Check out the side-bar video when he was on Carson in '86, the interview is hysterical, but then his on stage shooting w/ Johnny was priceless. Pretty impressive. My grandfather made me one back in the late 70s, looked just like Rufus' model. Couldn't hit crap w/ it, but great memories.

I used to be that good. In the 1970's as a kid my Dad was stationed at K.I.Sawyer AFB in Marquette County, Michigan.
The secret for me was the old wrist rocket slingshot, ordered out of the back of a Boys Life magazine. My best buddies dad was an NCO at the base hospitail and he secured us some good medical grade rubber tube to make the pull extra long.
Ammo was the taconite pellets that litters every mile of RailRoad track in the county up there and it was the best shooting stuff ever.
Anyone from up that way who could mail me a boxfull??
A crown bottle bag about 1/4th full of taconite, the ol rocket and a good eye made me quite the shooter.

We were at K.I. Sawyer from '73 to '77, right after I finished kindergarten. Don't remember much except how cold it got there... And we from there to Elmendorf in AK then on to Griffiss in upstate NY! Guess that's why I joined the navy instead of the air force... I got Hawaii and California haha Good times though

I remember watching that fellow on Carson years ago...

I had a wrist rocket when I was a kid...me and a buddy would sit on the railroad bridge and shoot for hours on end. I even think they had to replace some of what we launched off that bridge so the tracks would be stable.

Fast forward 25-30 years, I got my kids shooting the wrist rocket. They are still tyin to shoot better than me(they don't have the railroad bridge as a practice facility as I did )

we use to shoot wasps when they'd land near the mud puddles. Lots of fun

We were at K.I. from '70 to '74 I did my freshman year at Gwinn High School. Summer of 74 we moved to Grissom AFB in central Indiana.
K.I. was a cool place to spend the middle school years. Hunting, fishing, hiking and camping and I did all of it year round.
Grissom was a let down, they farmed corn on base and in every nook and cranny around us.
I had an alergey to corn pollen... hated being there.
In the end I did'nt join any service, I was ready, I had the paperwork and just had to go down raise my hand.
I was sitting in my room thinking on it hard and I thought "well whats the worse that could happen"? A little voice in the back of my head said "they could station you right here at Grissom for four years and there would be nothing you could do about it...". Ummm No! Never looked back, moved Home to Texas as soon as I could and have been happy with life since. I think I would have done ok as a service member and have sometimes thought that maybe I missed out.
I look at the Wife tonight and think about my two kids that came from the choice I did make and I know I'm happy.
I did fine as a Military brat. I am so very proud of all the GI's and Vets I have had in my life.

A quick search revealed that video to be over 25 years old. Rufus passed away in 1994. Thanks Snidely for posting the link, maybe it'll give my 8 year old son some motivation, he already thinks he's the best slingshotter around, just because he's better than his dad!

I know what you mean... I spent my 20's (the 90's) enjoying my life, maybe a bit too much sometimes ;) but always with the nagging feeling I should enlist like my father, brother, and all my uncles and most of my cousins. I guess being a military brat does that to you. Then 9/11 happened and I just had to go do my part. But I got married in the meantime and missed far too much of my childrens' lives and felt 9 years was enough to give. Everyone's gotta do what's right for them, and had I known I would have a family I may not have made the same choices, but then I may not have had my family if I hadn't joined... What a conundrum! Anyway don't feel like you missed out on anything, just enjoy every moment with your kids, it goes by too fast... Well I'm sure you know that better than me having been in high school while I was probably still in diapers... Anyway...

I wish I could find one of the old ones! EBAY I guess, I'll have too look. I have one of the new fanggled WR "fold-ups" but it is not the same. Really needs natural rubber medical hose and a much longer pull...
...And some taconite pellets.

I did do something for my country working on the jets like I do. I have caressed, cajouled and kicked started alot of fine warplanes in thirty odd years. I have worked on or built examples of every generation of fighter from biplanes to the Gen 5 jet I work on today in the F35. I take everything I have done to the F16s, F22s and now F35 has been with a serious thought to the men and women that fly and maintain them. They only get the best from me because I know that their best, keeps me and mine safe at night. May God Bless them all.
