View Full Version : If you drive a motorcycle to your job which doesn't allow you to carry, what to do?

The private company that I work for has it listed in our employee manual that no weapons can be brought to work, even if the employee is permitted to have them unless they are law enforcement and the punishment is termination.
It's an old manual (well before WI was CCW) but it stands.
If I drive my car to work it's fine, I can unholster, store my cm9 in a lockbox in my car and there isn't an issue, after work I can reholster and go on my way.
If I drive my motorcycle (soft saddle bags). I would either need to leave it at home completely or store it before getting to work. The same activity of putting it in a lock box and then into a saddle bag would be much more flagrant than I can do it in a car.
Is anyone else in this position? I'm not terrible concerned about finding a solution because I can see my vehicle from my work constantly (don't have a long walk or parking garage to deal with) and I thankfully live/work in a pretty safe area but if I'm able to carry I would like to carry.
Thanks! :D

I would notthink they wold go throughg ur car of cycle unless someone alerted them to 9it. Guesws maybe one should check that out though, There are some bag logs now for soft bags.
Harley makes a universal saddlebag lock kit (2 locks) part # 90300017 for $49.95, works great I have seen um on Heritage bags and they look custom. Hell just do one side even. Error on the side of caution, for u know it could be ur job on the line:behindsofa:

On my Heritage, I opened up one of the holes in the locking straps so I can fit a lock thru it below the buckle, that prevents the strap from going thru the buckle to open the bag in the normal fashion, but they could still get in easily enough with a sharp knife by cutting the straps above the lock. I want to get a set of locking hard bags for it one of these days.

I never lock my hard bags on my 2 street glides, so they willjust steel the entire hard bag as u know two twists of the release and it is gone gone. If they wkant um they will getum but yoiur lock thing might keep a fella out of trouble on the4 job site but not for thieves. They now think u got something to hide therej.
IMO a Hertiage is not a Heritage with hard bags..:behindsofa:

Is being fired the worst that could happen? I you carried at work and were found out would you have broken a WI law or statue? Do you sign something each year affirming that you understand and will conform to the companies guidelines? Do you have a .380 and a SmartCarry holster?

Wi law says they cannot prohibit you from having it in your vehicle do that's not my worry. Being fired wouldn't be the worst (arrrrrggg workload lately) but explaining why I was fired to an employer might not be fun, I live and work around the Madison area so guns are evil and all that mentality prevails.

Classic risk reward scenario. Which is greater, the risk of getting caught with a gun and getting fired, or ending up in a situation where you need your gun and don't have it. Only you can decide based on where you work, who you work with, what kind of neighborhood your place of employment is, etc.
I was never fond of leaving anything of value in my leather saddle bags. I don't think I would do that. Way too easy to get into them, and you wouldn't want your gun in the hands of a thief.
Might be worth a call to an attorney to see if their rule holds any weight against state statutes. Here in Orygun, the universities tried to ban handguns on campus, and a judge struck that down in favor of citizens right to carry.
Like Bill K suggests, a nice little pocket carry 380 might just be the ticket for those sunny days when you want to take your bike to work.

Ahhhh, the joys of being self employed.

When I worked in the oilfield there were times when you weren't supposed to have firearms with you due to being on private property, but everyone I knew still carried or at the least kept something in the truck. If your not being patted down or run through a metal detector every day then I would seriously consider keeping it with you.

I have been around alot of motorcycle events and staye d in alot of motels wiht bike parked outside. I havenot seen it haqppenb to any people ever arund me with bag break inb's etc. sure it can happen but I would certainly think in a work pakring lot, the chances are far less of this ever happ;ening. I woul dnot risk my job over it. Hell they will steal the entire bike if they really want it. Locks are for honest people only.
Mayhbe I hve been lucky to, over the years.

My work is the same. I typically leave it at home if I am on the bike.
I work at a place with 24/7 security, patrolling the parking lot. My truck was broken into, at 1130AM, with people driving by, with the alarm going off.
I dont trust people as far as I can throw any of my motorcycles, and I am not breaking the law to carry inside (no metal detectors, but legal signage prohibiting lawful carry)
YMMV.

If all you have is soft bags I guess you have to leave the gun home if your concerned about someone breaking into them. My Roadking has hard bags that lock. I lock my gun up in it. It might not be theft proof but it keeps the honest people honest. Was down in Daytona a few years back and quite a few bikes that left there bags unlocked during the night woke up to find there bags gone along with there windshields. I was lucky my bags were locked so they moved on to easier pickins. I was lucky that night because I just happened to take the windshield into the room to clean it off in the shower. Sad part is besides have there bags and windshields stolen, quite a few of those guys rode those bikes to Daytona in some pretty cold/ nasty weather.
If you make it to easy they'll take it, especially in todays economy where people will steel anything. I'd be willing to bet half the parts you see on craigs list and the like are stolen parts. I can't tell you how many times I've replaced the center caps on the my Chevy pickup wheels because any fool with a cordless drill and a socket can snatch them in 30 seconds and get pretty good money for them.

Couple different ways to approach this. Here at my work it's sometimes best not to ask since you almost assuredly won't like the answer.
But depending on your job and your relationship with your supervisor at whatever level you might inquire about a personal safe, I'm not sure if your in an office environment or construction or what.
That's basically what they offered me. I can carry into the building and lock it in my personal safe at my cubicle.
Failure to do so could end up in termination but in true Tilos fashion I look at it as just a job. Not a big demand for old deaf derelicts in wheelchairs so it's hard to think like that.
Originally I just carried 2 guns since I figured they would ask me if I had a gun on my person I could say no since two is actually guns or a plural situation. Jocko that means more than one so you don't have to look it up.
So now I lock my 1911 in my personal safe and we don't need to talk about where the PM45 might be, I'm not even sure myself.
I think they know, but for liability reasons they prefer to say they didn't know if something happens.
The fact that I have 3 Glock 21's usually at my desk (spares) and access to 20 AR15's, shotguns, MP5's and two full auto M14's doesn't seem to bother them.
I summary I personally will not go to work nekkid. Ain't gonna happen.
When I was a carpenter I had a special nail bag on my tool belt to hold a gun with a velcro flap to keep most of the sawdust out.

I watch u like a hawk after a rabbit!! Not in a mano mano way either.
Keep your soft saddle bags. Put a small hole in one bottom buy a gunvault run the cable prov8dedra by Gunvault through the bottom of bag secure to frame and you have a secure setup.

P.s. sense this forum is now family friendly my daughter wants to know what the word with the dollar sign in it means?
You have options!
1. Get a new job
2. Drive a cage
3. Carry anyway
Been there done that - won't say which.

My vault fits perfectly in the bottom of my lunch container but I would rather leave it in the car locked up twice than in my lunch box.

I guess I should have said that I CARRY my lunch box, & it's always with me, so not a problem with anyone getting it. Everyone has seen what I eat so not much problem with poachers!
