State: Big rise in handgun permits in TN

February 22, 2010 12:20 PM
Associated Press

New statistics say the number of Tennesseans licensed to carry a handgun increased by 23 percent over the previous year.

The Commercial Appeal in Memphis reports that 268,711 people were permitted at the start of 2010, compared to last year's total of 218,004 on Jan. 1, 2009. The numbers come from the state Department of Safety.

The new data indicate that about six percent of Tennessee residents old enough for a handgun-carry permit had one at the start of 2010. The legal age is 21 and older.

Knoxville has the highest concentration of permit-holders among the state's largest cities. More than 11 percent of its residents eligible for permits are licensed to carry firearms.

I'm sure your right Vinikahr.
The percentages are a bit misleading because a lot of the 21YO and older couldn't pass the background check.
I'd like to know what that figure would be.

The sheriff`s departments in North Carolina have had their tongues hanging out for the last year. From what I understand, each department in all 100 counties have been swamped with cc applications.Wake County is where I live and it contains the capitol of N.C.,Raleigh.Sheriff Donnie Harrison`s department has done a remarkable job processing the apps and getting those who qualify their permits. Unfortunately, that can`t be said for all counties.I have read that the sheriff`s dept.in Mecklinberg County, which contains our largest city,Charlotte, has done an extremely poor job.I haven`t seen any figures concerning the actual number of permits issued statewide but I`d sure like to.

I do not have the specifics about other states, I am sure that can be found in each state issuing authority but Florida's is like this:

Florida has issued over 1.6 million permits since adopting the law, and has had more than 600,000 currently-licensed permit holders as of June 2009. Florida, which has issued over 1,408,907 permits in twenty one years, has revoked 166 for a "crime after licensure involving a firearm," and fewer than 4,500 permits for any reason. Those statistics concerning Florida revocations amount to 0.01%
