39. Trying not to think about 40.

I have a two year old daughter and another one on the way, so they will force me to stay young for a few years yet... although I think I've officially reached that age where most everyone on TV seems younger than me!

We got married at that age, but didn't have kids till now. Waited till we finished school, then till we started a business, then till the business got going... you get the picture. We really enjoyed our time together (just us), but now I see my 2 year old daughter and know I shouldn't have waited so long.

It's all in your head... and I still feel like a young lad of 40, but the danged mirrors and especially photos, all make me look older than the 66 I'm approaching this June!

Last year I was watching a Louis Black 60th Birthday Special on Comedy Channel. He said that when he was a young man he was asked what he expected to die of... and he answered "SIXTY!". That's pretty much the way I grew up... thinking that was the age everyone died. Then with all of the celebrities dieing off at 52, I thought that would be the time... especially since my dad didn't quite make it to 52... and my mother died just before 48.

Now I'm fast approaching 66 and every once in awhile I get these reminders that I'm not in my twenties any more... forgetting stuff... like why I got up and came in here... or looking in the pantry, the utility room, or who knows where for something that's in the fridge... or the freezer... or those illusive names ... or words... whatever that are right on the tip my tongue... it seems... but just out of sight of my mind!

It's not just the parts that click and crackle when I get up or walk that remind me these days! That sure doesn't keep me from wanting to buy more "toys" or "prepping" a bit!

Wynn:)

Speaking of age... I accidentally clicked on Calendar and saw that there were 18 members' birthday coming up on the fourth... and 15 are going to be 27! What the heck happened that day... or night nine months before that date 27 years ago??

Was that the night of a big blackout or something??

AHA! I just figured out it was July the 4th, 1985... big celebration?

I am finding myself more tolerant in some areas and more cranky in others. One thing is I don't tolerate BS as well now.

I think work has a lot to do with my attitude in the last few years, mostly negative.

Popeye
04-01-2012, 05:14 PM
I'm the same way,I have zero tolerance for BS and BS'ers, and phoney people with egotistical attitudes. I left those types behind 8 years ago when I retired. Now I try to keep things as simple and real as possible and be thankful for the things I have, and things I don't have. Enjoy everyday for what it brings my way as best I can and enjoy the family and friend I do have.

Some things to ponder.
As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play, on the computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to
those wonderful tunes of the 50, 60 & 70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.

I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to,
despite the pitying glances from the jet set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, I eventually remember the important
things.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when
somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But, broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion. A heart never
broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep
grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned
the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while
I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single
day (if I feel like it).

I personally have found myself more cranky and impatient when it comes to work. I have been in commercial construction going on 34 years now and have seen the sorry trend going down hill especially over the past five or so years. Most of the GC's & subcontractors {competition and I do use that tern rather loosely}we are forced to work with couldn't find their collective asses with both hands and a search warrant. I pray that I will be granted the strength to last another 5-6 years.
Although I hate discourtious and agressive drivers on the road, I do tend to let those things go when in the past I wouldn't have.
POPEYE that entry was rather profound and has made me think quite a bit. I can only hope that in time I can achieve the same state of mind as you sir.

At first I was surprised to see the stats showing so many "older" folks in the survey but thinking about it more it makes sense. Unfortunately all to often us older folks are viewed as easier pickings to the bad guy. Also, I feel us old farts find it easier to tote our Kahrs as opposed to the full sized guns we might have carried in the past. Make any sense or should I step away from my computer and go give my rocking chair a workout? :)

56 here. Somedays I feel 25 other days I feel 85. Wish it would settle in on a comfortable number I could live with. Patience is improving for some things but is shorter with fools and boneheads.
The one thing I have noticed though, with my kids I am gaining intelligence year by year. The things I was a moron at 5 years ago, I am now a genius at. Funny how that works.

Most of his rifles were like that. If my buddy doesn't keep them oiled they would all be rusted up. Heck, he even has an AR with a 7.62x39 upper with Gen III night vision that only has about 40 rounds through it that is almost 8 years old.

I can accept little use, I have many guns that rarely ever get shot, some that have never been shot, that can still be love. But neglect, rust, there should be laws against that.
I had a Match Target Colt AR that probably only saw 50 rounds in 8 years or so before I sold it a couple months ago. I guess while I liked it I just haven't been bitten by the black rifle bug. I'd take a M14 any day. Gotta have a little wood.

Jocko, I attribute my blown engine to a damn full face helmet, the chin bar kept me from checking the oil pressure guage and light with my periphreal vision, and would have to take my eyes off the road and look down to see them, a lot can happen in a split second when doing that, so I didn't check as often as I should have and I think the oil pump went out and I didn't notice until I heard the racket. I figured the engine was boogered and rode it about 3 more miles on whatever film the Amsoil left, never did throw a rod thru the jug or anything, mostly messed up the crankshaft and cam and there were a lot of other parts I'm not sure what they were in the case. I do want to get one of those lightweight carbon fiber helmets, as my shorty helmet looks ridiculous on me with my small head and the one size fits all helmet shell. There used to be and outfit that made different shells for the different sized helmets, but there website was gone last I looked. And if I'm going to wear a helmet, I want it to do the job, unlike those tight fitting "novelty" helmets that don't do much good in a spill.

Worst was a broken ankle after side swiping a retainer wall after I was hit in the head with what I was believe was a walnut knocked out of a tree by a squirrel. Sounds funny I know but they were all over the side of the roadway.
That Mother Flocker hit me in the helmet like a Nolan Ryan fastball. Knocked me stupid for a few seconds. Only to be awoken by the sound of metal scraping a stone retainer wall and some very severe pain in my right ankle. Managed to keep the bike up by a power greater greater than myself but the next 8 eeks were a bit rough. Still to this day I can not believe I didn't go down. Really do believe those experienced riders courses I take ever couple years and a power great than myself is what kept it from being a lot worse than it was. Ankle still hurts some on cold damp days but believe that keeps it real when it comes to motorcycle riding. But I'm to young (65) to get off. I've just learned to take it a little slower and enjoy the ride and my surroundings a little more. I'm in no hurry as I've been there and done that already. Always swore though that the day I think I know it all about motorcycles is the day I will no longer be teachable and I'll get off because that is the day I will have surely lost my mind and will not only be a danger to myself but to others also.
I wouldn't like to get off but in reality I've done more traveling with the wife and by myself than I ever thought I would. H*ll there was a time in my life working seven days a week in construction to make ends meet I never would have ever believed I'd own a Harley Davidson much less three of them. I have a little saying when it comes to riding Harley Davidsons.
" You can get off track and take the long way home, but you can't take the wrong way home." It's all about the ride.

I got into Harley's very late (yeah I admit it a bit of poser-itis) and the affliction did not stick mainly because with a Road Glide and my even then advanced age and too late to develop skills it - no I - was not safe.

Toyed with the Tri-Glide thing. Maybe if/when it comes down to not riding or going three-wheeled - well - at least you'll have a choice.

YIKES! The only right hander at Road Atlanta that is on the crest of a hill that I can recall is going under the bridge and that was/is one tricky turn.

Way back in the 70's when we had tickets to every event the only events we skipped were the bike events.

That's the one, turn 11 !! I was practicing on Saturday for the 600 SuperSport race on Sunday. I was trying to keep the throttle pegged through the bend, because the natural tendency is to let off because you can't see over the crest. I made it through twice but the front got light going over the hill on the third lap and down I went. It was a pretty wild ride.

To grow old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

My first military issue rifle was an M1 then on to a M14. Stoners were being issued as I departed Ft. Benning.

For some reason, I have none of me on my bike. I have a few with other people riding it but not me. :001_huh:

This happened over twenty years ago, and if anyone got a picture, I don't know about it. If you want to see the bike, look at my avatar. Yep, it's the same bike. I raced it from 1987 to 1991 when I retired from bike racing. I replaced some plastic, footpegs, etc, cleaned it up, and still ride it today. It was twenty-five years old in January, and still looks and runs like new.

O'Dell, are you the rush hour rocket? During the almost 12 years I worked for Georgia-Pacific and drove to and from work between Gwinnett County and downtown along I-85, 2 or 3 times I would be driving as fast—or slow—as I could go in the fast lane, when a death defying Ninja on a very high performance motorcycle would flash by me in the H.O.V. lane doing about 140! So fast that he showed up in an instant and was out of sight over the next rise in a couple of seconds. You know how gradual the curves are on I-85 approaching the city? Well, he was going so fast his footpeg was almost dragging going around them!

Talk about dangerous. If the fast lane was flowing, people would move into the H.O.V. lane going 75. It would be hard for him to come out of a turn and miss one of those, but imagine it when traffic is slowed and people are moving over there at 45 or less!!!

Craziest thing I ever saw! Thrice!!!

I just found out I am in a minority group. I think I will complain that I am being treated unfair. You guys are heaping bad posts toward my minority group. (I am in the over 70 group) Actually there are no posts against my minority. I love guns and have been a gun owner for over 70 years. I got my first 22 rifle at age 14. The gun is a clasic collectable now. Unfortunatly I don't have it any more. Am not sure where it went as when I went into the Army at 18 it dissapeared before I got out. The good news is, I have aquired some other collectable guns later and these I keep a close eye on.:D

I'd say at over 70 your probably a collectible yourself. We do so miss the collectible guns we let get away sometimes before we knew they were collectible.

Take care of the ones you got and focus on getting some more. Can't hurt.

Not everyone is suppose to understand. Same as not everyone understands our love for guns, boats, cars, cameras, woodworking, etc. The idea is to enjoy doing what your doing know matter what it is, or what anybody thinks about it. If I I have to explain my love for motorcycles and guns most wouldn't understand, and if they had to explain I'm afraid I would understand. Important thing is,We all have to dance to our own tune, and lifes to short to dance with ugly people.;)

"lifes to short to dance with ugly people."

I've been thinking about a tattoo. I think I just found out what to say. Priceless.

I was thinking about getting the Nina, the Pinta, and the Sainta Maria all sinking across my chest but I'm kind of scared and hate needles an the freaky look of the tattoo people. This could be smaller and maybe less painful.
Thought about on my forehead but maybe an arm would be better.

I bought my first 22 when I was eleven in 1955. It was a Remington Model 530 and I paid $9.95 for it. I priced one recently on GB, and they were going for about $350. Mine still in the attic and it's not going anywhere.

Didn't we do this before? I am 44. If we keep doing this regularly I can answer every year. Do it on my birthday if you are going to do that guys.

I do like the idea of buying a gun in the caliber of your birthday, but that gets harder as you get older unless you are into black powder. ;) I am not into black powder, so better start saving now for 50....

Found the right caliber of gun to match my age.
But I don't think I'm allowed to own one of these.
So what do I do about that?

The past cannot be changed, and the future cannot be known.
