I want to know what all the fine ladies and gentleman in the KahrTalk world keep by their bed at night for defense. Pistol? Pistol with night sights? Pistol with a light? Something bigger? Shotgun? Carbine? Let me know. Pics are always welcome!

On my side, kahr cm9, spare mag, flash light, and cell phone. On gfs side "our" p6 and spare mag. I guess technically the gamemaster .308 sits behind the headboard in storage but if things get real crazy one night.... who knows! :D

I have been thinking of holstering my CW9 to the bed rail, but I am just more used to the Beretta (for now). I'm sure it will eventually be displaced.

Hey buddy, I'm gonna get some shut-eye while you lay there and meet your maker. Then I'll make a call in the morning to the carpet cleaners. LOL!
That is too funny, but I don't blame you! I'm sure it will be a major pain if that day ever comes.

Well the BG should have thought of that before he broke into his house. :) "Mr BG, I have a gun, shovel, and a map to the high desert, f*** you." :D
My go to bump in the night gun is a Glock 19 with a Streamlight light/laser combo, with a Mossberg 500 available if need be.

Big ol' mean junkyard type mutt, German Shepard, Beretta 70, Rem 870 Police Magnum with #4 buckshot and 3 D cell maglight in the bedroom. SA 1911, Browning Buckmark, K40, Marlin .30-30, Heritage .22lr scattered throughout the house. May end up putting the K40 on my side of the bed and loading up another firearm to take its place in the house.
I guess I could load up all of my firearms but then my gun cabinets would be empty...lol

I choose the Glock over the Kahr for home solely on capacity, nothing else. The Kahr tends to get out of the house more though.

Since it's just the two of us in the house we keep the bedroom door open and just above the door (outside of the bedroom) pointing down the hall we have a very bright motion detector light. We like it when our TARGET is lit up like a Christmas tree.

I keep the days carry gun, a good led flashlight, my two reloads, and a pair of cell phones (one for land line like use only). My wife has her CW45, and a reload. Then I get into my closet which is actually closer to the wife's side of the bed. If I'm still shooting when I get to that, standby, the unloading process will take some time. If they are still there when I need to start reloading magazines, my ass is running, and fast, even though I have the ability to load magazines several more times. I keep all my pistols loaded, and the majority of my long guns right now. When I decide not to keep the long guns loaded again, I'll still have the pump shotgun loaded, and the pistols.

I have an AR "firearm" in a bracket. Essentially a pistol length AR (taking advantage of the ATFs various rulings on buffer tube wraps, etc. to make it more comfortable to shoot). Mags are loaded with V-Max tipped ammo. Pistol ready to hand off to the Mrs. if need be. Either my carry Kahr or a Glock.

I'm usually napping in my TV recliner so I have my trusty K9 with Night Sights(re-lamped 2010), and CTLaser Grips, loaded with 8+1 Speer 124-gr +P Gold Dots(or Double Tap +P with 124-gr Gold Dots) and two 8-round extended mags for reloads... along with a tactical light.
IF I'm in bed, I have my XD45 Tactical (5" barrel) with Trijicon HD NS, loaded with 13+1 230-gr Speer Gold Dots and a 13-round reload, along with a tactical light. Wifey has her H&R 929 9-shot revolver with 9 Stingers in it. And, next to my side of the bed is the Charles Daly SA Tactical 12-ga with 5 rounds of 00 in the mag, chamber empty, safety off... just got to pull the bolt back and let it go. There's a 30-round bandoleer of 00 Buck nearby and some really high powered slugs as well.

I have night lights throughout my house except in the master bedroom. These are mostly for the cat to navigate at night, but they work well for me too. If I'm in the bedroom or at the door into the hall, I'm not illuminated, but anyone else in the house will be.
I reach for my Sig P226-9 loaded with Gold Dot 124+P which sleeps on my nightstand.

Hey! I have night lights all over the house... and I have those motion-activated LED lights that come on as well... then there are the "Night LIGHTS" on the pistols that really show up in the dark, too.
I want to have at least one gun within reach wherever I'm at... and I usually have my P380 on as well. Speaking of which... I need to go shave and then get to the range with Wifey's new P380. She'll be home from work before I return as it is!

Glasses first, cell phone into the PJ pocket Tac light in the left and a Rossi 38 J frame with a three inch barrel in the right. Like has been said it's just the two of us anymore so I don't have to go but to the bedroom door frame. Once the wife is awake enough, she will start riding shotgun... as in 11-87. I sit here next to five flats of 12gage trap loads. Yeah, it's birdshot, but it's ALOT of birdshot.
Now that said, the last time I acutally had a noise make me jump up at 2:30am I reached into the hidey hole and my hand drifted instead to my pocket carry P380 and it's trijicons. Turned out my issue was a neighbors kid, drunk and his two plastered buddys trying to unload a couch from a pick-up at the end of my driveway. Noisy and annoying, but harmless. Guess I showed I prefer night sights for my house gun...

My pistols lie on towels in a nightstand drawer that I can reach while still laying on my bed. I'd go for my J-frame first because of it's pointability. If 5 rounds of 38 spl don't do it, I have 2 NY reloads by grabbing my CM9 and my TCP, plus extra loaded mags for both.
I am thinking seriously, though, about getting a home defense shotgun. I am looking at this Weatherby (http://www.weatherby.com/product/shotguns/semiauto_tr/sa459_tr) in 20 guage.

The subject of this thread presents me with a dilemma that I haven't been able to solve. As most of you know I have had two burglaries over the last year and a half in which 15 hand guns were stolen. In both cases the guns were replaced in fairly short order where possible. That's the source of the dilemma. I have a gun safe that weighs about 1000 pounds and is bolted to a concrete floor. That baby ain't going anywhere, and it contains jewelry, house deeds, vehicle titles, a laptop, cash, other important papers, and, of course, guns. The house also has a high-tech wireless security system and motion sensors with floodlights outside.
The problem is that the weapons in the safe are not readily available for home defense use. Therefore, the HD guns, no matter how well hidden, are not protected. Ideally, a HD gun should be one or more, three in my case, of the best shooters I have, but in most cases these are the most valuable and the ones I don't want to lose [again]. Right now I have an HK USP 40 with n/s, an excellent pistol but since I bought it used, not a lot invested; an LCP, not a favorite caliber and a gift; and the CW40, somewhat redundant since I got the CW45, out of the safe for defense. They are well hidden but accessible, but so were some that were stolen. I don't really want three small safes, because they are not always that accessible either, and may be subject to being stolen themselves.

I share that dilemma. I never put my carry guns in the safe since they always go with me but I do have a night stand gun that I generally leave out.
My biggest drop my guard is whittling grips in my man cave and rather than put the models in the safe every trip I leave them on the bench, usually under a rag which isn't much security.
I tend to do the same with whatever long gun I happen to be giving special treatment at the time.
For a long time I tried to lock up based on value, monetary or sentimental, that didn't work too good either. The ones I want to fondle the most are locked up so they get left out.
I don't know what the answer is rather than make the whole man cave a big vault. Course after the boating accident everything is irrelevant anyhow I guess. Sad day.................

I tried this after the first burglary. I put a reinforced door and door frame on the room. Unfortunately the BG's just broke through an adjacent wall when they encountered the locked door. After that I bought the safe, and installed the new security system. The stolen property was about $7500 and the damage to the house was $6000.

I decided to buy a safe when the value of my guns exceeded the cost of a decent safe. That didn't take too long. Since I have sold off most of the guns I had I keep my 2 remaining pistols in a small 2 gun safe bolted through the floor. I guess if a thief wanted it bad enough they could take it, but hopefully the work to unbolt it would be a deterrent. Since I have a 4yr old I don't have the option of not keeping my guns locked up when they aren't on me.

Buddy of mine actually had his foundation poured so that he had an offshoot, probably 8x10 but one end of the 8 foot side came in probably 2.5-3 feet on each side and he had a steel door manufactured and dropped in place. Basically an 8x10 safe built into the concrete on one end of his basement. Only way in that wasn't concrete or steel would have been to go thru the upstairs floor...
And oh yea, it was packed w/ guns.

I have my Rossi .38 as my HD gun for much the same reason. The guns in the safe, bolted to the concrete are more valuable and maybe slightly better shooters. The little Rossi though is a real utility firearm. I keep it loaded with Hornady standard pressure 38 specials with 125 gr XTPs. These are practical for the house (Frame, built in 1947) and with some prudence should stay inside my walls if things went bad someday.
The little gun also works other ways for me. This being Texas, I keep it loaded with 2 CCI 100gr shotshells for the odd visit from Mr Dimondback or the more common visit from Mr. Copperhead to my city yard. The gun stays loaded this way from the end of April to the middle of June when the heat makes the issue lessen. A Safariland Comp1 speedloader sits with the gun in the hidey holding the alt loading at all times during the year.
The Rossi is cheap, but reliable with good utilty for two or four legged problems and also those that slither on their belly. If I lost it I would be very upset but it's not an heirloom. I also have practiced with the little revolver in night shoot situaitions as the local range guy will let me turn out most of the lights and shoot by Tac flashlight when I'm on the indoor range alone. Revolvers just go bang, no tap & rack or stovepipes and all I need to do is hold the line till the wife opens the safe and the shotgun comes into play. If I was home alone I feel I can handel all my needs with the hideout HD gun till the cops arrive.

Here's what I suggest two things 1) home carry, take which ever roscoe you decide to carry and carry it around the house, sort of a sun up to sun down thing 2) open the safe when you're home and close it when you leave. This allows you access to your rods, but in a less convenient location. The home carry would then allow you to fight to the rest of them.

O'Dell, here is my solution to your dilemma....
Surefire light is only there to make sure I shoot the BG and not a dog. 350 pounds of rescue dogs is an effective deterrent to just about anything. Heck, the Postman won't even come onto the front porch to drop off a package because he's afraid one of 'em will jump through a closed window and get him, just leaves a note in the mailbox saying we weren't home and to come to Post Office to pick up a package.
Really don't want a dog.

Good advise here. I carry around the house, have a gun on or near me when I am watching TV or using the computer. You never know when a BG could strike, owning all the guns in the world is not going to do you any good if you don't have one ready to go and within reach when a bad thing happens.
Also keeping the gun safe open when your home is a good idea to have quicker access to the bigger bang sticks.

My wife's 2 black poodles provide an excellent night time defense at my house. Even though they are as dumb as the rocks out back, and they never bark except when you don't want them to, you can't see them in the dark, and they are always right under your feet at all times.
Thus any BG's that might enter my house at night will certainly trip over them and injure themselves severely. Then the dogs will finally start their annoying barking, which I am confident will drive the BG's away.
I keep thinking of other useful things for the poodles to do. I'd like to strap targets on them and let them run around so I can practice aiming at moving targets. For some reason, my wife is not as keen on that idea as I am.

Two of the five were deported, or are about to be. One to Eastern Europe and one to Columbia, so they won't be a problem. Since we had three break ins in six months after none in the previous nine years, the police are targeting the area and their presence is noticeable. They even stop by the house every so often to let me know what's happening. One pulled me over the other day leaving the SD to talk about the Corvette. [He told me to write myself a ticket every time I left the garage and mail it to him]
Since the second burglary, I've added the safe, a tamper-proof security system, and outdoor lights, although all three were in the afternoon. Several of my neighbors have also ungraded security. [I'm sure the SD shows up on satellite passes] The gatehouse is now manned 24/7. The only trouble in the last year and three months is someone cut some chairs in the pool area, probably neighborhood kids. I was paranoid for a while, but I've gotten over it.

I hope they are deported, but don't hold your breath waiting for it. (Some Feds would really have to screw up big time for someone actually to be deported.) In Texas, the Feds that take deportees to the border don't even make it back to their offices before the newly deported are back across the border with new fake names, drivers licenses, and SS cards. Of course, that's assuming that the Feds actually take them to the border and don't just take them around the corner and let them loose. Too bad about all the stolen guns - that would really upset me.

Plus my Blue Heeler pup that barks up a storm at anything unusual.

Something went bump in the night, my dog went crazy about 5 in the morning. I grabed the Beretta and investigated, but it was probably a raccoon or 'possum.

At the foot of the bed is a yellow lab and a lab border collie mix (that I am not sure ever sleeps). Next to the bed is a Mossy 500 with buckshot and in the bedside table a S&W Sigma SW9VE. Of course they need to get by the big boa in the living room before they get to the bedroom.

Rat terrier who's worthless (but loud) to sound the alarm and CZ 75C to deter any malicious "bumps."

That boa and I are already cross ways. If I broke into a house and saw one of them, you'd hear a school girl scream, followed by me either running, or unloading whatever I have. I just don't do snakes.

My point exactly. Actually Dixie is very gentle and has never shot anyone; or bit anyone for that matter. I have had her since she was two days old and she is currently over twenty years old. However, she is imposing and being in the livingroom every service person who comes into the house sees her -- word gets around. She may be the best insurance policy I could have.
