Yeah has to be since they were meeting in parking lots to do the deal. Still, do many here on this forum purchase guns like that? I would if it is legal to do so in my state. Did you know I can go anywhere in America and buy a kitchen knife? Or a baseball bat? Insane video report IMHO. Over the top. Hold the person accountable and not the weapon?

I've had parking lot transactions between members on local forums, we each ask to see the others permit and driver's license, some require you to sign a piece of paper, others don't (not required in Minnesota).

I just had a parking lot meet last weekend with scoundrel, ya think he's got plans to take down a plane with a keister stashed NAA? I'd feel really bad about that.

It's funny how these media types can take completely illegal transactions and make it sound like a huge pandemic. If a crime was committed they should have notified the police and have the seller arrested.

I got my cm9 and $200 from a trade for my shotgun in a parking lot deal a couple weeks ago. Here in sc no permit or exchange of info is required at all. It's all up to the two parties in the sale. I've sold a few a required signature on a transaction receipt and I've sold them with nothing but money and gun exchanged.

Friends and relatives have done these kinds of exchanges in SC, but we always go with a legit paper, with driver license number, name address, all that good stuff. You can actually print out a gun bill of sale from online. That way, if the idiot decides to use it illegally, or if you find out the one you bought was used or stolen, you have a paper trail to get back to the seller/buyer

Was this another ATF Fast & Furious sting? Good thing the reporter wasn't killed.

The article is awesome.

I have bought a few firearms from localish guys online. Even had one shipped across state line to my house LEGALLY.

The article however is also misleading. For one it claims the NRA is against background checks for personal sales which isn't exactly true. The NRA has supported allowing anyone to access the background check system so they can use it for personal sales.

It's called the private sales loophole. Been legal since the country was founded. The reporter is a bit slow on the uptake. Nothing to see here. Move along.

We can't do this in Michigan without the same paperwork and criteria as a dealer uses. The difference is still that a private seller can't do a background check.

Bad guys can come up with lies and phoney ID to support those lies.

I'm told that there are many States where gunshow sales also get around a background check.

Not from an FFL they don't. THOSE are FEDERAL LAWS and apply no matter which state one resides in. Now one can call a person who brings in several firearms to a gun show and attempts to sell them a dealer.. if he aint got the liscence and ATF thinks he is trying to be a dealer he gon get some serious trouble.

Yep! The guys selling guns at Tucson gun shows all do the same paperwork a brick and mortar dealer does. I've seen some customers argue and get turned away, probably thinking they might get away with something at a gun show. No such luck here. :)Private sellers (those who are not dealers with an FFL) can sell at shows, can't they? Can't they rent a booth in many cases.

Private sales in Alaska have no requirement to do any verification. I've sold several guns, all meeting in parking lots, mainly because I don't want the buyer to know where I live, in case he has bad intentions.

I require every seller (and inform of it ahead of time) to complete a bill of sale, and provide an Alaska Driver's License. I do so to protect myself, since the last info the government has about that weapon serial # is mine.

As for the buyer potentially being a bad guy, the gun he's buying isn't loaded. If I get the impression that a potential buyer is flaky, I have no qualms about cancelling the deal and leaving. Definitely a over-dramatized story.

I keep looking for a private sale at a gun show because I would like to have something off the books, but I can't find anything that I want with a decent price or condition. I go to every show looking, though... cash in hand.

If the dealers have something I want at a decent price, I'm ready to do that, too. I was close to buying a new XDM-40 4.5" Black at the last show, but the dealer I was looking for with the price I remembered wasn't there... wrong show. Next show, next month... maybe. We have two different shows and locations. The next one will be the right one, if I have decided to go ahead and get the XDM40... 16+1. Then I just have to get the Trijicon HD NS Yellow put on it. I don't know that I really NEED it, though.

I have bought guns from private sellers @ gun shows, no paperwork required. I do ask for a receipt tho, just in case there is a problem,i.e. turns out stolen etc.

Yessiree! I do get receipts! Though I don't remember if I got one for the S&W 645 that I bought from a retired Border Patrol agent back in San Antonio in 1994.

I sold many dozens of guns in Texas and I only had one tiny problem... Interpol called me at the squadron about a Ruger Mark whatever with a bull barrel .22LR that I had sold at a gun show. Some guy had tried to carry it through Heathrow Airport in England. I just told him when and where I sold it... 'nuff said... no problems. This was around 1980... give or take a few years.

I did sell as an unlicensed "dealer" at a few shows in Abilene, Ft. Worth, and Dallas, but I was just walking around at one in Abilene when I sold that Ruger. I was on the yellow sheets for all of those guns and I made sure that I kept records... when and where, etc.
