View Full Version : Chip in new CM9 guide rails and successful first few range trips!

I found a symmetrical piece of metal missing in one of the rails on my brand new CM9 when I was cleaning it today. Here is a pic:
http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd476/slowgoat/photo1.jpg
It looks machined. Is this normal?
Also, I have put a box of Federal target rounds through the weapon without a hiccup. I must admit the first mag didn't lock the slide back, but after that no problems. That to me doesn't count since it was the first mag!
Today I put 3 mags of Winchester Ranger T +P 124 gr hollowpoints through it with no problems.
I racked the slide a lot before firing, and stripped it and relubed it just as the sticky says.
This little gun is such a pleasure to shoot!!!!!!

Perfectly normal. It's a witness mark for reference in the molding process. They all have it.

Thanks Bawanna! I'll sleep good tonight.
I sure do like this little gun. I'm afraid I have the Kahr fever. I have my eye on some of the others with stainless frames and in .45 and .40.
Must . . . . be . . . . . strong!!!!!

Resistance is futile! One of each is a good start.

Come on Bawanna tell him the truth. They just put that little notch there to mess with our heads, and give us something to think and talk about. :hurt:

Does anyone go to Kahr.com and click on the Q&A section anymore???
Q. There is a chip in the metal guide rail of my polymer pistol. Is this normal?
A. This is a witness mark for the polymer frame manufacturer and is present by design.

You can't honestly expect people to read into these things or even look at their owner's manual! ****, I always use mine as a target as soon as I get it!

Like my dear old Granny used to say..."the people who don't read the manual have no advantage over the people who can't read it." No indictment...just sayin'.

You gotta admit, though, finding one sentence in a book of sentences is much harder than going to a forum specific to the product and asking the specific question outright. It is a much quicker resource.
Plus, with searching the forum, you need to know how the question was asked initially... in this case the guy would've needed to know the answer (witness mark) so he could search for that term.

Welcome to KahrTalk.
Worried me when I first saw it but nothing close to how I felt when I first noticed "The Bulge".

Thanks everyone!
I worked as a mechanic's assistant at a car dealership whose name rhymes with Cadillac, and one of the old guys used to always say, "when all else fails, read the directions." I guess it rubbed off on me!
"The Bulge," huh? Have to do a search on that one. Should be really interesting what pops up. ;)

I've requested they remove that from the manual. I've studied and memorized and now know the answer to this one frequently asked question. So I got it covered. I need a purpose in life and I think I found it right here with the chip in the rail. Call me specialized and I only got one answer but it works for me.

Hmmm, a test......rhymes with Cadillac. Must be a NC thing, I don't get it. I do know that Nothing can be lacking when your Cadillacing. Is that close?

The lubrication pic threw me off:

No notch (or is it covered up by the red arrow???).
Is the notch only in certain models then?
The joke is that those guys read the hell out of the directions, and when they screwed something up, they went back and relearned what they hadn't memorized. The "when all else fails" quote came with a super heavy dose of sarcasm!
Actually there were a few of those mechanics that didn't read the directions (not good!), and I'm acting like one of them with this one. I'm going to go over the manual a couple of times tonight, for sure.
Thanks again!

All the polymer models have the notch. I think your right in that picture, the arrow is covering it up. Only explanation I can see.

Except the P380... and my K9 NEEDED one... there was a slightly degraded area where the recoil assembly was trying to make its own notch... a very slow process. I helped it along and gave it a notch. I haven't noticed any "damage" to that area on my P380.
OOPS... the "Notch" is the one at the front of the slide where the front part of the recoil assembly needs freedom to move as the barrel and slide do their dance during recoil. The "missing" chip on the front left rail needs its own name. Maybe "the chip".

I think that we should have a contest to see who can come up with the most ridiculous answer to the notch question. The winner should receive a new Kahr of his choice from the manufacturer. I'm not greedy, I'll settle for a P380.
Ans.
1. The notch is put there to worry new owners. :)

I think it was an infestation of titanium teethed mice in the manufacturing plant that were some how attracted to the shiny metal of those rails. One bite each and they just moved on to the next.

There's an internal contest between Kahr and Glock to see which can get the most posts on their forum sites per 1000 guns sold. Those little "chips" out of the rail are there solely to drive up the post count on KahrTalk. (and boy is it ever working!)

Someone should take that picture of the rails and add the chip just under the lower red arrow, so people would see it in the example... might not stop them from asking about it, though. Just include an arrow pointing to that saying this is a "witness mark". They could add the "Notch" to the recoil assembly slot in the front of the slide, too. We need common, consistent terminology... the Notch, the Chip, the Bevel, etc.

Oh that's a pretty good one. I don't think we'll ever be in the running for post count with Glock (and I'm very happy for that). I never could figure out what they talk about on a Glock. It's perfection so they obviously have no issues EVER. Seems like it would be rather boring except for banning people that have a complaint.

The notch is reserved space for where the bio-chip will be positioned when the new gun laws come into effect. :)

It is defective if you don't have the notch. BWAHAHA :)

Slowgoat, you gotta know we're just apparently bored and poking fun at ourselves with you, not at you. Right?
MW, neither my PM45 or my K40 have those arrows numbers either. I'm gonna get to the bottom of this. They don't have any issues other than operator confusion but I'd hate to think they are missing some important stuff.

Maybe Kahr can etch or engrave the numbers when making the guns and then include the lube chart in the manual.
