View Full Version : Lead ammo only
There are no public ranges in SE CT where I'm stuck with several new
guns and no place to shoot em
All of the local clubs have long waiting lists except one with an indoor range that only allows lead ammo.
Now I'm used to using lead RN in my revolvers, but they were built to use them.
1) Any recommendations for 9mm/ .45ACP ,non-remanufactured if I can get 'em. ( and where CAN I get them!) I have no interest in reloading.
2) Any precautions to keep my semi-autos clean of deposits?
This may be the only game in town unless the Navy opens their new zillion dollar range at SUBASE NL to retirees. On the other hand they stock pheasant and trout on their land west of here and have an active skeet and tray club... so who knows.
Thanks

Do they really mean lead only -- as in non-plated and non-copper jacketed???
Perhaps what they REALLY mean is no steel core ammo. This is a common rule to keep armor piercing ammo from destroying the bullet collection backstops.

I doubt if they mean no jacketed bullets, I've never heard of a range like that. Like dkmatthews says, I bet they are just trying to keep out steel core bullets, those can tear up a range pretty bad.

I sez 'em the way I reads 'em:
FIREARM RANGES
1. Only .22 short, long or long rifle caliber rimfire rifles may be shot on the indoor range.
2. PROHIBITED FIREARMS: Magnum .22 and .17 caliber rifles and pistols are prohibited (the cartridges are loaded with jacketed bullets which damage the backstop). ABSOLUTELY NO CENTERFIRE RIFLES ARE ALLOWED TO BE SHOT AT ANY TIME ON THE INDOOR RANGE.
3. All calibers of pistols or revolver are permitted on the indoor range; however ONLY LEAD BULLETS ARE ALLOWED. No jacketed or half jacketed or semi-jacketed bullets allowed.
Small range, open 24/7 365. Wants to prevent idiots from destroying the backstops. Probably overkill but there's always some fool who ruins the party for all.. i.e, "just this one shot through my BFG 9000 won't hurt a thing...."
Hope this is of help.

Thanks, hadn't heard of Graf's before. The 9mm seems a bit pricey for re-manufactured stuff, the .45 not so much.

Better make sure your bbl can handle straight lead (glock and Kahr's with the polygonaly rifled bbls it is a no no) , and that the loads that will tend to be a little lacking in velocity if they are loaded correctly to prevent fouling. You will also need to clean the bullet lube more than normal, again if the ammo is loaded right. Most indoor ranges don't like lead, because it is hell on the air handling system, and the EPA required filters are expensive. I would find another place if you could. There will be a ton of aerosolized lead there.

Dang... I believe you but do you have a source for this info?

Glock too. Search the archives, we had a pretty lively discussion on this not terribly long ago. The CW is ok, but the poly rifled barrels are not so much. It'll shoot ok, but the lead tends to build up and bad things can happen. I think the general consensus was that a couple would likely be ok, but a steady diet was trouble. Bawanna said it well 1000 may be ok but 1001 not so much. Just never know what the failure point is though. There was also a discussion on it at glock talk (I don't go there but I think there was a link in the thread we had going).

Wow HDoc, never heard of a range with a policy like that. Many semi auto owner's manuals say not to fire non-jacketed bullets through them. I'd find another place to shoot if possible.

Yup, Yup.
Normally it's the steel core ammo that's the issue.
Lot's of folk on GlockTalk go to after market barrels for their Glocks
primarily to shoot lead.
I'd verify that's really what they mean and if so find another range.

Take a look at message #5.. direct from their range rule page.
Looks like I'm gonna be shooting a lot of my S&W 41 this summer.

MY Kahr manuals say that lead is ok just clean thoroughly and more often.. more or less.

You make that sound like a bad thing. I love my S&W 41 immensely. Even when I have a bad day it doesn't.
I'm suffering range woes myself. I got a couple different places I intend to reconoiter first chance I get. Sad I paid for a membership and it's so busy with class's and stuff that I can't get in to shoot. Never a problem until I joined.
I might move down and become Greg's neighbor, just has to be lots of places to shoot in the desert. Right? Not sure I can handle the heat though after being in Washington. Probably kill the moss and mildew all over me though right quick.

That's a fantastic article. Thanks.
But DANG....
All but the lead only sporting club has a waiting list. Too many shooters out there and a not friendly gun state. Honestly, if I had some business sense
and a million bucks I'd open a range myself. North of me Hoffman's charges $25/hour and you must buy their ammo. I understand it's busy all the time.
West of me (an hour drive) in Guilford it's $35!! an hour.
On top of that my Sig 220R stainless two tone is 9 weeks into the order
with no defined delivery date.
I'm going to have a beer and weep.
