View Full Version : Let's try this again. Range report - CM40
Well, I finally get the time and money to go to the range yesterday. After the mag follower broke on the very first 6 shots through the gun, I e-mailed Kahr and they sent me 2 replacements. It was a 10 day wait, but I did get them finally.
So, I put 150 rounds through it yesterday. Functioned flawlessly, I must say. I checked the follower after each magazine to see if it was having issues, and it was just fine. Maybe just got a bad follower the first time. Anyway, I ran 3 different brands through it, Blazer, Tula, and Golden Saber (all 180 grain). All three worked just fine, and were accurate as all get out (as in seriously accurate). The guy 2 lanes down was shooting a small .380 and I watched him a bit. Good form, and was steady, but his shots were all over the freakin' place, while my CM40 was putting them in a very small area, which I was quite impressed with.
The only real complaint I had was the insane recoil. I was prepared for it, obviously, but man, it was VERY hard to keep a firm grip. I had to readjust my grip after almost every round, and the one time I didn't, because I wanted to practice some double taps, the thing came back so hard and awkwardly that the plastic actually took a chunk of skin off the top of my thumb. I think it was mostly because there was no purchase for my pinky. Shooting full power .357s through my buddy's little tiny Taurus revolver hurts like all get out, but with the larger grip, it's far, far easier to control. They do make grip extensions for this model, yes? If so, I'll definately get one for when I go to the range.
All in all, it worked and it exceeded my expectations. Nice little gun, and powerful, too. I kind of do regret not going for the 9mm version, but I have a 9mm as my house gun, and wanted something different and a little more powerful. I have no doubts now that if I needed to use it against an aggressor, that the accuracy combined with the .40 caliber power would remove anyone from the playing field very handily.

You might try Magna Porting it. I did my K40 which even being all steel just plain bucks too much for me. Not unpleasant to shoot but just too much flip for me. The Magna Port job toned it down some and looks wicked cool too which of course is the most important thing.

Congrats on your CM40! I have had a PM40 for about a year, and I had to wrap the grip with racquet tape and even then I don't usually want to shoot more than a box of ammo through it. Dang gun is so accurate though, that I love shooting it, at least for a while. I got a CM9 after the PM40 so I could practice a little with the CM9 yet carry the PM40. Both have functioned perfectly after break-in.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the cm40! I wouldnt suggest a port job on a carry gun, if the gun has to be used close to the body or face in a self defense situation, the gases from the port COULD cause injury to yourself. I would suggest looking into some sort of grip though. I love the talon grips on my cm9. I have the rubber version, but they make a sand paper type version that has even more grip to it. Just my opinion...

PYROhafe, I've heard that same story about ported guns from various people. That's why I bought the ported barrel for my CW40 instead of Magna-Porting it, so I could return it to stock condition if I needed to sell it.
My question, Does anyone have a documented case of the ported gun injuring it's owner by blowing gases in their face? I can't seem to find any.
Oh and welcome to the forum Dore, glad your CM40 is such a tack driver for you.

????? What... jocko with no comment... uh o... what have i done???
from me,I have shot ported guns for over 25 years, still have my nose and eyes and no fires etc. Guarantee u my second shot is gonna be on target faster than a non ported gun. I am sure some have maybe suffeed some type of porting issue, although I have never read of it but certainly someidiot has put it under his nose to see etc. I guess a non ported gun being fired from waste or under ones face would never do any harm????? I just don't buy it but again we all have opinions. Sometimes some people give opinions on subjects to that they have no real experiencein whether it is harmful or not, but merely repeating what others have stated. Porting being one of them. I would also venture to say that if I had a BG that close to me thatif I am gonna suffer any porting damage, I wonder whgat he will look like???
So no argument from me. I will continue to carry my Ported PM9 and #1 that BG ain't never gonna get into my face in the first place
I didn't want u to jump off any bridge with jocko's no comment thing, so I am doing this to save ur life:D

Ok... i feel a little better. It worried me to have no words of wisdom from jocko. But once again he is correct. I have never shot a ported pistol, so what I stated is just info ive read while trying to decide for myself to port or not on my cm9. Just thought I should share considering someone suggested porting and I dont want a fellow kahrtalk member to jump into anything without good info. (that wouldnt really be my fault though) This is just the first link I found of a story of someone hurting themselves with a ported handgun http://www.defensivecarry.com/forum/general-firearm-discussion/56161-glock-17c-retention-postition-dangerous.html of course the guy was shooting a rock so he might not have been too bright anyways. :D ( JK i like glocks too)
jocko.... u got any pics of that ported pm9 anywhere? I was curious how they would do that without an extended barrel.

look up jocko's custom PM9 on this site or maybe some good guy can direct u to it better than I cvan.
heh, no harm no foul. porting is not for everyone or they would be opn every gun. It does do as they say , at least magna port's does. We have alot of porters on this forum, I think jeepster being one of them to. I really never hear of complaints but asu know it probably has happened. To me there is nothing cooler looking than a maga port job.
I love to shoot my PM9 and my round count shos it, My K9 is ported,my G19 is ported and my J frame model 60 is ported. I don't work for magna port. My ported PM9 is my 1005 defense gun. I just don't fear the porting thing what so ever. No doubt 99.995% will never shoot their gun in anger, and more than likely 99.995 will never have any gun under their nose if SHTF happens. I love to shoot, I don't nee dpunished in shooting a kahr as they are so small and light that magna porting certainly makes me a better shot, and I am a horrible shot by theway. Does a person need a ported gun??? Probalby not, but once u try one, it might just make a believer to. One of the strange things that I have noticed when porting is discussed is that none that I can remember have ever regretted doing it. Just sayin.
nice thing is u stated ur opiion in a nice way as I have tried to do and as u know being I am such a veteran senior member, u should proabably bow to my wishs and box up ur 13 semi's and send them to magna port. Just sayin

Has anyone chrono'ed a ported vs non ported pistol of the same make with 3-ish inch barrels to see if you are losing anything significant in velocity? I am sure the bad guy can't tell the difference between 1000 and 1100 fps, but enquiring minds want to know...

magnaport I think states around6% lossof velocity. BG can't tell,to my knowledge.

The first thing that I would try is a Hogue Handall slip on grip to tame that recoil. They are an inexpensive fix. A wise Sage once told me that recoil was in the eye of the beholder. I've forgotten his name but he answers to Jocko. :)

george zimmerman told me!!! Just sayin
I really don't want to use one of those slip-on rubber grips (I use one on my Smith) due to the fact that I carry this as a pocket pistol, and want NOTHING that can catch or stop the gun from slipping out of my in the pocket holster.
They do make the grip extensions for this model, though, right?

They do make a grip extension, but its going to hinder your pocket carry. I would serioulsy look into the talon grips (or something like kahrs agrip) makes a huge diffference in grip without adding length to the grip.
Well, the extension will mostly be for trips to the range, as I plan on carrying with the flat buttlpate installed.
Would you recommend the granulate or the rubber Talon grips? They look interesting, but the granulate ones look like they might strip the flesh from my hands during that hard recoil, hehe.

I have the rubber on mine, and it made a world of difference! I know when i got the intall instructions for the rubber ones, it mentioned being able to sand the granulated ones down a little if they were too rough for your liking. Ive also heard some people say if you plan to carry with the grip against skin then the granulated is too rough, but the rubber works great. I have no regrets with the rubber grips on my cm9... they made a big big difference in the grip for me.

I'm not particularly recoil sensitive, but this makes me glad I bought a MK40. It's almost exactly the same size, but weighs a half pound more, which takes it out of the 'pocket gun' category. However, it is also quite accurate for such a small pistol. Any flyers were my fault, not the gun's.

I bought a CM40 a few weeks back, and had the exact same problem on my first 5 rounds. It continued to function, so I shot 75 rounds through it. I called Kahr and they recommended I send it back in to make sure that everything was lined up correctly. Sounds like I should have just taken the offer to have a few replacements sent. Just out of curiosity, did they offer you the opportunity to send it back in at their expense?
The recoil is "in the house", but I didn't think it was severe, and I always considered myself somewhat recoil-sensitive. My biggest issue was that I hadn't done anything about the cheese-grater grip, and after that first 5 rounds, I had to put a glove on.
I did have some aiming issues (which is different than accuracy issues). Most of my shots were left of center, and a tad bit low. I thought I was going to have to adjust the sights, but when I really slowed down and concentrated, it hit dead center (although in SD situations, I doubt the BG will stand still while I get it just right). When I get it back, I'll spend some more time trying to get used to the sight picture.
I'm glad you've had no further issues. I hope that's the way it will go for me. I really like the feel of this gun.
