Been all over the world on harleys. spent 2 weeks in Europe 10 years ago, both of us riding Harleys in 8 different countries. Follwoing year did the same thing in Spain for 2 weeks.
Have owned a half dozen Road kings like yours., great bike, Probably logged over 500K miles in all my years. today fully reitred and I do live to ride.. My best riding partner is my wife, she has been riding up front for over 20+ years and is one of the best female riders I have ever been around: Just sayin

O4 Road King is my choice in bikes. We've got quite a few miles together and I've owned it outright from day one and put every nick and scratch in it. Every one has a mile and a smile and a story behind it. people ask me all the time when I'm going to trade her in and get a new one. My answer is always the same. "WHY" I already own the bike I want. If someone gave me a new bike I wouldn't get rid of this bike.
It spends less time in the shop then the new ones. The last time it was in the Harley Dealer was for it's 1000 mile free oil change in 04. If I have it figured right, the Harley, Myself, and leathers all ought to crap out all about the same time. They can throw us all in the same hole.:D
I'm on a lap top at the moment so the pic in the avatar will have to do.

I used to run a company that supplied parts to HD and have been in every one of their plants. We were even part of setting up KC and moving some bikes from York. Although I was never bitten by the bug, it was a blast to service such a strong American brand. They do it right and put out a great product. I always liked watching a bike come off the line and how they cranked it up and ran it through the gears.

Getting ready for a ride today on my '01 FXDX-T, the rare and lovely Toursport, a Dyna which came from the factory with soft bags and a small adjustable nose fairing, along with fully adjustable suspension front and rear ... by the way, heading for Wisconsin the end of the month and will be visiting the Harley Museum ... anybody been there, can provide a review?

Never been to Wisconsin but have been to the York plant (birth place of my RK) many times. Don't do to many big HD get togethers anymore. For me it's a kind of been there done that. Give me some mountains to climb and a back country road to ride around on with the RK and I'm in.

Good call Jocko, Rineharts indeed! Took the baffles out for that nice, deep Harley rumble. Really loud when you get on the accelerator. "Loud Pipes Save Lives", right? What I've always been told! Heads turn to see what's on the road...I like that! :)

This is my 2000 Road King when it's clean which isn't very often. It's a 95ci, it makes 106 ft.lbs. and 103 h.p. on dynos. It'll probably be our last bike.
The wife doesn't ride, she sits on the back and snaps pictures. And when we get home we try to figure out which ones were taken where.
We used to do the mid April Laughlin NV. river run every year until 2005. At the start of April we would bundle up and cross the high mountain passes of Oregon in the normally depressing overcast weather, and I'd think to myself, Am I having fun yet? We'd stop for lunch and it would take 15 minutes to strip down and 1/2 hour to suit up.
Then when hit Northen NV.we would strip down to denim jackets, until we started over the high CA. mountain passes (we hated traveling all the way through NV.) Then when we'd get to Death Valley it was T shirts only from then on.

This is on the Montana portion of the Bear Tooth Highway heading into the Yellow Stone. I remember this section really well. After a few beers I still get teased about my stupidity. There was a black bear cub that came out of the canyon on the right side of the road, he crossed and stopped on the slope on the other side. I was going to stop, get off the bike, get my camera and snap a picture of it. Then a little light came on in my head, and a voice said "don't stop for strangers"

Jeeze I'm feeling the age today.... how about riding45 years, mostly Harley (my first ride, at age 8 or 9, a Harley Aeromicci M-50)? Ouch... the years.
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I won a HD aeromicci at a Ducks unlimited dinner so many years ago, that I even forgot what cc it was ..
Those things are gaining a huge cult following, going for insane prices. A lot of barn and shed gold is out there. The 100cc dirt bike especially has a good following - mainly because its both powerful (for its displacement) and ultra light, having a demi-frame (with the engine being semi-structural element). The 350cc Sprint is a gas to ride, I know (don't ask). The only thing that comes close is a Buell-Blast. Nothing like a bigger displacement thumpin' 4 stroke to make you get that tingly feeling up n down yer leg (from nerve degeneration mostly...).

I know the one I won was a small one, possably a 100cc. Cost me $20 for a chance on it, It wasw donated by the local Harley dealer, who I remember that nigt at the banquet was so so drunk that on the way home he got into a car wreck and his wife after that would never let him attend a DU dinner. I also on that night won a 14 foot appleby jon boat and a Ruger 10/22, all on chances. I was on a roll that night. P:roablya cost me $200 in raffle tickets.

I still remember the first batch of bikes we built with the screaming eagle (Liberty Edition) graphics on the tanks. Some were parked in the courtyard waiting for a missing part. That is how we discovered that the red dye in the graphics was not color fast. The lovely gold and brown colors faded to ugly shades of green . . . fortunately, before the bikes were shipped.
Those were the days . . . <sigh>

I saw that up in Stugis in 2001. It was funny, bikes parked everywhere, and I waked walked around a corner, and that beauty was sitting there all by it's self, no one parked around it, other side of the street was packed with bikes, but this one sat all alone. We spent quite a bit of time looking at the stuff he'd done to it, using tin cans for an oil resevoir, and the ham can for his air filter cover, and all the little knicks he has hanging off it everywhere. It was pretty cool to check out.

some on put alot of work into making that bike look like sh!t. More than likely his closed motorcycle trailer was around the block to. I doubt if he drove it in to sturgis, unless he lived around the corner. Rat bike for some is cool.I am gladit is his and not mine. I've seen more than one of those at Sturgis, alongwith I amsure u have seen the Buffalo bike. no
doubt that box trailer is around the corner to.
stillfun to see um though..

I need some 2 wheel attitude adjustment. For some reason I haven't felt the bug this year. I guess I feel like I need to finish up some projects around here before I can allow my self a weekend away. Not much good riding close to home, it's all flat squares of farmland. I can go east about and hour and ride the scenic hiway, it's a fun road.
Hell this bike hasn't been out in over a year now: I bought it while the MoCo was rebuilding my motor. I got a thing for turquiose bikes or something. Actually the guy put it on craigslist, right before I happened to look. It's a 95 model, had less than 6000 miles on it, and had it priced way low. I happened to be his first caller, he said he got about 15-20 calls on it before I got there, but he held while I drove an hour and half, and took a ride and wrote the check. It's a nice bike for a quick runs around town. It's a lot lighter than the Harley is, and easier to get around in traffic, but the last mechanic screwed up the carbs on it and I took it back once and they fixed it buy are out of business now, so it needs the carbs cleaned an adjusted then it should run pretty good. Have a couple folks ready to buy it once it's running.
It's 95 750cc (Wish it was the 920) Yamaha Virago. But it's got plenty of giddyup when it's just me on it. The seat sucks, if I keep it I am getting a comfortable seat. This is from Cederedge Colorado, where I had a blast on it taking curves where I know my Heritage would be dragging the floor boards.
http://kartalk.pccomps.com/virago.jpg
95 Virago, with the "starter issues" and the chance to blow the carbs off their boots at just the wrong time while starting? THAT Virago????
Hell I had one!
The seat can be made better by any competant upholstery shop. Suspension was pretty good on mine, so a thinner, leaner seat was ok.

I amheadedout thursday morning to lexington, KY to their stateHOG rally, just for something to do. only about 400 miles and I just enjoy being around bikes (harley's) and some nicecountry riding down there also. Yes, they talk about starter issues on that model, but I haven't had any (knocking on wood) the guy may have put a different stater on it or something. Haven't had any carbs blow off, but the idiots that cleaned and adjusted them last didn't torque a screw or something down right, and it came loose and the bike ran like crap, I took it back and they fixed, then a few months later it does it again, but now the Yamaha dealer there is out business, the other Yamaha dealer only works on bikes 10 years old and younger. My friend's son went to bike school and majored in metric bikes, since the HD class filled up before he could get in. And he was going to look at it but he is working 2 jobs now and I hate to ask him. Probably take it down to this shop that works on anything, always has 25 bikes it seems waiting to get serviced, so will probably sit awhile before they get it fixed. I used him once before and his work was good. My friend says to take it to the bike shop his son is working at, but they sell HD clones, Triumphs, Indians, and Victories, I didn't think they worked on Viragos, but I guess a call to see if they will look at it won't hurt. Stupid me, I had new rubber put on it, and told them to do a 10,000 mile service on it, and they messed with the carbs, and I don't think they needed too. Should have done the service myself.

Jocko, the riding slowdown all started when I got my new little Hyundai. It gets same gas mileage as the HD, Has A/C, and XM radio, and decent sound system for a standard model radio,
The Hyundai is a hoot to drive, got the 5 speed and really enjoy curves. Had a super time up in the Colarado Mountains with it, although my passenger was looking a bit apprehensive. First little "sporty" car I've had since my Fiat 124 Sport Coupe back in the 70's. So I been running around it in a lot, especially on those 100+ degree afternoons when that A/C feels so nice.
Jocko, when you first got your Porche, did your riding drop off some?

Road Kill Custom, spectacular bike. Love it!
Yes, they talk about starter issues on that model, but I haven't had any (knocking on wood) the guy may have put a different stater on it or something. Haven't had any carbs blow off, but the idiots that cleaned and adjusted them last didn't torque a screw or something down right, and it came loose and the bike ran like crap
They had a ring gear that was held by friction in the starter. THere was supposed to be a shim set that was available to increase the friction, but... the true fix was to remove it all, with starter... major work... tap the case in two places for set screws, and put it all back together... with dimples in the ring gear, or, have the whole reduction gear set welded in place. Neither of which I did.
The Virago started like a British car. Everything had to be "just so". If you followed the procedure 100 percent, then it started 100 percent. Deviate with alternate results, all bad.
If, on a cold engine, you gave it any throttle whatsoever, it not only would not start, but backfire both carbs off their boots. I got used to this, and carried a spare philips head #2 x 6 inch Craftsman screwdriver for such occasions. After I sold the bike (buying another Sportster), the fellow I sold it to took a ride with me to Tampa, where we visited the "world famous" Mons-Venus, right across Dale Mabry Highway from equally famous Club 2001. Sometime after 4am, when the Mons Venus retired for the evening (morning?), he went to start that Virago (now painted Corvette Yellow) and promptly blew both carbs off, in near pitch black, in front of a seedy establishment. Fortunately, the all attentive female staff came to the rescue with a screwdriver (of sorts) and the repair was made quickly, and we hauled butt back to our lodging to be in time for 6am breakfast call before a 7am meeting..... with groans.

Wow CJB, mines a totally different beast, usually it fires right up, long as the battery is charged. It's fired right up whether down in the Kansas plains or up in Colorado high country. I don't recall it ever backfiring. I might not have enough miles on it for the sarter problem to show, still has under 10k miles on it. Even with the carbs messed up, it would still start, you just had to drive with the choke about 1/3-1/2 on. I have a buddy that want's it real bad, he's got a bad back, and is tired of riding his Electra Glide, and wants something smaller. I hate the seat, it looks nice and plush, but it's not comfortable at all. Travelcade/Saddleman has a seat for it that looks like it would work, a friend has one on his bagger and really likes it. Has just a little bit of support for the very low spot on your back. I'm not real fond of those buckhorn handlebars either. Rather have a set of mini apes on it like the Heritage has.

From an earlier life I still remember more than one trip over the handlebars of my Sportster launched by the kick starter.
Then I was just a little fella and it didn't take much. I always remembered to have the bars turned hard left so I didn't tear my knee off on the way over.
I still remember that movie phrase "How much do you weigh? How bout you kick on this thing awhile"
Magneto ignition and a Bendix carburetor... that'll do it every time

do u like the true dual set up?? Love the RK. owned 2 of the 2003 screamin eagle RK when Harley first introduced the screamin eagle bikes. Gold with black flames. Wife andI both had one. Great bikes. Also had a 95th anniversary RK custom
back about 12 years ago I did an iron butt ride, did 1150 miles in 18 hr and 30 minutes. When I got down in florida to where my daughter lived in Live Oak, I was so so so tired that when I pulled off of I-75 into Live Oak, that when I got off the interchange at astop light, I actally fell off the bike, asI forgot to put my feet dowhn at th red light. Luckily some kindsin a pickup was behind meand helped meback up. did no damage as the engine guard and rear bag rails protected the sheet metal. . I did that on a 98th Road Kind custom anniversary model.
My my my, for the memories..

Yes Jocko I do like them. Has a nice even sound to them. Coupled with a set of Andrews TW26 cams, Screaming Eagle push rods and high performance lifters they give real nice street perfomance. There not loud either. The muffler bodies are RUSH mufflers but made my own baffles for them out of reworked and rewelded inards of old Softail mufflers. They sound good to my ears. Not to loud unless I really wack the throttle, but not stock either. It did take me some times to get the performance I wanted without getting to loud. I frieking hate loud mufflers, especially when on a 9 day road trip. They'll drive you nukin futs crazy. I had enough of loud when I worked on High Rise buildings. The local Popo's never look at me twice and neither to the locals of the communities I ride through. I'm sure they hear me comming and going but not enough to piss them off or wake there babies. The bike has been a real good bike and has never been in the shop for any major repairs. I kid my buddies and tell them it was made on a wednesday right after morning coffe break. I've been using pretty much Mobil one 20/50 V twin oil in it since the first 1k miles with some great results. The RK is my 3rd Harley and also my favorite. It's plain to see why so many PD's use them. There balance is incredable.

Whew, brings back good memories. I was a biker back before it wasn't cool,i.e.,in the 70s-early 90s. Back then we were referred to as,oh what was that term, dirtbags! When I'd pull up to a light, folks would lock all their doors, even the cops! Me and my young buddies decided the best thing to improve our image was to form a local riders association, so we posted a big scarey patch on our backs, that really helped!
Then some OTHER guys with bigger scarey patches on their backs let us know they weren't impressed, and demanded we cease and desist with the patch thing. :2eek:
Then our 30s and 40s came along, and families, and the scooters slowly disappeared from our driveways.
Ahh the memories.... here's an old Polaroid of my lost girl,a '73 HD sporty with a 4" over chopper front end and some nasty cams, vroom vroom....

My first Harley was a sporty. Rode that for a couple years till we decided we needed a bigger bike so then bought a Softail STd. Rode that till right before I retired and went with the Road King. It much easier on the body on those long trips. My first bike I got while in the Navy in Key west Fla. It was a 305 honda Super Hawk. Navy pay was not all that good in the late 60's. I rode that thing up a down the Fla keys at least once a month for 2-1/2 years. Wasn't fast or all that pretty but it was some kind of reliable and I beat the Sh8 out of it. It sure beat walking everywhere. I wish I still had it to put in bike shows. I used to ride it right in the bar we called MOM's at the time on Duval street. Not to far away from Capt Tony's.
Life on the USS Bushnell AS15 in Key west Fla back in those days sure was tough duty. Bwaaa, haaa, haaa.
We used to hook up with the tourist girls riding the chonch train.
The years 1967, 68,69 was a beautiful thing and a real hoot, and that little 305 Honda made it that much better. :D

I just noticed this thread. I'm probably one of the only Harley riders I know who doesn't have any photos of his bike. I ride an '01 FXD, black, tricked out as a bagger. I change windshields depending on the weather, everything from the quarter fairing to the large touring windscreen. When I got it, I installed Dyna Power slip-ons, a K&N air filter and rejetted the carbs. I also have heated grips to extend the riding season. I have plenty of HD skull accessories on it. It goes by the name of Captain Midnight. One of these days, I'll get around taking a photo...
