Notch on the mag follower

What is the reason for that notch on the follower? Does that prevent me from pressing down the slide release when the magazine is empty?

The manual explains this. Have you read it? That is what makes the slide lock open when the mag is empty. And, yes, as the manual explains, the added pressure of the mag spring makes it very difficult to release the slide until the empty mag is removed.
