My husband and I will spend a fair amount of time in an RV during the summer months and I need ammo advise. When camping near others we want to use something with minimal penetration. We will have a 20 gauge shotgun, and various and 9mm. During hikes I will be carrying bear spray and a 357 lcr ruger with a fmj load. Thanks
birdshot for the 20 gauge, something really frangible for the pistols, maybe the mag safe loads?

kinda hard to beat the taurus 3" Judge IMO. 5 00 lead bullets coming out the end of the barrel will do wonders for any BG.

Yes, we have been looking at light turkey shoot for the 20 gauge.
WHat about glasser rounds for the 9mm?

I have the 2.5" Judge. Normally I keep it loaded with the 000 Buckshot (the 2.5" shell has four 000 pellets, the 3" shell has five of them). When I go to an RV park, I swap out the 000 buckshot for #4 shot.
I suspect there is a much larger range of shot sizes for the 20 gauge than for the 2.5" 410, so you have more choice. I'd suggest the heaviest bird shot you can get, or the lightest buck shot you can get.
I don't really have any suggestions for the 9mm for light penetration.

Really light buckshot or turkey shot is what I'd carry for something that won't over-penetrate.
For bears, I would go bigger than .357. .44 mag at the minimum. Even for black bears.

That's interesting les strat. I know that a bigger caliber would be better but when I was stationed at King Salmon Alaska (small radar station) in the early 80's we were told to carry a 357 for the bears. The locals carried sawed off shot guns with a mix of slugs and buck shot As of this last summer most guides are now carrying bear spray. A bear has a nose 10 times more sensitive than a blood hound and the spray is suppose to be effective. The 357 is primarily intended for a mountain lions and other pests.

glass silver tip round sin my K9 which is my home gun and aqlso in my J frame Model 60. Never did any penetration type tests but supposably they are a close quarter round that isnot supposed to penetrate like other hot rounds do. I don't carry them in y PM9 but I do carryt the pwoer ball round and I like it alot. I wopuld love to shoot 25 rounds of the glasser in my PM9 but it would break my baqnk acct. that sh! it very expensive.

when I was bowhunting in Utah with a friend kby the name of Rex Peterson, he owned the world record for a BOONE AND CroCKETT BLACK BEAR for many years, and he shot it will a ruger single six 22LR.

Jocko, did he shoot it through the eye? Wow, 22LR
I know years ago it was not uncommon for deer hunters to use a 22LR

That must have been before bears and deer wore eye armor, and when cops carried .38 revolvers.

I was not there when it happened. One can go back in the Boone and Crockett record books and find the info on Rex Peterson and his world recorld black bear.I seen the skull when I was hunting with him one year and it was massive.
I meet Rex whle bowhunting for Mt.Lion with undoubtely the great lion hunter in the U.S. back then, Willis Butolph. that man eat and slept Lion hunting. Rex was a protege of Willis and IMO he was a better lion hunter/trcker than willis, courst back then willis was getting up in the years to.

The September 30, 1971 article of The Deseret News. (Page 33)
Rex took the bear on June 30, 1970 in the North Fork of Pleasant Creek in Utah's Manti Mountain.
The article recalls the story; the bear swept up one of Rex's dogs and wouldn't let go, so Rex fired off 2 30-30 Win. slugs into the beast and it took 2 more rounds from a .357 Mag to get the bear to drop the dog. Then Rex put in 1 more 30-30 round to drop the bear, and now we has a World Record.

We are planning on getting a fifth wheel in the somewhat near future and cannot think of a better "RV" gun than the Judge...
until Smith and Wesson came out with the Gov'n! Haven't even thought of what ammo I want for minimal penatration. I like Win PDX .410's and haven't thought of what I'll throw in for .45 ACP.

well I was half right, but no 22 revolver was used. I guess I was dreamin that part but I was sure that is the story he told me. I also hunted with Richrd Hardy back then, we all 3 of us bowhunted for black bear in the bookcliffs. thanks Speck, that sure bruings back ol memories. Rex and I and my hunting buddy back home here hunted for 2+ weeks for Mtn lion in Utah back around that time and my buddy killed a Pope and Yong Liion that placed 3rd over al lin that recording period. Mine made the record books also but not as big, Two great lions though in 2 hard weeks of hunting. Oh for the good ol days back then.
today as I am alot older, and I appreciate the animals etc, I could never kill a Mtn lion. IMO What a majestic animal. Guess I am getting soft. Just sayin.

No problem Jocko. And Im in the same boat with you. Mtn Lions are great looking creatures, but they are certainly not a mountain bikers best friend so Ill keep the hot bullets close anyway

Maybe I am biased, because I own a Judge, but I think the Governor is kinda ugly.
Mainly it's the beige spots on the left side that turn me off, and the bit of silver-colored barrel sticking out the front of the otherwise black gun.
Also, I've never worked with moon clips, but I dislike the concept. I certainly would like to be able to use 45 ACP, but not at the expense of having to deal with moon clips.

I've never been a big fan of Taurus, no offense to those that have them. I am a big fan of S&W, and don't have a problem with the clips.
