View Full Version : Any Scotch Drinkers on Board?
After having been a bourbon most of my life I have recently acquired a taste for scotch. I like it on the rocks but neat is good too. I've tried many brands but I really like Glenfiddich 15. Any of you folks have a favorite and how do you like it served?

Scotch is the only hard liquor I've never tried....I am a beer guy and every now and again I will have a Jack and coke but not often...I have always been afraid that if I ever tried Scotch I would fall in love with the stuff and become Johnny Knee Walker Red living under an overpass somewhere...
I hear our fearless leader Bawanna likes a taste once in a while though...

Never been a huge fan of the single malt scotch. Just a nice Tennessee sipping whisky for me, thanks.

I've drank a fair share of Tennessee whiskey in my day. I actually like Dickel better than Jack. I know to some that that's blasphemy.

Yup I enjoy a wee dram or two from time to time. I acquired the taste on the Glenfiddich. Hadn't drank it in many years and my wife's cousin brought a bottle when she visited last summer from Sweden. She didn't drink it but figured we might and we did. Didn't take long to reacquire the taste. I usually have to settle for Johnny Walker Red, cost more than gas and can't very often afford the good stuff.
My moms man friend a genuine Scotsman and a fine guy brought some at Easter, Dormin or Dorwin? Can't remember the exact name but it was good stuff, genuine from Scotland. Didn't ask what it cost, more than gas I'm sure.
I like it with ice and unlike Jesse Stone I don't drink the whole bottle in an evening although sometimes I want to.

Not really a Scotch drinker but tried some Dewars 18 year old that was pretty good.

You live on the right side of the tracks there Longitude and I for one want to be your neighbor. I'd no doubt have to take the wheels off my mobile for sure in your neighborhood.
I'm not jealous or nothing.

Glenlivet 30yo is wonderful stuff. Just can't afford the payments.

If the package stores around me stocked the 30YO stuff it'd 60YO before they sold it.

I agree it is very pricey, that is why I drink it in small quantities.

I like Macallan and think that Scotch gives me the best buzz of all drinks. For me, it is a happy buzz. The first time I had it was on the rocks with a lemon twist. That is probably not the true Scotch drinker's way, but I like my first one that way.
Above all, I love beer. I love how it tastes, smells and feels. I love beer.

For everyday drinking, Famous Grouse is pretty good. It's a blend of high-end single malts including Highland Park, Macallan and a few others.
If you like single malts but don't have $$$ to spend, I recommend McClellands's which is available in 4 styles, one for each of the major whisky regions. McClelland's is actually a bottling of better-known brands at bargain prices. For example, the Islay version of McClelland's is actually a young Bowmore, which is very nice. I buy this for about $20 for a 70 cl bottle.
I'm not a world expert on whisky, but I have visited many of the Scottish distilleries, including Highland Park, Talisker, Tobermory, Arran, Bowmore, many others, and my favourite, Springbank. I've just about finished my Springbank 21 which I got years ago for $60 but was £350 ($500!) at the distillery a few years ago. And some people think that gas is an expensive liquid !!!

Probably great stuff I am certain. We have a "Brit" friend who has introduced us to Balvenie Double Wood. At only 12 years old, it is probably cheaper than your favorites. But, it beats the green bottle off the Cutty Sark rotgut we thought was great stuff in college. :o
We drink less of it these days and remember it better.

Scotch was something I never aquired a taste for. My favorite whiskey was Old Wellers 107. I think Wellers is more of a midwest thing. I don't see it often in other states. I was in Denver once, and asked for a bottle, and the clerk looked around for quite awhile, then pulled out a dusty old bottle from behind some other brand. It was well aged...in the bottle.

The mid-West makes a formidable rye whiskey: Templeton. I think it's from Iowa.

My friend from Mississipi has some good stories about running 'shine. back in the 70's. He'd deliver the shine, then come back and the guy would hand him an envelope with money in it. He took it and left and counted it later, it was always a different amount, but he didn't even look in the envelope until he was well away from they guy. He says the guy that with the still kept a jug by the door, and standard procedure was to walk in, take a big gulp out of the jug, enough to make a big bubble float to the top, and then find a place to sit down before it hit you. It was a big insult to the guy if you didn't hit the jug. And you damn sure didn't want to insult this guy.

The best moonshine in the world comes from Transylvania County in Western North Carolina. Reason being that someone stole a very expensive stainless steel distillery from the DuPont plant there many decades ago. I sampled some of that moonshine at my brother's wedding reception because his bride had relatives from Transylvania County. This stuff was the polar opposite of the nasty rotgut stuff that usually passes for moonshine. It was so pure that sipping it was like pure water in your mouth. Then, when you swallowed, a warm sensation started at the top of your esophagus and moved slowly down. There was no bite, no nasty taste or aftertaste. Just ultra pure alcohol and probably way over 200 proof. The most incredible strait liquor that I ever imbibed! :D

Better than 100% pure alcohol, huh? :D
You do realize that 200 proof is 100 % alcohol, right?

"Proofing" has an interesting history, I guess they used to pour some whiskey on black powder, and when touched with a match, if the powder burned, then the whiskey was "proved". Or something along those lines. This was back around the 16th or 17th century or so.

I like your formula better anyway. It would allow me to drink more before driving home, right?

I like Scotch and have had many different kinds of single malts and a few blends. I like so many but you should try Glen Kinchie and for relatively inexpensive Scotch Dewer's Blue is good.

JW Gold on the rocks if I'm buyin it. Blue if someone else is paying. Interestingly, I've been a scotch drinker that recently strays back over the tracks to bourbon.
