About two weeks ago I put a new PM9 on layaway. I recently found this forum and joined. The fit and finish and size were big selling points. Appears to be a quality weapon. After reading all the problem posts and the recommendations for prep I am getting concerned. Is this that finicky of a pistol?

I think you'll love your pm9, i know I do mine. Make sure to do the prep, it will help you the first outing. LOTS of happy pm9 owners here.

The short answer is no, it is not that finicky. It most likely would run just fine out of the box. The prep thread is good stuff for any new auto and they are recommendations. They certainly won't hurt a thing and most likely will simply insure a more positive first range trip.
Good way to get to know your new gun as well, you'll be well bonded before you get to the range.

NOTHING MORE. buy it take it out of the box if that is what floats ur boat and shoot it like u stoleit. 99% of the time It willgo bang with no issues, again the prep osts is basicalyw hat Bawanna stated. It gets u accustomed to your gun bofere the first BANG. IMO ur reading way way to much into some of the posts..

I don't have experience with the polymer guns.
But my MK40 did require a break in period before full reliability was achieved.
Some guns, like Kahr and Kimber, are made with tight tolerances.
But the price you pay for a break in period is rewarded with above average accuracy.
A small investment well worth making.

I took mine straight from the counter to the range in the back of the LGS and ran 200 rounds of American Eagle ball followed by 50 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense without a single problem. Gun ran flawless. Replaced the stock sights with XS Big Dots and love it even more. Approx 700 rounds down range with no problems to date. I did give it a good clean and lube after the initial range session and clean it every time I shoot it.

I thank all the responders for your replies. I am a longtime revolver guy who started buying pistols last August after handling a S&W M&P 45 and realizing I had to have it. It and my Jericho 941 are now my favorites. The Kahr is replacing a Kel tec PF-9 that I was not satisfied with......I do always throughly clean and lube new firearms prior to testing. Just have not did the fluff and buff process.

You'll do just fine, lots of help around here if you need it too.
Alabama? Your the folks that named your state after that band right?
Good band. Don't listen much being audio challenged but used to love em. Not in any mano mano way you understand.

Bawanna...I always thought the song "Sweet Home Alabama" said it all.
Jocko........Is that the original barrel? 32,000 rounds is impressive.

The PM9 is a solid, dependable gun. Remember, this is the official Kahr forum, so a good percentage of problems get posted here. Not really much with the PM9. Been on the market for years. All the bugs were worked out of this model years ago. And did you notice jocko's signature? More than 32,000 rounds through his PM9 and he carries it every day.

I've heard that too. If I ever relocate back to my roots in Missouri, I might have to visit Alabama to see if it's true.
Never know I might run into Forrest Gump in person. Swell fella that one.

My PM9 was utter trash when I first got it. It failed to return to battery every other shot. Then I realized I should have "prepped" it. I took it home, cleaned / lubed, and tried again. Thousands of rounds later it has not failed on me once. It's an accurate little sucker thats fun to shoot and perfect to carry. You made the right choice.
If you get a few failures in the first hundred or two rounds, dont panic, thats normal. Put a couple hundred through it, then evaluate after that. Welcome!

Consider me reassured now. As was said: I do tend to read too much into things sometimes. I was just concerned that I had made a $639 mistake. I have absorbed all the positive comments and will now trust my original judgement that caused me to put my money down. Thanks all......Warbird1

Good call, Warbird1. You might be surprised how many of us did the same thing: ordered a Kahr and then got on Kahrtalk and kinda freaked a bit. :o Many of us are now owners of multiple Kahrs. Join the club! :D

I bought my PM9 new in Aug of 09. It shot very dependable right out of the box. It was well oiled and I did not prep it. I have over 500 rounds thru it and not one failure. The PM9 is an awesome gun. Just as dependable as the K9. Good Luck with your new Kahr.

Don't know that you need any more encouragement but I also had some concerns about buying my pm9 after reading about the "issues" some people had.. but decided to get one anyway. Bought mine in January, and now I'm only 31,000 rounds behind Jocko and NO problems. You are going to love this gun!! :)

Dont forget the addition of a Hogue Jr grip sleeve for your PM9.....perfect fit and feel.
You made an excellent choice in the PM9.
When you pick your pistol up, wipe it down, mine was quite "wet" with the packing oil (?) that Kahr puts on their pistols.
Familiarize yourself with how to remove the slide from the frame, it ain't hard if you've been around other guns for awhile.
Run a patch wet with your choice of lube thru the barrel, lube the rails with a good lube of your choice. I like TW-25b white grease for the rails and FP-10 for all else.
Take it to the range and shoot it. ;)
Just that simple. It will run for you.
That's basically what I did with my PM9 and it ran 100% the first day for 425 rds. :D Except for two split mags!!!
Don't waste your time working..."racking"... the slide 500 times!

Go to the PM9 page at Kahr, look below the picture, select the Downloads tab and play/save the Takedown video. Pay special attention to how to put the slide stop back in when reassembling.
