I finally took my p40 i purchased used out for the first time since i bought it about a year ago. It is a older 12/2001 model.
First my accuracy was aweful,im talking lucky to hit the target aweful, lol. I will blame myself mostly for that since i haven't shot in several months. I hope it will improve if i get back into shooting more often again. It did improve some while i was shooting.
I first started with 180 fmj American Eagle 6 round mags. No issues.
I tried my 7 round mag it repeatedly jammed when chambering the first round about half way in. I had to bump the back of the slide to chamber the round. Did not do it with the 6 round mags.
I tried my 135 grain Federal HST walmart stuff. I had even more problems. It appeared to be hanging on the left side of the feed ramp as it enters the chamber. It also seemed to hitting the feed ramp lower on the 7 round mag compare to my 6 round mags.
The tip of the bullet was also barely bumping the slide release but not enough were it would move it. I had already shaved a tad off since i noticed it before i shot it. Before it would move the slide release. I'm not sure if this is causing any issues or not.
I rounded the edge of the feed ramp chamber area and polished it. I also noticed the 7 round mag was causing the rounds to hit lower on the feed ramp. I also slightly bent the feed lips on the mag upward. It no longer hits low on the feed ramp. It chambers fine now with the slide release and slingshot method. I hope it functions fine shooting it.
I also noticed another problem while i was working on these issues. If i load a round in the mag ride it forward slowly. As soon as the round pops up from the mag i hear a loud audible pop and then the round is jammed dead solid half way into the chamber it will not load if i hit the slide and will not eject. If it does try to eject it will lodge between the ejector and the top right corner of the barrel. It will however chamber a round fine if i use the release or sling shot method. Should I be concerned about this?
I also noticed my spent casings have dents were the opening is. Is this a ejector issue?
Im going to try and work these issues out but it may go bye bye. Id like to give it a chance first though.
