mention of the 3 stitch or the 5 stitch. They have the original instructor belt which is what I had before but no mention of the stitch.
They used to have a version that had a liner inside for added rigidity but I don't see that anymore either.

I'll look again tonight when I have more time to scrutinize.

He only charged me $10 extra for the stamping. I wanted a belt that I could wear with wool dress slacks and the way he stamped it it looks narrower than it is. Stamping, the minus 1/4", and single row of stitching, I had to give up a small bit of rigidity but this will do everything I ask of it. All of my dress carry is with a 340PD snubbie or the PM9 so my pants will stay put fine.

I have the Black Original Wilderness Instructor belt I bought from my LGS for $60.00 + tax and I know you can get it cheaper online here.

http://www.gmstactical.com/wiorinbe.html

The advantage of getting it locally is, you can try it out first then decide, I tried all the belts they have and this was the one, high quality thick made in the USA and should last a lifetime.

I recommend either Concealment Solutions or a Crossbreed belt. They are both designed specifically for gun and holster use and are extremely rigid. I have a CrossBreed belt and holster but am curious as to how much more rigid the Concealment Solutions one is due to the kydex lining.

Word to the wise.
Don't buy the LIGER gunbelt. It looks like a solid belt for holding up your sidearm.... it does not. The buckle looks very stylish, but it cannot take the weight of a pistol.... it sags.
To make it worse, the buckle does not stay closed. It is just a small hook that links to the belt.... but it comes undone if you happen to move (Gee, I usually like to move when performing tasks during the day.)
I returned mine after two days and thankfully got my $60 back.

They are nice! 1 1/2" wide and 3/16" thick single layer of leather. Real nice and useful roller buckle that makes the stiff belt easy to buckle and unbuckle.

I shopped around and got an expensive two layer gun belt because I thought I had to have one. About 1/4" thick with a rounded buckle. Is it stiffer? A little bit, just enough to be kind of uncomfortable against my hip bones. And the non roller buckle makes it difficult to buckle and extremely difficult to unbuckle—I have to use both hands. It doesn't support my gun and holster any better. It is a good looking belt with an attractive buckle and matching keeper, so I will use it as a dress belt. But I have two of the Amish belts and I love them. Best belts I have ever had. And fine gun belts.

P.S. you can get $4 off if you buy two belts. Free shipping.

Reading all these posts is interesting. Body shape does make a difference. Everybody has a story of favorite belt or belt maker. The only thing I see in common with all of them is the need for it to be a substantial well made product. I used to try to hang a $125 Milt Sparks from a 1"dress belt. BAD IDEA. Leather or web style, spend more and get a product that works well. You will be happier in the long run.

Before spending $80-100 on a two layer belt designed to support a 2 1/2 pound 1911 or the like, try the Amish belt at $28, which is fine especially with these light weight Kahr pistols. Believe me and you'll save a lot of money. If you don't believe me, it's no skin off my back. Whatever belt you get, make sure to get a roller buckle because buckling and unbuckling can be a real bear without it.

$50 is my limit on belts and I found what I needed in the Looper Kydex-reinforced belt... also sold as Bladetech. I got mine for $50 plus shipping from Kahr.

The makers site:

http://www.looperlawenforcement.com/looper-reinforced-holster-belt.html

I've seen them at local gun shows for $50, too. You may find them cheaper elsewhere.

http://www.blade-tech.com/Blade-Tech-Looper-Belt-Series-1.5-wide-pr-1250.html#product_images

I chose the brown one because I like solid brass buckles... simple ones... and I don't like shiny ones. I've scratched mine a bit with clips on and off, but it feels great and holds everything up... pistol/IWB Minituck, magazine holder, and phone case... without sagging or being deformed... or cracking, falling apart like my Wally World collection of sturdy-LOOKING belts for $12 to $20.

I wanted to post some pictures but can't find them. I did post some here on the forum... somewhere.

The 5.11 Trainer belt is similar to the Wilderness Instructor belt, but quite a bit cheaper. I got 5.11 belts included with some 5.11 covert tactical pants. Before you hurt yourself laughing at my tacticool pants you should see them (below). My wife altered them as I don't need an extra 2" gusset in the crotch for rolling in the mud with a bad guy and they fit great while the extra pockets are almost invisible.

Anyway back to 5.11 belts. They are 2 pieces of leather with a thin kydex center. They work okay for a small gun but twist with a 2.5 lb 1911 and I cannot recommend them for such.

If you know me you understand I come from an old line of "make do" men, for whom duct tape is the great invention of the last 2 centuries. Since I ended up with 5 belts, I took 2 of them apart and combined 3 pieces of leather with 2 kydex inserts. I had it sewn by a local saddle maker in a curved fashion because you can't bend this puppy much.

Now it barely fits the loops (stretch each one) and I had to reshape the kydex belt clips for the suspenders and holster. It's like holding up a hula-hoop with suspenders and I can hang about anything on it. It did solve 1 problem but created another. It wears like a steel band (which was what I was after) and quite uncomfortable. Now that I lost weight it may be better but I think it looks good hanging in my closet for now.

You have lost weight. You been working out?

Yes to lost weight and no to working out. I'd rather starve myself than work out. Last time I worked out was in 1984 when I worked my tail off just to get some tone back. Problem is it wouldn't stick and I went on assignment for 3 months where I couldn't and was worse off than ever. So I said scrap it, I would have to work out the rest of my life in order to live an additional year or two and it ain't worth it.

So now it's sticky rice with fish/chicken and vegs but little sugars. Lost 25lbs and been holding it for a while. You can tell I'm proud of that.

So I said scrap it, I would have to work out the rest of my life in order to live an additional year or two and it ain't worth it.

So now it's sticky rice with fish/chicken and vegs but little sugars. Lost 25lbs and been holding it for a while. You can tell I'm proud of that.

Nice job, OldBuddy! :) Rice and fish or chicken, huh? I have been intending to add more rice and fish to my diet. Already eat a lot of chicken and have cut down on sugars. I'm stuck at a still too high weight, so I'm going to have to make more drastic changes to my diet. Rice really drives the hunger demons away, doesn't it?

>>Rice really drives the hunger demons away, doesn't it?<<

Definitely! It was the big factor in my success especially early on. As my apatite dropped it became easier but that first month was rough. Recently we discovered Jasmin Rice, often called sticky rice, to add to our mix of white and brown. We cook a double batch and put it in the small margarine containers which make a good portion and easy to pop in the micro. Helps the discipline when looking around.

Milt Sparks. At least 10 years of daily wear, most of the time with a G22, phone, cuffs and spare mag attached. It's ugly now but still carrying stuff and holding my pants up with gusto. I definitely got my money's worth.

I just received a Wilderness Tactical 1.5 inch Original Instructor Belt in OD with the CSM stiffener. It is one solid belt and is comforable as well. I was worried that it would be so stiff that it was not comfortable but that is not the case. This is a nice casual belt with chinos or shorts. I will definitely buy another.

I also have a very nice 1.5 inch tapered Bullhide cordovan belt from the Beltman.net. This is a dressier business casual belt that I can wear with slacks and a sportscoat owing to the taper and brass buckle. Very sturdy as well. I may soon buy another in black.

My least favorite is a 1.5 inch Double Filson belt. More rustic/casual looking for trousers but looks odd with shorts. Sturdy but bordering on too big and chunky. I guess what did I expect - it is consistent with the rest of my Fison gear, low tech and solidly built but not terribly stylish. I won't be buying another.

Hope that you find something that you like and enjoy wearing.

A Better Belt USA. I ordered one and received it, excellent quality but I wasn't paying attention when I chose the size and it was an inch too long, they except the return (my cost on shipping) and have excellent customer service. Great looking belts too. I ordered two more from them, I'll post up about them when they come. I had a 5.11 leather (no stich) that I didn't care for, just trying it on made it look like it was wearing out. I also picked up a 5.11 double duty which was fine, but the buckle sucked so I'm getting a trainer (I know I know wilderness.....) because I liked the color option :)

Oh and A Better Belt USA has free shipping if you are willing to rave about their product, and you will definitely want to rave about it.

Haha, yes - I misspoke. But seriously I don't know how anyone could be not happy with the quality of these belts. I've been wearing mine daily only switching frOm black to brown to give each a turn. I really did not mean to insinuate bribery, sorry!

Bringin this thread back..... Im lookin to order one of the amish belts, but ive never ordered a belt online before. (dont wanna have to ship it back cause of size issues) It says to order 2 sizes up from your pant size if you plan to use it for iwb carry. If I wear a 34 in pants, do I really need a 36 belt to tuck my cm9 inside my waist?

I find that, at most, I loosen my Amish belt one notch, sometimes not at all when carrying my CM9 in a PJ Holster. The two Amish belts that I have bought are 42, the same belt size I usually buy.

I have several gun belts.
My Galco SB1, although pricey, is far and away my favorite.
I have a dress DeSantis that I wear daily to work with dress slacks.
It's too thin to support a full size gun well.
But works perfect for pocket carry of my
really too heavy for pocket carry guns.
Kahr MK40 Elite and S&W 640-1 357.

The all stainless centennial 357 is actually the gun I carry the most.
Monday through Friday, in my dress pants pocket, in a DeSantis Nemesis holster.
Even walking to the gym five days a week at 4:45 AM.
And in my gym bag while I pump iron and do cardio.
And seven nights a week with it's Big Dot glowing beside me in bed.

The S&W SS J-Frame is really my constant companion.

I am the same way about my ported, Glossy Black Duracoated S&W 638 Airweight with 4.25 lb DA trigger. That gun is my constant companion, carries so well and is such a no brainer w.t.s.h.t.f.: 5 that go bang every time.

My leather belt is A Better Belt USA. I love it. My nylon belt is a 511 Tactical which is a 1.5 but I would recommend going with the wilderness and one that is either multi stitched or reinforced because nylon itself just doesn't do the job.

*edit - I might have posted in here already, didn't notice it was this old of a thread, my opinion still stands.

I literally destroyed several quality dress belts before switching to real gun belts.
Now all the belts I wear are various styles of gun belts.
Even to work where I can't carry.
Makes slipping in my S&W 640 after work cake.

I have a brand new Don Hume holster belt in reddish brown. They were out of black and plain brown when I bought it. I don't like the color. If anyone is interested PM me. Size 34

That said, I want one just like it in black. They are well built and can definitley support a large pistol IWB or OWB.

Hmm. The two Amish belts I got from Hank's are the proper size. They are not as stiff as the expensive two layer gun belts, but of course they are stiffer than a plain old thin belt. The stiffness, the 1 1/2" width and the thickness are necessary for carrying a gun. But I like them fo everyday wear, too.

Why don't you contact them and tell them there is a problem with the length of the belt.
Because I ordered by my waist size 36" they sent me a belt that fits 36" w/one spare hole I know the proper fit should be your size in the middle whole. The belt technical fits, I wore it and it's now used. I can't return it in good conscience....Besides incentive to get back to my 34" date I used to have!

I bought one of these belts, black with the eagle print, about 1 1/2 years ago. Then, I bought another plain black one a few months later. The eagle print one still looks like new, but the plain one had a defective finish and all of the black has disappeared from the the edges, which now look like rough raw leather. I contacted Hank's Clothing yesterday about it and they are going to send me a new belt! :cheer2:

So, I want you all to know how Hank's Clothing stands behind these belts and give them a try!
