View Full Version : Bar-Dot Alignment

Hey All,

I just got back from some trigger play, and I'm LOVING the rear bar sight on the CW9. I'm previously used to the three-dot sights on my K9.

How do all you experienced bar-dot shooters align your sights?

My best groups were when lining up the very top of the front sight with the very top of the rear sight (not "dotting" the i, but covering it). The range was packed, so we were shooting at 15yds, and I was extremely satisfied with my new CW!!

That's the way I line them up too, with tops of the sights aligned. I don't use the top of the dot... or the post. They're for quick general alignment.

I only have the P40 with those sights... until I can find better. I want the new Trijicon HD NS, but they don't make them for Kahrs... yet, I'm hoping, though. I have the 3-dot NS on all the rest of my defensive pistols and the HD NS on my XD45... fantastic!

Of course since it's been asked I don't really know. With both of my pistols I put the front sight on target and squeeze the trigger. Not much else I can say. LoL. But I do really like the bar-dot sights on Kahrs. Quick and easy acquisition.

I'd like to put them on my XDM but I really like the red fiber optic on the 5.25 XDM too.

Yup, the bar sights are awesome for quick alignment. It would be nice to have the Trijicon HD or the Truglo Fiber Optic as a front sight for the CW line.

I'm noticing significantly tighter groups with the bar sight compared to the groups with my three-dot sights on my K9.

I went from the origional factory sights to Trijicon 3 dot night sights both front and rear on my CM9. I really liked the factory sights and I was VERY accurate with them. But, in my mind, the plastic front had to go. I was afraid I'd lose my tight groups when I switched. I was wrong. I'm getting 2.5"-3" groups with 50 rounds into the target at 15 yards. I shoot the CM better than any other handgun I own. My conclusion is, "It's the gun not the sights." I have not taken a picture of any of my targets recently. However, here are 2 pic's I posted somewhere in the forum before... 50 rounds at 15 yards. BTW, I do practice at self defense distance 3 and 5 yards. But it makes me more all around confident to have good results from further back. The more challenging I make it, the easier it is when it is less challenging.

WOW!!!! Awesome target. Thanks! Two different targets at separate range trips. Different ranges too.

I can do that!!! I just hate to waste good targets though, so I tend to aim at a target like that but shoot way off to the side of the target. U see I am a card carrying "conservative"

There is nothing wrong with using "all the paper." LOL

I have this pic. Here I still had the factory sights. Outdoor range at 23 feet. I call it, "One and Done." I unpacked all my stuff. Set up my target. Fired my first shot and this was the result. I figured it was nothing but down hill from here. So, I called it a day, pack up and went home with a smile on my face.

Nice to see someone shooting who understands sight alignment and trigger control. Your targets look a lot like mine. CM9s are very accurate little guns.

I like to see holes appear, so I use all of the paper. Putting them in the same hole gets boring!

But, DANG! Did you use a machine rest?? That's terrific shooting, Markis'.

Yep, you and Wynn have it right. The straight edges of your sights should always be used if you can see them. If you can't then the white markings or tritium should be used. I find 2 dots on the rear sight unnecessarily busy and prefer the single post that Kahr and Sig use. On my defensive Glocks I get 3 dot Ameriglo Operator sights where the rear sight only has tritium, no white markings.

I just put a Dawson Precision tritium front sight on my CM9 and it works well with the factory rear sight.

I did that once. I had been sighting in my 45 carbine at 25 yards, and when I finished, I pulled the CW40 out of my holster; I didn't have the CW45 then. Anyway, I one handed a shot and nailed the one inch 10 ring dead center. I wasn't as smart as you, because I finished the mag. I didn't have another shot within an inch of that first one.

Awsome shooting! I too want some trijicon night sights for my cw. Are they easy to install yourself? I know I wouldn't have a problem with the front sight but the rear I'm not sure about.

I just bought my first Kahr a PM9 and went to the range with it for the first time yesterday. My Sigs have the bar and dot sights. I dot the i and the center of the dot should be the POI. My new Kahr seems to be set up the same way. I like that.
I must say I am very impressed with the Kahr. I shot 200 rounds of American Eagle 124gr and 50 rounds of Federal HST 124gr without a hiccup. The Kahr is just as accurate as my Glock 23 at 10yds. This was surprising. Once the PM9 is fully broken in and tested I believe it will be my new daily carry weapon.

I know I wouldn't have a problem with the front sight but the rear I'm not sure about.I installed the front sight myself and sent the slide to Kahr to have the rear installed. I later found out that Kahr charges the same price whether they install one sight or both sights. Even though the front was very easy to install, if I had it to do over again I'd have them do both if only to quality for both being under warrantee.

So you have the best result aligning the top of your rear sight with the center of your front sight, am I correct? And, do you place this below the bullseye or center bullseye?

I need to shoot at a closer range to get a better feel for the exact sweet spot.

That's the normal POA=POI. That's why it's a good idea to practice a lot at the range. You start with POA=POI and adjust your aim as required... for your actual sights impacts... or your consistent shooting technique... as evidenced by your groupings.

Thanks, Markis', that's the classic POA=POI and great if that's where the bullets impact. In practice, based on your own groupings, you might be able to figure out what works for you, though, at the ranges you shoot... that's why we practice at the range.

I gotta become more familiar with the sweet spot on all of my pistols. Being able to transition smoothly from my three-dot pistols to my bar-dot pistols would be ideal. I really like the concept of the bar-dot, as I notice a quicker acquisition of aim.

Here, as well. I kinda want to put the bar-sight on my K9 to keep a consistant balance with my CW9, but I may do it down the road some time.

I heard some owners of the bar-sights have experienced the sight paint removed from gun cleaner

That's what I'm afraid of happening. However, I just ordered some Bright Sights paint in case I encounter this issue, and also to paint my front sight bright yellow.
