Thinking about getting a dedicated car gun (got a new car friday so possibilies are endless right now) - So let's open this up:

1. Best gun to keep in the car?

2. Best place to keep it?

Finally, and this is a big one...

3. How is it carried?

Here's what Im thinking:
1. Using my pre-existing Ruger 22/45...
2. In the center console (even tho it could be tough to get to quickly and and without being seen)
3. Custom making a holster to ride in? I dont want a loaded weapon riding loosey goosey in the car.....what do you think?

Pictures. Show em if you got em

My answers:

1. Taurus Judge
2. In the side door panel
3. In a holster that I clip onto the side panel

I never ever leave a gun in a car.
Except when I had a small safe carriage bolted to the frame.

My gun(s) are always on me.
I prefer cross draw on my belt for easy access while driving.
Sometime an ankle holster, but that's not fast even seated.

I've been carrying the same pistol in my cars for years. It's an old HP C9 that I bought at a show for $99 with the idea of a dedicated car gun. It's large and clunky, but practically indestructible, reliable, fairly accurate, and if it were to disappear tomorrow, I really wouldn't care. I pull it out every three months or so, unload the mag, load the spare mag, clean it, and put it back in the glove compartment.

I keep it in the combo-lock metal container. Forgot who makes it, but its about $20. It has a cable that can be connected and looped around the seat. When I get in the car, I unholster and put the gun in the unlocked case. It is locked when I go somewhere guns aren't allowed. Unlocked, in place, on the floor is easier to get to than on the hip.

On my person or in a lockbox under the drivers seat cabled to a seat post.
Only under dire circumstances does it go in the lockbox.

Being I'm usually CCing my PM9 I don't have a dedicated Truck gun. I do have the Glock 26 that spends some time in a Harley saddle bag. So I guess if you wanted to consider that a Truck gun then yea it would be the glock 26.

I generally carry two weapons. The first usually my PM9 or PM45 witha 22 mag Pug as a back up. I also carry a spare mag for either primary carry. As far a a truck gun that duty falls to my XD 45 ACP Compact. That one is kept in a flip up console or when away from the truck, locked in a car safe. If caught up in exchange the XD runs dry, I default to either of my carry pieces by doing a NY reload, just throw down the XD and go to my primary. By that time I figure I was in a rather difficult spot and should be looking for an exit out of the immediate AO.
If that issn't possible I have led a full life....just fight to the last round then thay can have my weapon after they pry it from my dead hand. It would be such a shame not putting up a fight and giving them BG's a run for their money considering all the money Uncle Sam spent training me.

I don't adhere to leaving guns in cars myself. If you choose to do so I would strongly advise keeping it someplace away from registration, insurance and any other documents you may need in a traffic stop.

The door panel sounds like a relatively good idea long as it's completely out of sight when the door is open for any reason.

I would not go anywhere near that gun with an officer at the window unless you tell them first. Usually they won't care long as your honest or unless you look like a dirt bag. (there I go profiling again).

I believe our state law has changed now but it used to be if you were ordered out of the car, the gun had to come with you on your person.

Some states vary some on that.

I often keep a Charter Arms .44 snubbie and 2 speedloaders in the center console.
The console doesn't lock, but I have a good car alarm. If I end up getting one of those inexpensive CZ-82's that may become my cargun, with one 12 round mag in the gun, and the other in the mag holder.

I like the lockbox ideas...for being away from the car for a longer time...i could even squeeze my radar detector in there and some other valubles.

Ill start a new thred if I have to but:

Recommendations for cheap guns (Semi-auto or wheel) that you would fell comfortable leaving in the car-- when I think cheap I think sub $150

Git yurself one of them High Point 9mm bangers. List price is $155 and they is very popular in the 'hood. http://home.mindspring.com/%7Ejustsomeguy/icon_lol.gif

Oh, and since the warranty follows the gun, not the original owner, the nice, misunderstood child who steals it will have warranty coverage. Now that's a nice bonus. ;)

But, more seriously . . . the only time there is a gun in any of our cars is when it is on my person. Leaving lethal toys in your vehicle to be added to the general criminal arsenal is . . . well, criminally foolish.

When I'm in a vehicle my gun(s) are on me or in a cable locked box. However, sometimes I will shift the guns location on my self to facilitate access (i.e. with seat belt...) or for comfort.

I did see a U tube video where a guy took his gun out of his car console and placed it in a ramora holster that he wedged between his seat and the console, then he covered it with a hat. like my run on sentence?

Well you can mess with him but he's not long off the boat from the old country so mess with him and you just might get large packages in the mail or wake up next to them.

As a cost saving measure (even the mob is feeling the Obummer crunch) he's resorted to sending fish sometimes. Less postage, same effect.

Your probably right, don't mess with Jocko and be safe.

I think the center console is best. It's out of sight and can be quicker to access if someone trys to rob or carjack you while in the car. I think putting on the door panel is bad for several reasons. It is easier for someone to see when the door is opened and if you shut the door to hard the rig can fly off, holster and all.

I have no desire for a "truck gun". However there are times I must go into some place I can not carry and on those occasions I lock it in the glove box currently but I intend to get one of those lock boxes I can cable or chain to the auto.

That said I did buy a couple of holsters with the intent to modify them for auto usage. My intent was to make something similar to the Crossbreed OHAI.

http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/OhaiModular/tabid/100/List/0/ProductID/10/CategoryID/4/Level/1/Default.aspx?SortField=ProductName,ProductName

BUT I am seriously thinking I want an Andrews Custom Leather carjacker crossdraw.

That looks like a very accessible rig. In some states, it might not satisfy the requirement that your passenger not have access?

Just curious. Not an issue in Arizona any more, but at one time it was. That's one of the reasons my wife has an Arizona permit (CCW).

I used to be careless about where I kept a gun in the car and then my wife told me to keep it in my pants. I've been AIWB ever since. :)

I have mine locked in a second storage bin in my Sierra parked in a parking structure 200 miles away from my current location. This is the first time that I've done it, but I had to drive 200 miles to that location. I'll breath easier when I get back to my truck.

TUCSON,

That old law in Arizona was ridiculous about passenger access to your pistol. Anyway That Andrews Car Jacker is a good holster, I have two of them and also have several other holsters from Andrew. He is a great guy and makes a quality product. I have met and spoken with him at gun shows in tha past and he knows what he is doing whenit comes to leather working.

Most of the time, the gun I use for EDC (CM9) comes out of pocket and besides the emergency brake between the seats of my truck when I am driving. If I have to store it, I have a Nanovault cabled under my seat, but it is rare that I ever do that. Sometimes I carry the G30 in the truck if I feel like I need a little more than the 9mm.

Do most of you feel uncomfortable while driving carrying your guns in their usual place or is it an access thing due to seat belts etc.

I don't do anything different even on long trips. Mostly curious.

I do drive a van so it's more like sitting in a chair, not tucked in like a bucket seat. That might help.

Course even when I'm not driving, I'm still sitting so maybe I'm just immune to it?

Bawanna, I am left handed, which works out well regarding the shoulder belt when I'm driving. I can lean forward and draw from on or behind the hip. Or, I can draw effortlessly from a holster at the left handed AIWB position. I came up with detailed specs that James Dean artfully put into fine Herman Oak leather for my J-frame: low riding, reverse canted, smooth back with most of the molding on the front, offset tuckable clip attached to a rounded edge intended to enhance comfort. Great design, IMHO, and masterful execution by James! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: I have high hopes that it will be delivered to me today. Have a look at this beauty! :D:D:D

To answer the OP's question, here's my input:

1) Glock 19 or Kahr CM9.

2) Carried in a holster either OWB or IWB.

3) See 2).

I feel more comfortable inside my car when Im in the hood than outside, so its not a huge deal...but usually I dont carry one in the tube (which I understand could be bad for my health) so the concept in my head seems tough if I need it quickly. Sweep seatbelt, lift shirt, draw firearm, load chamber, get on target-ALL WHILE depressing clutch, finding first gear (with the same draw hand ) and tryin to get the hell outta Dodge with me and all of my passengers intact and uninjured. Id rather just have one nearby, I always know is loaded. If somebody breaks into my truck, a $150 gun is the least of my worries electronics-wise. But thats just me

when in Indiana, I really don't care where I carryt my gun, I am legal to do so , normally it is in my pocekt and I know not the best palce when driving but again I only do that with short runs, any 50 mile or above thegun is where I can get to it fast but still be unnoticed if a cop sticks his head inside the car. I don['t get to ramobooish over it.

When my car was broken into last year, the thief checked my glovebox and center console for goodies to rip off (in addition to grabbing my laptop bag from the back seat, which was the only thing that was stolen, despite the jar of change that was in the center console).

So, center console maybe not such a good plan if you're going to leave it in the car.

Many cars have pockets on the back of the seats. Maybe in the passenger seat rear pocket would be a good place. It's still accessible from the driver seat. Obviously no good if you have kids in the back seat.

There are a variety of cheapo guns to choose from. The Kel-Tec PF-9 makes a good "don't give a crap if it gets stolen" gun. Obviously you'd want to report it stolen right away, but you wouldn't shed a tear for it.

Would you shed a tear for the victim of your misused stolen gun? Something to think about.

I would feel sorry for any victim of a violent crime no matter what was used.

If someone broke into your car and stole your tire iron and clubbed someone with it, would you feel that you had somehow shared the perpetrator's responsibility?

Funny how some people have to have it both ways. "Guns don't kill people, people do." - but then "You're a bad person if someone illegally obtains your gun and does bad things with it."

It depends I suppose.

IF I am carrying a handgun in my pocket it aint about comfort but more about access since the seatbelt more or less locks the pocket up. Then I might drag it out and put it in the pocket on the door. (I would rather be able to grab the carjacker rig out of the glovebox and put it on then slide the handgun into it, or grab the Ohai rig and slap it on the velcro then slide the handgun out of my pocket and into the Ohai).

Sometimes I don't worry about it as the son has his handgun in his holster and is more able to handle any gun play issue while I do my best to drive out of any trouble. Then at times the wife has her handgun in her purse and is hopefully ready to handle any gun play issue while I do the driving. Even better when both the wife and son are in the car..

Then there are times when I go out alone without a handgun... I generally feel kinda naked on those occasions.
