IMHO, the Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot 230 grain JHP's are hard to beat. The HST's & Gold Dots are my 2 favorite rounds in any caliber.:)
Edit Note: dkmatthews is spot on with the Ranger T series, also very good! ;)

My favorite commercially produced SD/HD ammo in any caliber is Winchester Ranger T series.

Any feedback in GoldDot 185gr?

I would choose the Ranger RA45T over the light Gold Dot. Now if the GD was all that I had on hand I would not be afraid to use it.

If you don't mind old school try these

185 grain federal ammo that has been around for years. 950 FPS at the muzzle. I did some redneck testing with these and upon impact it opens up to about the size of a nickel but the copper jacket does separate form the lead. But you do get 50 rounds for less than $20 so you can shoot plenty of them without going broke.

Speer 230-gr Gold Dots Short Barrel or BONDED Remington 230-gr Golden Sabers. I also have the regular 230-gr Gold Dots for my 5-inch barreled pistols.

The Federal Classic are a great choice for older pistols, too -- like older Browning Hi-Powers!

I've been using 230gr Hydra Shoks, Can't find the HST's. Got some 165gr Low Recoi Hydra Shoks to test out, but they're mostly for a friend with bad wrists, I'll stick with the 230gr.

+1 on the Speer Gold Dot for short barrel 230gr HP. Several reviews speak well of them for a short barrelled pistol.

With this caliber i prefer:
230gr. @ 865 ~fps
200gr. @ 950~ fps
185gr. @ 1050~fps
the only way to ensure these speeds with these weights is to see what they do in your gun. Standard velocity ammo might be all you need however, a +p version might be needed to meet these levels, it depends on your gun.
For general purposes i do not favor lighter weight ammo in .45acp (<185gr.), but for the usual private citizen needs i dont have a problem with a 165gr. Specialty round.

I still have a fairly large stash of Black Talon ammo purchased before the ban.

The only hp ban that I have ever heard of is NJ. I would sell the BT and buy Ranger T ammo. It still has the talons and is more reliable than the bt.

I still have a supply of the old Winchester 230 gr. Black Talon. Never saw a reason to change.
Pretty much whatever is reliable and accurate in your gun. I go with gold dot 230 in my P45, but would feel comfortable with whatever. In every real life encounter I have seen, no 45 HP expanded in a variety of guns and barrel lengths. That being said, they ALL did the job without expansion!
