I now have 5 of the 6 rounders for my CM9, 4 6 rounders for my P238, 5 7 rounders for my 1911, 3 15 rounders for my Sig 2022, 2 10 rounders for my Bersa UC40.
How many is too many?

I like to have 3 mags per handgun. One in and two back-up. I'm not expecting a war, but may have to deal with more than one attacker.

Uncle Bawanna would say never enough. jocko would say one and done. Dietrich would have said forget the magazines, go straight for the videos. I say four. My answer, obviously, is the least important to heed. ;)

I also have 3 per handgun. But I don't carry an extra, the extra 2 are backups and range mags. I'd like to have more, but I would rather spend for ammo and fund the gun kitty.

I have to start carrying a 2nd magazine. I only carry the Kahr and the Bersa, the rest are just for range use.
But to only carry 7 rounds like in the CM9's case is not enough.

I carry two spares, for my rifles I have several more, for two of my pistols, I have four magazines. Old habits are being relearned.
Two extra mags for the primary, one extra mag for the backup.

I like to have 6 mags at least for each gun. One in the gun, and 2 on the belt. Every couple months I'll swap to the other 3 and let the originals rest.
With the improvement in springs now days I don't think it's necessary but I still do it. One nice thing about having 1911's is the same 6 mags can work for numerous guns and since they work in my PM45 too, it just can't get any better.

I forget to swap out which mags I keep loaded and rotate them. That's a great point. I knew it, but I just don't do it.
I have no excuse to not do it now.

I don't believe in giving magazines a rest. As soon as they are empty I refill 'em.

For my Kahrs and CCW, I have a minimum of 6 per Kahr... Kahr mags. I have a lot of 1911-type mags that I bought to try with my PM45. With the two that came with my 2nd P380... Wifey's, I now have 8x6-rounders and 4x7-rounders for them.
I like lots of magazines for the range. I carry a reload with my Kahrs... the highest capacity extended-grip... with the shortest one in the pistol for concealment.
I think a minimum for an SD pistol is 3... One in the gun and a reload for carry, and one for a spare, so that you'll have two for carry should one break. Just having ONE mag is crazy. What if it breaks? We've seen one guy get pretty hysterical when his ONE mag malfunctioned! Things break... think "spare tire" in a gun way.
In "the heat of the battle" things don't go as planned... or as you would like. With adrenaline surge and the "fight or flight" self-defense mode your body goes into, you get tunnel vision and your fine motor skills are degraded. You fumble with your gun or maybe you're grappling with a BG... the magazine can be dropped and go flying. No time outs in a fight for your life... it's nice to have another mag handy. I also carry a knife, too, because you never know when you'll be in a situation where you're grappling with someone and you gun goes flying away from you... or the BG is trying to take yours... and something for your OTHER hand to grab and use could be handy. I carry the Gerber F.A.S.T. Draw with assisted opening so that I know it will open with one hand.

I keep some mags loaded for carry with SD ammo... usually three... one in the gun and two spares with it. My PM45 is closest now and it has a 7-round extended-grip loaded and three other mags... two in holders. Well, my closest is my P380. I've been wearing it all day... been working on my front door and in and out of the house all day. The painters come tomorrow and I still have a problem with a piece of trim to resolve early tomorrow. I bought an electric 2" brad/nailer that seems to be a POS. Maybe every third or fourth one will go to the surface... the rest half way or less. Those things don't nail with a hammer and are a b!tch to pull out... usually pulling the trim off with the silicone all over the place! I finally had to resort to using finish nails and long screws after counter-boring the holes to be filled in. It was really aggravating! I've been thinking a lot about how $300 doesn't seem like to much to install a danged door NOW!
Dang! I still have my TAXES to do, too. I tried to get Congressional help because of the "bookkeeping change" from the 1st of the next month to the last week day of the month for retired military pay. I've always... for decades... gotten mine in the bank by the end of the month, but now DFAS says we got 13 checks last year and my danged 1099-R says 13 months worth of pay, so the IRS wants more money at our top marginal rate of 25%. Another "unintended consequence" by congressional non-planners or thinkers, who don't consider the consequences of their actions... or just another oopsie, but we'll take your money. Anyhow, I've been too P.O.'d and now I gotta stop and get those done by Tuesday night. The bad thing is that I was expecting to get money back and now I'm not sure.:blah:

I usually carry 3 with me. If I'm just running to the gas station I usually just throw the ppks or model 36 in a pocket with one spare mag/speed strip in the opposite pocket.

I carry one in the gun and a second on the belt. But I also carry a bug, usually my 357 lcr.
However, for range use and rotation of loaded mags I have 4 per gun. I also number my mags. with a sharpie so I can keep track of rotation and/or (God forbid) mag problems.
Comp Glock = 4 mags
CCW Kahr = 2 mags
Think it depends on what you do with the gun and how many rounds the mags hold...

No such thing as too many mags, only not enough bullets.

I've got two, with a third on the way. When budget allows, I'll order a fourth.

I have a mag for a gun I've never owned and a caliber I've never fired. That's probably one too many.

Aucontraire Dirt doc, I have a box full. I use it as a goal in acquiring all the guns that use them so they don't go to waste.
I guess I'm a hoarder when it comes to gun parts. Friends will be tossing stuff, old friend pass and I get junk boxes from kids or wives etc.
I can't throw any of it away.

Unless you are a competition shooter or just have money to burn I say two per gun. At least that is what I do.

I have 3 per gun. Both of my semi-autos carry 6 rounds per mag—not high capacity. So that gives me 18 shots before I break for a reload or switch guns. Of course, having the option of carrying 1 or 2 spare mags is there, and having a backup for a non-functioning mag is essential, IMO.

When the 1994 ban was passed I was under 21 and not really thinking in terms of handguns and standard capacity magazines (I don't call them high capacity because the guns were designed for them then neutered with 10 round low cap mags). I will not make that mistake again if there is another restriction.
I mainly shoot Glocks. I like to have at least 10 standard capacity magazines for each gun or model of glock. I use the midway usa range bags that hold 7 mags each, one bag for each size and caliber of Glock I shoot (G17/34, G19, G22/24/35, G23), the other mags are either in use with deployed guns or in storage. I've got a couple dozen AR magazines on hand.
For my Kahr pistols I don't have the same 10 per model, I think 4 per gun is a good number, these having a capacity under 10 I'm not as concerned about them being legislated away. I may order more than 4 for the wife's new T9, it will likely get one of the midway usa range bags, so 7 may be the number on that gun.

I'm getting out on Tuesday to try out the last 2 mags that I bought from someone last week. They look and function fine hand racking, but I just want to make sure they feed okay in real life. That will give me a total of 5.

For the guns that I want to use in the case of a siege on my house, I have 11 magazines each. One in the gun, ten on the shelf.
For the rest, I have one in the gun and two on the shelf. I just don't feel comfortable having a gun without at least two extra magazines. It's not even about a combat situation. It's about making sure I have at least three magazines in case I suddenly find them out of circulation or something.
How many "should" you have? However many you WANT, of course.
