Talked to a friend the other day and he was telling me that Tanners GS had a very nice looking SKS in there store. Now most of you know I've been looking for a deal on one to add to my military rifle collection. So yesterday I went to take a look at it. After looking it over I put a deposit on it and went back today to pick it up. This thing is so sweet the bore is excellent and the price was even sweeter for one in this area. Usually there about $80 to $100 more than what I paid. Form everything I could find out from the serial # F-1787xx it was made towards the end of 1969. All #'s match but I'm not sure that means a whole lot. I bought two 25 count boxes of Tula Ammo for it while I was there for $5.25 a box. I don't know if that is a good price or not but at the time I didn't really care.

Sweet find. Love going in that store. Except on Saturdays when I can get in there, it's 4 deep at the counters.

Good luck with that one. It's a beauty.

I want one. I've been searching for a good semi-auto 30 cal to use as a pig gun, I figure the 7.62x39 is a great choice. That deal I was working on the AK fell through, so I figured that I would shag an SKS, but not at $400. Maybe a mini-30 is in the future.

Nice grab, that would definitely have been a steal in this part of the desert.

Thank you gentilemen. I had my hands on a couple of these rifles over the last couple of months that were priced from $349 to around the $380 +/- mark.
At that price and already having a 30/30 336 Marlin that shoots about the same round as far as power goes I just couldn't get the money out of my wallet to buy one. Plus I really like shooting that 30/30. When My friend told me he saw this one at $269 I was a little bit sceptical about it because it sounded like it was to cheap but thought I'd take a look anyway. I have to admit I was supprised to see the condition of it because it is actually in nicer condition than many of the others I looked at. This is one time that patience and waiting for the right deal to come along paid off, as it must have been in someones collection because it was already cleaned up and the sling looks almost new. Now I can buy a pretty fare amount of ammo with the money I saved. Todays my birthday and this made it so much better.:D 5920

Nice find. I have a nice sks too. That flash suppressor looks aftermarket. Williams makes a nice set of fiber optic sights for the gun, not very expensive either.
Williams SKS Fire Sights (http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/image_sks.htm)
Enjoy it!

That might look like a flash suppressor but it's really a grenade launcher. Thanks I'll check them out.

sold mine Popeye about a month ago, it was totally new, Romamnian, build machined receiver, threaded barrel grenade launcher with flip up grenade sights and dual folddown front sight. cleaning kit in butt stock, stock was totally miilary, no replacement. I have had it for about 12 years and just got tired of seeingi it not used. I won't tell u what I sold it for, asI sold it to my buddy. this was really onequality well made rifle. I had never fired it even. I also sold him the remaining half case of ammo that I brought with me when I sold the business 15 years ago, are u ready for this. the boxes were marked by me back then 20 rounds for $2.50

See alot of them on the Yugo's. I believe some people drill holes in the side to give the appearance of it being a flash suppressor but the hole in the end is quite a bit bigger then the bore. About a 1/2" in size.

Thanks Greg.

they were called the yugoslavian model 59/66. one fine rifle, the gas cutoff part is really neat for the grenade launcher. I think back then they came to the U.S/. under the curio and relic exemption as the bayonet was let attached... Helleven the re4ar super adjustable sights on mine were totally machined. It just eaked in quality..

Jocko your right these things are quality. There built like a tank. All the milling that was done to these rifles would cost a furtune today. The only import marks I see on it is on the barrel hidden by the cleaning rod and bayonette. Samco Mia. Fla. M59/66A1. Yugo 7.62 X39. I believe the Yugo's were the only SKS's that came with a rubber butt pad because of the grenade launcher. With the grenade launcher you can fire the rifle in Semi auto mode or you can shoot it like a bolt action rifle by hand cycling the next round to be fired. Some people believe it is actually more accurate in the single fire mode. I'll have to do my own test on this and see how I feel about that. Either way today I'm a pretty happy 66 years young camper.:D

Congrats, Yugos are considered among the best. I just gave my Norinco to my son. Keep in mind when shopping for ammo there is allot of corrosive surplus on the market for cheap and bore solvent will not clean it. The SKS has a floating firing pin add the use of corrosive ammo without properly cleaning it out and it will slam fire. I used soap and water then solvent and lightly oiled rag. The Norinco has a chromed lined barrel so corrosive ammo is not as big of an issue on the bore, but I still used soap and water, solvent, lube on it as well. The Yugo does not have chrome lining in the barrel, but it is still a higher quality then the Norinco SKS. I stopped using corrosive ammo at all in my SKS as the savings versus clean up didn't work out in my mind. They are a blast to shoot have fun and enjoy it.

Thanks for the info. I use mil surplus in my Mosin but do not plan on using it in the SKS. Like you say cleaning after the use of corrosive ammo is not to much in the way of fun. Bolt actions like the mosin are not as bad as SKS's when it comes to cleaning.

I bought my Yugop about 10+ years ago, from a friend opf mine who was a b ig arms dealers. He had just gotten in 100 of the yugo's and they were all mint condtition, most unfired even. I think your right on the kick pad to, your particular gun to me is even more unique the the standard yugo sks, which is of the same quality but yours has alot of bells and whistles on it. If Iam not mistaken does ur front sight fip up to look likle a night sight big dot even..

Yes it does have the flip up front sight on it. Not saying this rifle was never issued but either they did one hell of a refurb job on it or it was fired very little. I think the stock might not be the original stock to this rifle as I believe it's serial numbers have been restamped on it as the coloring is slightly different in that area.
Hard to say to much of anything really as the Com ,Bloc countries where known to do a lot of restamping of serial numbers.
I do know some Yugo SKS's where believed to be never issued. What years they would have been I couldn't say. I can't help but feel that the rifle has spent more than a few years in someones collection. As it's very clean inside and out and the blueing is almost 100%. Looks to me that someone had it who knew what they were doing. There is no rust anywhere. After seeing Greg's SKS a while back it has been on my mind that I need to own one but just needed to find one at a price I thought I could live with. Now all I have to do is get some time to shoot the darned thing as I've been pretty busy as of late.

Just FYI, for that corrosive ammo, spray the innards with windex (or other suitable ammonia based cleaner) before leaving the range. The ammonia will neutralize the corrosive salts.

I do that with my Mosin Nagant. With the SKS. Like I mentioned no Corrosive ammo will be used in it. To hard to clean afterwards. Ammo like TulAmmo is pretty cheap but is not corrosive.

I have had my Yugo for about five years now. My son-in-law and I were at a local gun show and a Dallas area dealer had two cases of them, your pick, with sling, cleaning kit, ammo carry pouches and 20 strippers for $149.
As I was picking one up (and telling the son-in-law to do the same) he asked "what the heck do you need that for"?
He saw several on the used rack at the local Cabelas a few weeks ago and noted he "should have..." They were flying out the door at twice what I paid for mine.
Mine is also an unissued, numbers match gun. I was going to cut and crown the action, get rid of the grenade stuff and baonet and restock it into a sporter for the wife to plink with. Upon inspection though, the old gun was just too nice to wack up like that.
Enjoy!

Agreed I'm not going to take any of it off. This one I'm not even going to refinish the stock. I believe it has more value to it if left along. I've seen the prices of these rifles and the Mosin's Nagants go up 10 to $20 just in the last two months in this area.

FYI, Minwax Red Mahogany stain is a very close match to the shellac color the Soviets used on their gunstocks.
