View Full Version : Anyone had a gunsmith adjust/work the trigger pull of either a P45 or a PM 9mm?

As the title asks, has anyone done it with success?

Why? It's already perfect!

Adjust as in shortening it or?
I haven't, although I did polish up the trigger internals in both of mine. The difference was barely noticeable.
The fit and finish of the parts of the trigger, trigger bar, cam and sear are already nearly perfect. You might see some little improvement of smoothness with the sear being polished.
The area that would introduce the most "grit" feeling is the striker tunnel. If thats rough inside, the striker will pass along the gritty feeling to the cam, trigger bar and trigger. Shooting will smooth that out to an extent, but the first 3/8 of an inch or so (from the rear) would be one place that shooting doesn't really effect all that much, and could benefit from smoothing - IF - it is rough. I doubt there are many rough striker tunnels out there.

Couldn't you just get a a 5 lb striker spring from Wolff Springs to lighten the trigger pull? I guess a gunsmith could reduce it more with different springs. I think Kahr specs at a 6 lb trigger pull. What are you trying to accomplish?

I guess I should have been more specific. Because of the size of my hand, I find the pull longer than I'd like it to be. I don't what a hair trigger, but I prefer something a little quicker.

With the stock trigger I can empty the gun of six rounds in less than two seconds. How fast do you want to be?

I guess we all got to do what we got to do, but one of the things that sold me on the Kahr PM9 pistol in the first place was the trigger. It's long but smooth approx. 5# trigger pull IMO is perfect for a pistol you plan on carrying. It also seems to get better with age. I can't think of another DAO triggered pistol in it's class that I've ever felt that has a better trigger.

It's a DAO trigger.
I don't think you can really reduce the pre-travel.
Sounds like you really want a SA pistol.
I would recommend you consider the new Sig Sauer P938 SA 9mm.
Or some other single action gun.
I understand the new Kimber Solo is a single action striker gun that might
work for you as well.
BTW I have a MK40 Elite and asked a gunsmith, in general, what he could do to improve the gun?
His response was "Kahr pretty much did everything you could do from the factory as far as trigger, polishing the feed ramp and so on.
There really isn't anything left to do".

I don't know if this would help you but...Kahr is bringing out an "enhanced trigger" on the models that have the external safety and LCI. It is said to shorten the length of pull to 1/4" from the standard 3/8" but keep the same weight ~7.5 lbs on both. See page 13 in the new Kahr brochoure.

I guess the reason it is bugging me is that my fingers are so long I can barely get my first pad on the trigger, so my joint/second pad is pulling the trigger by the time it fires which makes it seem even longer, if that makes sense?

Sounds more like you need some sort of grip sleeve fashioned to thicken
up the grip and extend the length needed to reach the trigger?
The new 4th gen Glocks, and some other guns, now have replaceable
grip back straps that allow changing the grip size.

It would take a fundamental redesign of the firing mechanism to shorten that trigger. Not just a trigger job. It is that way by design, in order to eliminate the need for a manual safety. As BEARDOG said, they are introducing a new, shorter trigger pull with the guns that have manual safeties. But, other than installing the 5 lb striker spring, I have seen no need to change mine.

I sure wouldn't take it to just any "gunsmith"... for most it would be a "learning" experience... not necessarily a good one!
Some have polished the trigger bar and parts and put in a 5-lb striker spring, but Wolff says that should be for competition only... not a "you-bet-your-life" deal for some perceived better trigger action. Whoever you get to work on your defensive weapons should be an expert and know WTF he/she's doing!

That's a CYA thing. If you want to install it, test it out at the range for a few hundred rounds before you trust your life to it.

I have carried all my guns at one time or another.
And most of them are modified (Four with the triggers).
But I do truly approach modifications with caution.
And always perform a 200 round test run, with SD ammo,
after any modification.

That's not bad. I'm fine with mine as is but I'd like to hold that once just to see what it feels like. I got an officer that could sure benefit from something like that. Never seen such long fingers.

Thanks, Greg.:)
B, my hands are very small, but the trigger reach is still a little too short for me on my CM9. I am thinking of a $0 solution: adding a filler on the backstrap under the Qwik-Grip. I already have the 5 lb striker spring and sure don't need a trigger job. I'll probably use the hockey tape that I bought to improve the grip on my Cold Steel Roach Belly Knife (worked great!). In fact, I have two carefully trimmed pieces of it covering the cheese graters now. I ordered rubber Traction Grip Enhancers to try on the grip sides and park the Qwik-Grips. But now I'm thinking about this trigger reach enhancement.
