View Full Version : Have P45, thinking of adding CM9
I am very happy with my fully dependable and good shooting P45. The CM9, however, is very tempting for the price and size. Given that, for several reasons, I need to carry a small pistol, is the 4.5 oz savings in weight really noticeable or significant (P45 is 18.5 oz, CM9 is 14 oz)? I plan to keep the P45 regardless, but just trying to decide if the weight savings is worth putting out the $$ for the CM9.
I definitely noticed the weight difference between an MK9 that I had (24 oz) that felt like a brick and the P45, bigger but lighter.
Thanks,
Ron

There is a way obvious size difference as well, the CM9 will lend itself to pocket carry, where the P45 not so much.

Thank you, jlottmc. That is very helpful.

I have a PM9 and it runs great, but if I had it to do over again I think I would get a PM or CM 40 [with a manual safety :D] instead. It's about the same size and weight but with a more potent cartridge. As jlottmc said, the CM9 or 40 gives you the option of a pocket carry, and yes, the weight difference is significant.
I also have a MK40 which is a great shooter, but I agree, it's too heavy. Although it's small, it's weight eliminates a pocket carry except in a heavy weight jacket.

Though more comfortable due to reduced weight and size, I feel my cm9 is still a ITWB or OTWB carry. It's 20 oz loaded and can weigh down most trouser pockets. (maybe okay with cargo pants) Now a P3AT (11 oz loaded) will disappear in your pocket. An M&P 342 (16 oz loaded) would be the max weight I would carry in the pocket.

I wish I had legit reasons to justify buying a new gun. I keep having to make them up. After selling most of what I had I got sad :( looking at all the emtpy space in my safe.

When I'm not carrying my P9 IWB in the spring and fall, my summer carry is either a P3At or, more recently, a DB380 in a deSantis Nemisis pocket "holster" in the cargo pocket of my shorts (or IWB as suits my fancy). I'm always aware I have my P9 (or J frame) when I'm carrying it. The 380s, as Tejano stated above, literally disappear. It would be no different with the P380 I imagine. I had a PM9 for a bit, but i just didn't like the ergonomics. If I were in the market for a micro 9, the Kimber Solo has outstanding ergonomics according to my meat hooks.
I have an S&W Bodyguard 380, and it does just disappear in a pocket. However, although I know rationally that it would be just fine in a crisis, I still have a nagging lack of confidence in the 380 round.
I should add that I had a PM9 at one time, but sold it in an impetuous desire for another gun. So, I still have several mags that I think will fit the CM9.

Compatible mags is always a good reason to get a cm9. You can get them easily for under $400 shipped, They ride comfortably on the hip and along with a 380 in your pocket you can proceed to your destination with confidence.

Too bad you want to keep the P45, I have a black PM9 that shoots perfect I might trade for the 45. It's a great carry gun but I keep hearing this little voice saying "get a 45".

I don't really look at a 9mm as a pocket carry pistol. Even my LC9 is just a little too big to really carry in a front pocket. It's too easy to see poking out. If your keeping it in a cargo pocket that would be different. I'm going the opposite of you. I started with the LCP for pocket carry and the LC9 for IWB cary. I just bought a CW45 and am carrying it IWB in a PJ Kydex holster. It fits really nice at 4oclock.
I carry my P45 in a chest belt holster as I find it uncomfortable to carry on my waist. I have tried a ComTac Minotaur and several other holsters, but returned to the chest band carry.
The P45 has night sights and integrated laser and is quite the complete shooter.
I hear little voices, too, saying "get the CM9, get the cm9".

Ron, where exactly do you carry your P45? (??:?? O'clock, how high)
It sits just in front of my underarm, about midway down the ribcage. The grip points mostly forward, so it is easy to reach into the shirt to grab the gun. I bought it from Active Pro Gear. It is a wide elastic band with an adjustable shoulder strap on the side that has the holster-pouch. It is worn under a shirt, so it limits speed of access somewhat. It is VERY comfortable for me.

I have something similar, but it is a tight fitting sleeveless T-shirt. The only thing I don't like about it is the gun sits too far under my underarm, making it kind of hard to reach. It would work better for someone who is thinner or has longer arms. :o
My thoughts on speed of access is to wear a western style shirt with snaps instead of buttons. You can instantly "rip" several snaps open to go for your gun, and it does no damage to the shirt or the snaps.
I am thinking about using a breathable belly band holster to ideally position a gun on my upper body for carry under a western shirt.
