Snopes says this is true:

Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!!

If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some of your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.

Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc. Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!!

No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc. Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this.

Thanks for the warning/info, but one thing to keep in mind is that this is not something new; here's a news story from 20 years ago:

We had some kids in the troop make an explosive device with an MRE heater, plastic water bottle and water.
Mumsy and Daddy got a call to come get the little cherubs. Precocious little tykes.

Yes Dmitri, Snopes also commented that it has been going on for years.

There's a lesson there it seems like. Wonder if any one will get it.

When I was in my late teens, I was trimming the hedge beside my parents' driveway when I noticed an open beer bottle sitting at an angle on the ground in the hedge with 2" or so of liquid (beer?) in it. Probably left there by my friend, Larry, who was a bit of a hotrod and didn't want to get caught with an open container. I picked it up and curiously took a whiff. I almost passed out! :faint2: I dropped the bottle and the spilled liquid made the whole area uninhabitable! :puke:

Seems like a good reason to keep an air rifle handy. Spot any litter in your yard? Light it up, first.

Air rifle? I was thinking 416 Rigby but I've always been known for overkill.

Hey! City folks probably can't get away with discharging a firearm within the city, Bawanna!

I used to make that kind of stuff and more when I was a kid. Worst part was, it was my old man showing me how. The Draino bomb works off the Muriatic (Hydrochloric) acid in there. That component is readily available, and cheaper too anywhere. Thing about those, the reaction happens regardless of shaking, the reaction produces Hydrogen gas, which swells and bursts a sealed bottle. Shaking just makes it happen faster, because it increases the surface area. From a 20oz coke bottle, thing sounds like a 12ga. Don't ask about the three liter coke bottle that swole up to the size of a watermelon. Bottom line, don't do this.

Well meaning warnings usually turn into internet how-tos.
Lets see... fully auto 9mm Parker pen, with GPS and silencer...
