View Full Version : K9: 8 round mag vs 7 round mag

I have only the 7 round mags for my NYPD K9.
Eyeballing the photos I can see of this 8 round magazine:
http://www.kahr.com/Magazines/Kahr-8-Round-9mm-Magazine-K920.asp
It looks like it would protrude only minimally more than the 7 round magazine.
Other than that, are there any downsides? Is it less reliable?
I'm having a hard time finding photos of the K9 with the 8 round magazine in place.
Can someone post photos of your K9 with this 8 round mag in place, and, for comparison, with the 7 round mag? And perhaps compare and contrast your experience with the two mags?

I think that photo is wrong! that looks like the 7 round, my 8 round is much longer. imo the 8 round mag.functions as well as the 7. But I prefer the 7, to me the 8 is to long and looks hidious.

Here's a comparison I did:

I like the 8-round extended grip mags for reloads and range use.

Are you talking about this magazine?
http://www.kahr.com/Magazines/Kahr-8-Round-9mm-Magazine-with-Grip-Extension-K920G.asp
This is the K920G, while the one I'm interested in talking about is the K920.

The K920 will leave a 1/2" gap between the grip and the base plate on the CW9 and K9.

The K920 8 round mag, (not the K920G)
http://www.kahr.com/Magazines/Kahr-8-Round-9mm-Magazine-K920.asp
looks very much like the K820 7 round mag,
http://www.kahr.com/Magazines/Kahr-7-Round-9mm-Magazine-K820.asp
and I'd like to hear reviews of, and photos of it in the K9.

Well that's not cool. I don't see the point then. Seems like the K920G would be a more stable fit. Albeit still awkward looking. I think I'll stick with my 7's.
Anyone have photos of a K920 in a K9?

good idea on stickin with the 7's. why screw up te looks of the finest look gun out there. If u can't do it in 7 shots, consider urself probably dead.
actually as u know the 8 orunder really belongs in the T series kahrs, fits perfect and looks like it belongs there.:blah:
good 500 race todayt, that Japanese guy on the last lap reminded me of the sh!t they pulled on Pearl Harbor, those sneaky bastards:blah:
Had he won that frm Franchetti, he would have had a herd of horsehead son his front door by morning:blah: Just sayiun.

I prefer the 7+1 set-up keeps the ccw more compact.

I also prefer the 7 round mag plus 1 in-the-hole. And a spare mag.
Plus I just can't see paying $44 for one extra round.

Tried the 8 x 1 once and didn't like it. Mine are now all 7 x 1.

Here is Kahr's guide to their magazines...
http://www.kahr.com/kahr-mag-guide.asp
Look at the 2nd section and it will tell you that the K920 will fit. The problem is that it is longer, so it will just stick out and leave the metal magazine tube exposed below the grip (by approximately 1 round).
Look at the 7th section and they list the two magazines to use (preferably), although Kahr never shows a photo.
GunnerD, to confuse things even more, there are two different styles of bottom plates on the 920G. The ones they show on Kahr's site are the older style... sometimes referred to as a "chariot" shape where the back curves down. The current one cuts straight across, but you may not one will ship to you. In this thread, you can see a side-by-side photo of both styles.
http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?p=158586
And here you can see a photo of a CW9 with the newer style.

Hope that helps!

5/8 of out k-p 7 rd mags are beginning to split along the back seam.
CS says send 'em in and we'll have a look. My cost though. Can't fault them for that. All 8 continue to function, and the seam hasn't traveled further down and the lips havent spread.
8rd mags, naaah. Won't do it.

bad mags, send um back. now when u say beginning to split if ur referrng to a small area towards the top of that weld that has no weld, then that is normal.
can u post some photos, as this issue is just so so so rare. We have seen splitting on the mags in the back where they make the bend but not the welds them selves

Poor terminology. My bad. No way to post images.
Thats the spot. Its about .050" long and hasn't 'grown' in length. They've been that way for a few years and hasn't had any effect on reliability. That is why I haven't mailed them off to Kahr.
If as you say, that is a normal occurence, that may be why Kahr CS has declined to pay the freight for those 5 mags. CS did not mention anything about a crack, or split, being 'normal'.
Its kinda doubtful that I would have bought into a stmt that cracked metal in the top of that many mags is normal. Since the crack hasn't grown, you may be right. But it is a bit tough to chew.

I know I am right, not arguing with u either. Why is it tuff to chew. u stated it has not grown either, which It will not. They are plasma welded and I would venture to say they stop that plasma weld right there for a reason. Had u sent kahr a photo u would have gotten the correct answer but as u stated at first here, I and most here probably expected to see the splits on the rounded sides of the magazine where some have actually blown out even due to something faulty and not welds were involved I would bet also that if u look at the bottom of ur mags they also have a slight split before the weld starts. All of my PM9 mags are exactly like that,,,slight unwelded portion on top and bottom. My PM9 mag has over 32K+ through it..Just sayin
Ur mags are OK, enjoy the K9, it is as fine a semi as u can find IMO.

Here are photos of 2 of my mags so you can compare where your weld stops.

Because I own both T and K series, I use the 8 round mags often when I shoot my K9 or P9. I don't care what it looks like, I only care that I have full mags at the range and that equals fun. I've never had any problems using the longer mags in the shorter grips.
Some people that carry extra mags for their K or P series will carry a T series mag as a reload just to have that extra round at their disposal. A good idea, IMHO.

I carry the K920G as a reload for my PM9. More is better. My K9 is stoked with a K920G and two more for spares at my TV chair. It also has CT Laser Grips... and Night Sights.

OK, so the crack is an expected occurence.
For me, it wasn't expected. Cracks in metal tend to travel, these haven't. Function hasn't been compromised. So, I guess all is well. Hopefully.
Thanks all. 'Specially the images posted by Jocko.

ur good to go, just shoot it like u stole it. Cracks in metal tend to travel IF THEY ARE INDEED CRACKS. In this case they are where two peaces of metal come together.there is no stress there. To my knowledge EVERY kahr mag looks that way.

I have a T9 and a K9. Have the one 7 mag and bought two 8 mags for the K9. The eights tend to "stick" when the release button in pushed on the K9; whereas the 7 mag smoothly drops out.
Did not know these 8's would fit the T9. Thinking of adding them to that gun and buying two more regular 7's for the K9.

I will ditto downtown. I actually bought an 8 rounder but sent it back for a 7 round mag. Lost a few bucks but the 8 just destroyed the whole look of the piece.

I agree. With that said, the cheesy plastic magazine base plates don't help either.
