View Full Version : Which Night Sight better in daylight?
Sgt01

I currently have the Trijicon front night sight on my CW9, and for my old eyes the sight seems sort of lacking during daylight hours.
I've read on a few other posts that some members were of the opinion that the Dawson Precision night sights were "easier to see". Are the Dawson's easier to see in daylight or dim light?
If easier to see in daylight, I may have to switch over.
Opinions? Preferences?
Many thanks!

Which Night Sight better in daylight?
Though I don't own them...my guess...TruGlo TFO's.

Is TruGlo making a drop-in TFO front sight for the CW9? If so, that would be the way to go!
Doesn’t look like it...found this though.

Only thing I don't like is it looks plastic and cheap
I agree, I’m not seeing anything that won’t require gunsmithing though.

I would wait for XS big dots. They are making/testing a no mod set for the C series Kahrs.
I have these on my G26 and really like them. They work great day and night!

XS Systems 24/7 Express sights are specifically designed to
work well in all light conditions (hence the 24/7 name).
They come in standard or Big Dots.
I prefer the Big Dots for close quarters combat.

I'd like to know what it is made of. If it is not sturdy metal, I don't want it, because with those sharp corners it is going to catch on something and break into pieces.

This could be a great thread. Daylight visibility is very important. My Trijicons or Mepro NS are not so good for daylight aiming. That's the reason I really want the Trijicon HD NS. They are great anytime and have many additional features, but sadly, they are not available for Kahrs... and may never be.
I don't like the Low "V" of the XS sights and haven't tried the Big Dots. I do like the deeper and wider aperture of the HD night sights. This helped my "old" eyes immensely when shooting the 15-yard targets at the range I frequent. That's the the longest range there and it seems like what 100 yards used to look like when I was much younger!:D

I replaced the Ameriglo I-Dot Pro sights on my Glock EXO G27 with Big Dots
and like them much better.
The Ameriglo Pro front sight is virtually identical to the HD front sight.
Had Siglight three dot NS sights on my Sig Sauer P239.
Replaced the front sight with the red/orange Ameriglo Pro sight.
That was an improvement for sure.
But I'm getting some Big Dots for it tomorrow and they will be retired as well.
The Siglights on my P220 went dim.
It now runs Big Dots.
And both of my J-Frames have a Big Dot sight on the nose.
Guess you could say I'm a Big Dot man now - LOL!

To the O.P.
I don't know about the Dawsons but having had Kahrs since 1998 with one original set and two replacement sets of night sights, here's what I know.
Even though IMHO the ilumination was about equal, I preferred Tru Glow (or was it Mepro) over Trijicon front sights, because the white outline around the vial is protected by a transparent dome, whereas on the Trijicon the white outline is recessed into the sight with no protection, and it does wear out. We didn't care about the rears because we always used Novaks, which came with Trijicon vials.
However none lasted longer then about 6 yrs. before they dimmed.
So, since replacing the front sights is expensive, this time we went with Hi-Viz F.O. fronts and Novak rears on our 2 K9s and 2 PM9s. And haven't regretted it.
I realize that you have a CW9, so this is just to show you what to expect from F.O.

The big dots are great and I'm gonna put a set on my wife's G17. But we played with a set on a K9, drawing out of a full length holster without a sight track and there'd be dragging and fuzz on the front sight. Out of a holster that the sight stuck out of, like my Hume JIT it would hang up. IMHO, you'd have to really be selective on your choice of holsters.
I'd like to know what it is made of. If it is not sturdy metal, I don't want it, because with those sharp corners it is going to catch on something and break into pieces.
From what I was told, they are metal and made by Dawson

I think you have confused the Trijicons with something else. They ARE protected in several ways. And I had my 12+-year old K9 re-lamped at the factory... Trijicons only... for only $18 a lamp... $54 for the 3, including return shipping... couldn't be cheaper than sending in the slide USPS Priority for $7-8.

Tritium TFO's would be the cat's behind for the CW9/CM9/CW45/etc. Have them on a couple of guns, including a duty gun, and really like 'em. The tritium is OK (not great) for dim light, but during daylight firing they're fantastic.
Tried the XS Big Dots on a Glock 26 and S&W snub. Could never get used to them. They seemed fine for close-up work, but I found that accuracy started to suffer 15 yards and beyond. Maybe that was just me not being able to adjust to a different sight picture.
For now, it looks like my options are pretty limited.
I've read most, if not all of the posts on "Trijicon vs Dawson" night sights in the forum. I'm still not sure why someone would pick one brand over the other. Any opinions on why you picked one brand over the other? Functionality? Looks? Brighter tritium? Just because?
Just want to make sure I'm not missing something.
BTW, thanks for all the feedback.

I have to disagree. I knew this already but I had to verify. So I just got off the phone with the service dept.
You ship at your expense
Labor for front sight install is $40.00
Cost of just the front sight is $40.00, $80.00 for both (they may or may not discount that)
Return shipping to you is $25.00
As far as the recessed vials, this is what I'm talking about

I have used the Big Dots and liked them a lot for a fighting pistol. I have set of Ameriglos on my EDC G19, they are awesome. Easy to pick up in the day light or dark. I run the 2 dot shown but my son runs the 3 dot version. The tubes are made by Trijicon like almost every other night sight out. They are steel and seem durable. Have a straight leading edge on the rear sight for one hand slide manipulations.

I was wrong when I wrote it was made by Dawson. They are Williams, per Kahr service. However still metal

It helps a lot with picking up the sight quickly.
One of these days I’ll probably redo it in a brighter red or yellow.
XD with standard front NS (no NS on the Kahr) no white outline.
Burnt orange acrylic paint sealed with clear nail polish, both applied with a toothpick.

I just went to XS's web site and they now have a set for the CW45. It says gunsmithing required. I'm guessing that would be trimming to fit the rear sight slot and screwing the front sight in

I had my 12-year-old-plus Trijicon sights RE-LAMPED... NOT INSTALLED... completely different. Whatever they do is LIKE getting new sights... another 12-years service. AGAIN, I paid $7 to $8 for USPS Priority shipping for the slide to Trijicon. They re-lamped my Night Sights and returned my slide for a total cost of $54 on my credit card. So for about $62 total I got "NEW" NS... a bargain! Their bill said $18 a lamp... 3x18=54.

I have them on my Springfield EMP 9 and I can pick up on them quicker than anything I have used yet. Day or night. They are a godsend for the older eyes, witch I have:p I emailed them to see if some no gunsmithing sights were in the making for the cw45. I guess that my question has been answered! I will wait.

I misunderstood. I thought you meant re lamped to mean installed sights by Kahr. I didn't know what you did could be done. I don't think it would have worked for me. My trijicon rear sights were Novaks.

It wouldn't hurt to ask Trijicon. I don't know if the offer extends to their lamps used by other sight makers or not.

How about international orange? Red turns almost black in low light, yellow disappears in daylight, so the IO is just right.

I think the gunsmithing they are talking about is cutting a dovetail
for the regular front sight. XS will do that for you. I think the charge was like $75 for the machine work/sight install. Plus the sights and shipping.
From their site; (that's the dimensions for the dovetail cut)
Kahr 45 & 9mm or .40S&W with New Style Slide - Model CM or CW
*Requires Gunsmithing (.330" X 65° X .075" DP)
The last time someone posted info from them, they were projecting this summer for the non gunsmithing version to be released.

How about green? This paint is almost the same color as a F.O.site. People say that green draws your eye to it. So does yellow but it washes out.
I got this paint from a hobby shop. I top coated it with Hard as nails, nail polish
