When if ever is the time to replace the guide rod? I have seen posts on here about a stainless steel one and figure it is cosmetic. I am still trying to figure everything out but it does not seem to me that guide rod would short like one of the springs etc. I ask because I will be taking a class in June which requires 1500 rounds and I will be ordering some recoil springs since I have 1500 rounds through my CW9 and want to make sure I don't have any unfixable issues.
Thanks for helping me out here

I've never had an issue with the factory guide rods, just like the look and feel of the stainless in a stainless gun.

The original guide rod will serve for the life of the gun. Stainless is you want, but only as a want, not a need.
