Laugh or cry, this is Detroit:

February 27, 2012 2:19 PM WWII veteran says nobody helped him after he was carjacked, injured

(CBS/AP) DETROIT - A World War II veteran said nobody helped him in the minutes after he was attacked during a daytime carjacking at a busy Detroit gas station and he had to crawl across a concrete parking lot to get help.

A surveillance video shows Aaron Brantley, 86, struggling to get from the fuel pump to the gas station's door to get help as people walked and drove by him Wednesday morning. The video was first obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
Brantley said he was on the way home from Bible study when he stopped to put gas in his 2010 Chrysler 200, which he recently bought to replace another car that had been stolen. The carjacker knocked Brantley down, took his keys and drove off in his car about 10:40 a.m.
Brantley told The Associated Press said several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack.
"People were passing me just like I wasn't there...I was crawling and they just walk by me like I'm not there," he said.
Brantley said as he approached the building, he asked a woman to open the door for him. He said at first it appeared she wasn't going to but she did and then kept walking. He found it distressing that nobody helped him.
Station manager Haissam Jaber said he didn't see the attack but called 911 after a customer alerted him. As Brantley sat on rock salt, waiting for an ambulance to come, he offered money to a stranger to drive him to his house a few blocks away. The customer refused the money and drove Brantley home, where an ambulance took him to the hospital.
Jaber said he also gave police another surveillance video from just before the carjacking that shows Brantley coming in to pay the cashier. A man looked at Brantley and left without buying anything, then headed in the direction from which the carjacker approached Brantley and his car, Jaber said.

Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said Saturday there have been no arrests in the case. The Free Press reported that a man later found Brantley's phone number in his Bible on the stolen car's front seat and called him. The car had been abandoned hours later and a few miles away with its wheels and radio missing.
The gas station manager said violent crime isn't common at the location, which is next to the University of Detroit Mercy campus. He said there was a carjacking about four months ago, but it happened at 1 a.m. and nobody was harmed.

This crap is one reason I Concealed Carry. I don't live in the Detroit city limits but drive through occasionally. My GF's 87 y.o. mother lives in an area where I feel barely protected with two guns on me. One dedicated to four legged threats, one for the two legged type.

Mom has a disabled 40ish son living with her. He rarely ventures out at all, not even to family functions. He's determined to "watch the house". My father was the same way in his last year in Detroit. There were bars on every window from the late 1980s until I removed them in order to meet code so I could sell the house in 2000.

A hell of a way to live.

TriggerMan you have my sympathies. You're correct, that's no way to live. It's like self induced prison. When that type of existence becomes the norm... we are truly losing it.

It is Detroit where they have those $1000 houses for sale. Hell, nobody wants to live there. They couldn't pay me to live there!

in 2000. They bought it for $13,900 in 1963. Today it might be worth $10,000.

I do the taxes for my GF's Mom and her little place has a State Eq. Value of $274. That's right, Two Hundred Seventy Four Dollars. This means they believe it has market value of $548. She pays Property Tax oj $495 / year.

Too many streets with unoccupied homes. Too many vandalized homes, Burned out shells and dope dens.

Sad indeed.

I also live in a suburb od Detroit and worked downtown Detroit in an armored car for 3 decades. Downtown is ok and you don't feel threatened. Venture out any direction but south(Canada is directly south) and it is a whole different world.

That's exactly how Washington DC is. As long as you stay on the tourist trail you're fine... stray off of it just a little and you are in downtown Somalia.

That is disgusting, people not helping a beat up old man like that. They say Karma's a *****, and I wish she'd start biting some of these jerkwads in the ass.

TriggerMan, here's a comment from the second article:

Gangbangers shout up my brothers house in St. Louis, with his wife and grandkids. His was the wrong house!

Apparently, english is not studied in Detroit. Third grade education and firearms do not mix well. Rev Al Sharpton would be he much proud.

More people have been killed in Detroit this week than in all of war zoned Afghanistan. Where's the outrage?

I think the industrial revolution made Detroit great. I think Coleman Young started the downhill slide and Kwame Kilpatrick made the slope vertical.

You people are looking at this from the wrong perspective. If a mother can kill her baby (abortion) why is it wrong for a baby to kill its mother? Equal protection under the law. This is what happens when we devalue human life. Societies crumble when they lose their moral underpinnings.
