View Full Version : Got Mace?

Does anyone carry mace in addition to their EDC gun? I was thinking it might be useful if BG has no weapon, but is intent on causing harm. Less legal ramifications?

No, but does a Fox 5.3 streamer count?

The spray is for four legged(s) - dogs - when I am walking my two GSDs and should we come across an off-leash.

But I do carry the spray as well as my P45 CCW.

If I come across a BG and sense that something is gonna happen, the P45 will come out NOT the spray. I am NOT waiting to determine if the BG is armed or not - too late.

But your inquiry seems worthy of a bit of discussion...

Thanks,

Pete

PS
I also live in Florida so unless anyone has been living under a rock...

First mace is worthless unless you aim to p!ss some one off. Get some good LE rated pepper spray (fox labs 5.3 is my preferred). Second LE considers pepper spray lower on the force continuum than even open hand strikes. Third train with it, yes it hurts, and yes it sucks, but you need to know that you can still function after an exposure, and that everyone around will be exposed when you pop that stuff. Be careful of local regulations as well, some places regulate that stuff almost like a firearm. I think that options between fists and guns are good, but here for example, tasers (and even stunguns, yes there is a difference) are regulated just like firearms, in fact if I can taze some one I can shoot them. Batons are a no go here (illegal club as defined in then Penal Code, except for licensed peace officers), and OC can actually bring a disorderly conduct charge depending on the responding officer's temperament (noxious odors produced by chemical means). So the only thing that we can do around here is have a knife, and a gun with a CHL unless LE. As far as the legal ramifications, it can be considered assault, and perhaps aggravated assault if the scrote runs and tattles. That can be more hassle than you want. Sorry for making things clear as mud.

Sure I carry some Fox spray with me pretty much everywhere, there are some situations where shooting is not appropriate but a little pepper spray will do the job. It's also nice to have some when I go places I can't legally carry.

I keep mace in car, had a idiot decide he wanted to play "road rage"on me a while back and jumped out of his truck with bat in middle of traffic and ran towards my car, I invited him to continue saying I would be spraying him.....he changed his mind. Good deterrent in my opinion rather than firearm. He wanted to cut me off to make right turn and I had no where to go to let him in.

Excellent thought. I'm putting a can in my wifes car and maybe one in mine too.
Very good plan.

Here's a funny for you. I used to carry a lipstick size pepper spray in a leather key chain holder in my truck's side door compartment. Was having truck washed one day at full service car wash. Had left truck at front of line and went in to pay bill. After paying bill, I looked out window and saw a guy "laid out" beside my truck with 3 or 4 of his friends standing over him. Went outside to find out what was wrong and one of his buddies was about to double over with laughter. This guy had thought it was breath spray and used it on himself. Served him right.

certainly have a good pint there. I have used that sh-t in wasps at well beyond 20 feet and it kills them dead. Nice thing about being in a car how is an officer gonna get into ur sh-t forhaving pepper spray or something on that order, when u have a can of wasp spray sittng next tyo u. That is a super duper idea there and that stuff will work:behindsofa:

Pepper spray. Make sure you know how you will react when you are exposed to it. The mist is "non-selective".

Guess what....brake cleaner or carb cleaner also drops bee's dead. :yo:

Works great when attacked by bee's when putzing in the garage!

Be careful leaving pepper spray in your truck! Both I & a friend had cans explode in our trucks in the Az. heat of summer!

the kimber pepper blaster uses a charge of nitrogen to blast glob of pepper at they claim 90mph. so ypou do not have to worry about it blowing back on you. the owner of lgs and i killed a mimosa tree at about 25 feet. it was propeled so fast we just saw it hit about 3 ft circle well soaked.

That's funny when I was a young cop we use to use it similarly to discourage the "token suckers". The subway creatures use to clog the old turnstiles, and then suck out peoples tokens with a straw. Later they would turn in the tokens for $1 each (back then) and make a nice living during rush hour in NYC. We use to load up the jammed slot with pepper spray and then rfloao when they thugs came up red-faced, spitting and hacking. Hey while it may not be in any manual or guide, its damn effective street justice. :) Just pour some water on the turnstile and it was rendered safe again until the repair man fixed it

Anybody know if it's legal to use chemicals like wasp spray of carb/brake cleaner on people? I'm just thinking that pepper spray is designed to incapacitate without causing permanent injury, but those chemicals could and probably would cause some kind of serious injury (especially if inhaled). I think the blood sucking lawyers would be standing in line for a case like that.

Just thinking out loud.

I think the label on the can saying not to use in a manner other than intended use would sink you in a court case. SHouldn't be the fact if you are defending yourself, but stranger things have happened...

Actually, there is some danger to that and I am glad some one brought it up. Wasp and hornet spray will cause blindness and pain (that now classifies it as serious bodily injury and makes things go straight to aggravated assault). That stuff uses a neuro-toxin to kill the pests, and can and likely will cause blindness if medical attention is not quickly applied. Now you will have used something that is far above pepper spray on the force continuum and may likely face some felony level charges. The using not in accordance with the label applies, and could be included as a lesser offense, but that is more for the huffers than anything else. At least that's kinda how things work around these parts. There is also the excessive force issue that could be brought up as well. I'd say leave that stuff for the bugs.

I would stick with the pepper spray - Keep the lawyers poor - Wasp spray and carb cleaner can do a lot more damage (I think but have never seen an actual test) thaen pepper. Since many of us CCW we are likely to use the spray before a deadly threat develops (and have a plan B on our belt) so really harming someone is probably a bad option. If you need to stop them - use a gun. The wasp / carb cleaner is really for the scared housewife who has someone come through the front door - and doesn't have a better option.

Wow..didn't mean to stir up such a hornets nest. (pun intended), but glad I did. Didn't think about all the ramifications etc. The way it started was when my dtr started driving and was out after dark etc, was a little worried about how she could protect herself if broke down or something. Somewhere someone mentioned the hornet spray and I thought it made sense. Fortunately she had not had any incidents and I pray she never does. On the positive side she is 18 now and we plan on getting a stun gun for her at the next gun show, and now maybe the pepper spray as well. Got her to the range last weekend for the first time and she actually enjoyed it, so who knows what the future holds.

I would assume that if a situation warranted deadly force (remember there are different standards for women being attacked by men - the man is almost always assumed to be able to inflict great bodily harm) Wasp spray, a gun, an axe or just about anything would be justified. Its that middle ground between fistfight and gunfight where the use of something that can cause great bodily harm (like blindness) may not be justified.

I like pepper spray because if you make a mistake - everybody still goes back to work Monday morning.
