Very nice. Know nothing about the BHPs... Is the piece with the external extractor a newer or older design?

Bill K -- the external extractor is the newer design. Apparently the internal extractors were somewhat of a weak link and the design was changed in the 1960's.

As we spoke of before I have the twin to # 3 but yours looks way way nicer than mine. That's a beautiful Hi Power family you got going there. Hope your not using any precautions and the family continues to grow.

Naaah, the only "protection" is the scarcity of resources! I've decided to limit my "collecting" to those pieces which are no longer in production. Therefore it's BHPs for handguns and M1903s and M1 Garands for rifles.

I shopped for 20+ years for my Garand, I was afraid of getting a parts put together and couldn't learn enough to really trust myself.
I finally bought one sight unseen from a friend of a friend. It was a DCM gun, turns out it was a select version (not necessarily mint or even good but rarer or something special about them, mine was one of the early ones where they started grenade launching, it's black at the back of the receiver where they dipped in in molten lead to temper it as they were known to crack) and it turned out to be a genuine beauty. Only got the one but it's keeping me very happy.
I have one 1903 and a coupe 1917's, would like another completely stock 1903 someday.

My first pistol was a HP in 1966. I bought it for my service carry when the Navy tried to issue me a S&W 38. It has some holster wear, but was still running fine when I packed it away some years ago. I bought another in the early eighties, but since I have shifted to mostly 45's, I gave it to my son for his birthday last year. I doubt that it had 500 rounds through it and was still pristine.

Your 1953... I think is older. I'm not sure if any post war FN GP's had the thumbnail. Could be I'm wrong... but I know the thumbnail cuts are older ones. Not helping matters were FN's habit of re-using serial numbers for various runs. You can have four digit and five digit FN's from the 30's and from the 50's.

I have been a fan of the BHP for many years; I have a few as well. Don't shoot them much anymore, guess I am saving them for something, not sure what. I do plan to give each of my son's one or two down the road.

SpecK -- thanks, sir! No, none of these are slotted. I passed on an auction for a slotted, tangent sight BHP -- but maybe I shouldn't have. Oh well. They come around every now and then but I almost never find them locally.

CJB -- thanks so much for the close look and your thoughts on the 1953 model. I was first told that it was a '55 based on the markings. Then I sent an email to FNH in Belgium. It took them about three weeks to get back to me but they said it was made in March of 1953. I was really hoping that it was older since it is in mostly excellent condition. I don't know if it is original to the pistol, but it was sold to me with a German hard case holster. The holster is not marked with the serial number of the pistol but is marked with a first initial and last name.
