After considering all the wise counsel from this board, and reading reviews up the wazzu, I decided on a fairly basic entry level 1911 for my first one. Also got some ultra thin grips for my small hands. Strangely enough, they both arrived today. Feels great, can't wait to shoot 'er. Here's what she looks like all dressed up with the new grips. Oh almost forgot, it's a Remington R-1 two tone.

Here is my MetroArms American Classic II I ordered from Bud's in January. It was $446.00 delivered. I think it was a great bargin. It shoots great, 200+ without a flaw.

Congrats on a nice pistol Deano!:)
I have the stainless steel version of it that I'm still wringing out. Pistol is darn accurate out of the box. One thing (I've seen this on several forums with early guns so I'm not sure it's even an issue anymore), check the dust cover for any burrs that might scratch the bottom front of the slide (FWIW, mine didn't have any). Remington does a some neat things with this pistol, but I did find a couple of things on mine that needed a little TLC (not saying your gun will need any), plus the recoil spring in mine seemed a little soft so I put a fresh 16 pounder in it (again, not saying yours will need one). You can register for the Free Platinum service plan online at http://www.1911r1.com/pages/Support/ProductRegistration.aspx
Enjoy your new pistol (slim grips look great); look forward to hearing your range report.

nice.
When I saw the new Remington 1911's I was favorably impressed, simple, yet elegant, and the action was as smooth as warm butter. The fit was excellent and the slide was very tight. All that was needed was a cuople of (8) round after market magazines. A very fine pistol for the money. The new R-1 Enhanced model has some fine additional features. Good luck with her.

I've held 3 of those here locally and without exception they were all very very nice. Exceptionally nice triggers. I thought it was just a fluke on the first one but the other two were extremely nice also.
I'm happy for you, I think it's a great gun.

I'm happy for you, I think it's a great gun.Bawana, I was thrilled for you when you got your SR1911. I would have got that one had I been able to find one. Still might some day. I thought of you while changing the grips. It was a complete bugger getting the channel screws out and the new ones in. Got any suggestions for making it easier? I mangled up a couple of the thick ones getting them out. Finally had to end up using vice grips to get them to turn. Any suggestions on making that easier?
Also gonna start looking for some mags. There's plenty of threads on here, but if anyone has any recommendations, feel free to post 'em here.

If you could get vise-grips on them, I'm guessing you are speaking of the bushings that screw into the frame. There are drivers made special to aid in removing/installing these (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=493/Product/MAGNA-TIP-reg-1911-AUTO-BUSHING-DRIVER-trade-BITS0, but beyond that the bushings are usually staked/flared in place or have thread sealer/locker applied to them. Staked ones have to be muscled out (though there are other less than ideal ways to remove them). Some heat will help when removing ones that have thread locker on them. I recommend treating the new bushings for your slim grips with blue Loctite, but don't use any on the grip screws.

Greg

Exactly what Greg said. They make a special bit for the slim bushings which I still need to get, I've buggered a few sets of slim bushings. I have the standard bushing bit.
You can use the slim bushings on a standard thickness grip usually with no problem using the standard thickness grip screws.
If you plan to switch back and forth ever, that would be the only reason I wouldn't loctite the bushings. Even then with a little heat you can still switch.
I was having a tough time trying to figure out what the heck a channel screw was but Greg once again saved me.
I'd of been there for you on those slim grips pal, but you done good and they look nice and you didn't have to wait on me so all is good.

I'll get one of those tools. Heat is a good tip too. I'll remember that if I ever decide to take them off. I did put locktite on the new bushings.

I think those are also call hollow ground bits. I bought a 56 piece set from Brownells and I use if for everything. Didn't have it a week and found a screw I couldn't fit. Nice thing is you can file the bit to fit and then order a replacement for it. If you keep the modified bit you'll never encounter another screw that it will fit. Ask me how I know?
The bushing bits are even better but only for bushings, bushings for some reason get ruined real easy even with good bits.

Not to be argumentative, but I doubt that. If your picture is there, it will be lost among the hundreds or thousands of others who are occasionally clumsy . . . or simply don't care and feel it adds "character" to a "tool".
My used, stainless CBOB came with a light example that was easy to remove with a little sand paper. Blued guns are harder to deal with.
One of the reasons I don't own any blued 1911's.

Boss,
They are indeed also called "hollow grind" bits. That's a very good point you made about modifying them for the task at hand (I have quite a few of the modified ones myself).:)

Just think twice about using any magazine that has a follower without a front skirt. Those two leading edges can ding your feed ramp, especially in guns with alloy frames.

Did the picture from their catalog listing show up correctly in the message? If so, you can see the portion of the follower that digs into the ramp pretty clearly. I think they call that a Devel follower as explained in this PistolSmith dot com post: http://pistolsmith.com/pistolsmiths/9491-aluminum-frames-devel-type-follower-prob.html

Tucson is right on cheaper mags. Ones from the better makers have the proper clearances, but if the QC isn't there, they can be poor. I have been known to stomp bad mags flat at the range to keep them from screwing up the gun. Colt, Kimber, Mec Gar, Wilson all have good mags.

The follower had no skirt and because of that, the follower would hang up on the mag tube when trying to load the first round. I replaced it with the higher quality Kimpro TacMag and life is grand. Bud's has the Kimpro TacMags on sale for $17 or $18. Usually run upward of $24.

+1 on the KimberŪ KimPro Tac-MagŪ and that is a great price! I like them because, without the optional bumpers, they fit flush in my CBOB and they do work very well. Their removable base plate is a plus if you decide to rebuild them with Tripp Research compound follower kits (or Wilson kits) in the future.

Report as promised earlier. Range trip this weekend with Yogi and the R-1 1911. 100 rounds of WWB 230 gr. FMJ. 99% perfect. One failure to feed. Shell ejected but next round hung up on feed ramp. Slide locked back on empty mag each time. Shoots very straight. Sights seem good right out of the box. Very happy with this purchase. Starting to understand what all the fuss is about.
