Who's on Unemployment (with apologies to Bud Abbott & Lou Costello)

COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America .

ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible Times. It's 8.3%.

COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: You just said 8.3%.

ABBOTT: 8.3% unemployed.

COSTELLO: Right, 8.3% out of work.

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: Okay, so it's 16% unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, that's 8.3%.

COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 8.3% or 16%?

ABBOTT: 8.3% are unemployed. 16% are out of work.

COSTELLO: IF you are out of work you are unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, you can't count the "Out of Work" as the unemployed. You have to look for work to be unemployed.

COSTELLO: BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!

ABBOTT: No, you miss my point.

COSTELLO: What point?

ABBOTT: Someone who doesn't look for work, can't be counted with those who look for work. It wouldn't be fair.

COSTELLO: To who?

ABBOTT: The unemployed.

COSTELLO: But they are ALL out of work.

ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for work. Those who are out of work stopped looking. They gave up. And, if you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the unemployed.

COSTELLO: So if you're off the unemployment roles, that would count as less unemployment?

ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!

COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because you don't look for work?

ABBOTT: Absolutely it goes down. That's how you get to 8.3%. Otherwise it would be 16%. You don't want to read about 16% unemployment do ya?

COSTELLO: That would be frightening.

ABBOTT: Absolutely.

COSTELLO: Wait, I got a question for you. That means they're two ways to bring down the unemployment number?

ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.

COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets a job?

ABBOTT: Correct.

COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you stop looking for a job?

ABBOTT: Bingo!

COSTELLO: So there are two ways to bring unemployment down, and the easier of the two is to just stop looking for work.

ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like an economist.

COSTELLO: I don't even know what the hell I just said.

ABBOTT: Now you know why the unemployment figures are improving, and you should now understand the State of the Union!

I can't take credit for that work. I received it in an e-mail from my ultra right wing brother-in-law. I'm sending it to the few liberals that I know. Hopfully they will stop speaking to me. :)

My brother in law sent that to me yesterday and I about fell out of my chair laughing but then the realization of its absolute truthfulness hit me. Suddenly it wasn't so funny anymore.

If I had a degree in Community Organizing, it makes perfect sense. Heck, I still think we're reducing the deficit by NOT hunting baby seals in the rain forest.

And isn't it amazing how the cooperative liberal media repeat these lies, hoping that if they keep telling them people will get to believing them as facts.

It's up to people like us to spread the truth. That's how we'll beat Obama in November.

Also, when someone's unemployment period runs out, they are no longer counted. It is like the are retired. Skewed numbers making a worsening situ look like BO is making it work.

heh to go 99 weeks on government jwelfare and then ur not counted anymore and the next group steps up for 99 weeks. where is the incentative with 99 weeks of $300+. I know of one husband and wife who worked at the same place and were laid off over a year ago in Illinois and combined was bring home $800. WOULD U LOOK FOR A JOB???

This payroll tax holiday is the biggest farce I have ever seen, costing every working person today a grand in his SS when he gets older. Its broke now and now we just are helping it along. Now going on for 2 years the tax holiday is going to be damn hard to stop now for oth parties willnow call it a tax increase. Figures don't lie but liars sure do figure.. would nt have surprised me if the great one when he proposed this tax holikday tha tthe difference be made up the their employer...
