I need some input folks... I have a buddy that wants to sell his Kimber Pro Crimson Carry II. He said he'd take $800 for it. What do you think, should I do it? Is it a good deal or should I pass on it? I've looked it over and it seems to be in good shape, however, I've not fired it or taken it down to look at the internals. Is there anything that I need to be looking for...any help would be appreciated.
Edited to add: Forgot to mention that it has night sights on it along with the CT laser and I have no idea why someone would need both, but there on it. I have no idea who the mfg is because there were no visible markings on them. I don't have the option to take it out and shoot it because he's in a bind and wanted the deal done by noon tomorrow, so I'm kind of shooting blind on this one, so to speak.

Make sure it feeds well with the included magazines. Kimber's standard mags are substandard. I had to buy some KimPro Tech mags for my UC II before it would function properly. The standard mags wouldn't work in my SIG or STI either, although they worked perfectly otherwise. The KimPro's are pretty good.

I know nothing about 1911s
But if your buddy will let you hit the range with the gun
and a box of your favorite Self Defense 230 gr HPs?
That experience should tell you all you need to know.
I personally like Winchester Ranger T-Series 230 gr in .45

I read the OP carefully and extracted these what I consider key words.
Buddy, Kimber, 1911(not specifically stated but obviously implied) and 800 bucks.
The price is decent if it looks at all decent and is not abused.
Kimber is a name brand that is not gonna disappear anytime soon (I hope) with a good track record.
If it's something that you like and want I'd move forward without fear.
As Barth mentioned a range trip sounds feasible. It should eat anything it's fed.
I personally would not be concerned with the mags at all. I have a few that never even saw their original equipment mags. Mine all get Wilson 47D's or 47 OX's if they are officer size.
Now if you buy it and it turns out to be a POS, I'll no doubt ponder hanging myself but if he's any kind of buddy on the buddy scale I'd not be afraid.

Here's the strange thing about it... My wife has been looking for a 1911 recently, and we sat down last night and were going over the choices. We decided that we were going to go looking this saturday. She was interested in the RIA in 3.5" and the STI Spartan III, among others. I just think that it was de ja vu when he walked into my office offering to sell me the Kimber....almost twilight zone-ish if you ask me...

Speaking from under my tin foil hat, you just never know about these twilight zone moments I'm thinking maybe it was meant to be.
On Omen if you will...........................

My Ultra Crimson Carry II cost me around $1050 new without nite sites. The original mag functions fine -- no different than the Wilson's I have. If its not abused and I was looking for a 1911 I'd take a chance. Maybe even if I wasn't looking for a 1911!

My Ultra CDP II is the only gun I carry at work. I have had no mag issues but I do only use mags with plastic or rounded followers which are much less prone to marking the alloy frame of the Kimber. Mine feeds and shoots right with my Ed Brown. It is a quality firearm that is very reliable. Do note most alloy frame guns are not made for constant range work. For $800 you will not really lose a lot of money if you ever sell or trade it.

I think the Kimber Ultra has a factory melted treatment.
Not that I've ever considered getting a Kimber - LOL!

I happened to buy the same gun last week-my first 1911. I saw a barely-used one posted on a forum, and noticed the location was less than an hour away. I was able to purchase mine for $750 cash FTF, which was a price I was very happy with. I fired about 120 rounds last weekend with no problems. I can see why some people love their 1911s, it really fits my hand great.

That's a nice pistol and photo Garland!
My current Kimber (TLE II) is one of the best 1911s I've ever owned.

My buddy has one, it will not feed hollow points reliably. But he hasn't put the 800-1000 rounds through it yet, that the gunsmith at the shop told him to do before trying the hollow points again. With hardball, it is deadly accurate though. Has the looks and feel of a top notch pistol. He paid just under $1k for it NIB. He was taking his CC class there, and got a discount on it. I think he said they had it priced at around $1,100 or $1,200. Bud's has them at around $1050.

Well, I decided NOT to buy the Kimber from my buddy. Nice gun and all, but I just couldn't fit it into my budget at this time. :(
However, my boss bought it and told me that if I wanted it in a few months he'd sell it to me for what he paid. Nice...huh? I'm gonna seriously think about it.
I'd like to own it, but sometimes things are better left alone for now. I appreciate all the input from you folks, and I'll be sure to let you know if I get it from my boss later this summer....

Did you get a round count thru the gun from your buddy? I think some folks get discouraged that it won't feed hollow points reliably until it's well broken in, and sell it before it's broken in all the way. If you decide to buy it from the boss, ask how many rounds he put through it, and if it fed HP ammo ok.

I'm always wary about buying something from someone I know, especially someone I have to see on a daily basis. Right now, your boss is a great guy for offering you a deal. If you buy the gun and anything goes wrong with it, he changes from a great guy to the SOB who sold you that POS. JMO, YMMV.

I want to work where you do. Buddy has gun, boss buys it, boss will sell it to you for cost, I can't even carry where I work :(

I really believe there is a time and place for things.
This wasn't the time.
That's OK
When you finally get something, it will be that right something.

Have your buddy try several different types of HPs. I have three Commander sized 1911s, (two Colt, and one Kimber Pro II) and each has its favorite flavor. The old Colt (1970 era) will shoot about anything. The Kimber prefers Gold Dots. The new Colt I'm still trying to find its preference, but it is leaning toward Golden Sabers.
Bottom Line: Don't give up on a gun because it won't shoot what you/others think is the best-ever-made PD round. A decent PD round that goes bang each and every time is better than the best-rated PD round that is unreliable out of your gun.

I really like my SD guns to feed anything.
But if one particular round is an issue I can live with that.
My Mk40 had trouble with GDHP Short Barrel rounds during break in.
I haven't went back to verify since it's broke in.
As I prefer Speer GDHP 155 1150 fps rounds anyway.
And have run box after box through the gun flawlessly.
Plus it will run day and night on Winchester Ranger HPs too.
I have found that my guns often seem to group better with particular brands and weight of ammo.
That's an experiment worth the investment for me.
Speer GDHP and Winchester Rangers all seem to perform at near match accuracy in my guns.
I must say though, for my 357 magnums, I'm really starting to favor
Remington Golden Sabers.
Winchesters PDX1 is just as accurate.
But the Sabers give me that tactical followup shot advantage.
Plus the 1220 fps 4" round still runs ~1200 fps from a 3" barrel Woo Hoo!
1450 fps 4" hot 357s only get about ~1200 from a 2".
So I'm really happy with that performance from my FBI 3" Smith.
