View Full Version : I'm Going To Teach Handgun Safety

Been thinking about it a long time, so it's time to actually do it.
LOT of people buying handguns around here locally, and God bless'em, some have no clue what to do with them.
So, it's not going to be about self defense or home defense, just how to be safe, operate, and secure a handgun.
What do my compadres here think about it?

Its definitely needed. You have your own facility or have to rely on another party?
I'd be down but it's a far piece to Texas from Washington.
I'm pondering a relocation, maybe we'll be neighbors and then I'll sign up.
I wish you good luck. Hope it works out well for you and your students.

Thanks
I've partnered with two local ranges, one public indoor and another private club.
Both have A/C training facilities! :)

Best of luck! Great concept! Definitely a service to mankind. Hope you do well.
One tiny detail that jumped out at me while reading your website: This should be "Small classes ensure . . . " as in make certain, rather than "insure" which is . . . well, insurance, like for your car or for personal liability. ;)
Speaking of insurance, do you think you will need any? How do the ranges you are planning to work with feel about that issue? Here, hold this wet blanket . . . http://home.mindspring.com/%7Ejustsomeguy/icon_lol.gif
Thanks!
Wifey is fixing that typo right now.
And, yes, I purchased the commercial liability insurance thru the NRA.
The private club requires them being listed as a named insured, so it's not really a problem.

Several guys I know have tried that & or CCW permits training & found the insurance to be too expensive. One instructor told me you have to have $1,000,000 of liability insurance. That may just be here in Az. tho.

All I want to know is how in the hell did you get so gosh darn good looking. You take some sort of supplements or something?
I've always prided myself on my natural charm and good looks but you are one handsome dude. Not in any mano mano kind of way you understand, but in a room full of future cyber brides they might just look at you first.
What's your secret.
A little TV time like that can't be a bad thing for you either. Go for it.

Good luck to you. Wish there were more classes like this available around me.

It's great to see somebody put what they want to do into action. I can tell you that Doc will definitely teach them well about hearing protection. He sent me some plugs that got me wearing plugs again. They are ear screws that you squeeze in and twist. They are the first ones that I can tell work.
Good luck Doc, glad you are off to a good start.

Best of luck to you doc! I was a young hunter safety instructor for several years, and I got a lot of satisfaction out of helping kids understand how firearms work, and how to safely fire them. I got sick and let my license expire, and never did renew it.
I almost think something like this should me mandatory for first time gun buyers, but I hate to see any laws passed regarding it, we have too many gun laws already.
Maybe instead you could offer a discount to new gun owners for your class or something. Maybe you could get in with some LGS's and see what you can work out with the owner about including a coupon or business card with each handgun purchase. I think you are doing a good thing, that might end up saving some lives.
Some people go buy a gun and some ammo for it, then put it up somewhere, in case they ever need it, and never practice with it.

All good ideas, thanks!
I plan on working with local churches to underwrite some of their members who might not be able to afford training.

Kali, the report, and I went through our local Citizens Police Academy together.
She's married to an LEO, and I offered to comp her a class, so she may use that to do a longer, feature piece.

I can attest to the need for this exact type of class.
Customer: I'd like to buy a firearm.
Employee: Ummm, rifle, shotgun or handgun.
Customer: Hmmmm...a handgun I guess.
Employee: (after a long pause from customer) Revolver or semi-auto?
Customer: What is the difference?

Awsome to get good TV coverage on the issue. Probally less weird here in Texas than in other places, but to explain, so well, that firearms safety is #1 to such a wide audience is great.
Two of three Dallas/Ft.Worth local TV stations have covered the same handgun issue in a positive light lately...
... but coverage of the "FlashBang Bra Holster" is the best we can do up here...

Ahhhh well, little steps.
Best of luck with the new venture.
This is great! I have been an NRA instructor for a number of years. It is good to teach safe handling of firearms to new shooters.
Joining the firearm instructing community is a great idea. I wish you the best of luck. I am confused on one thing though... In the TV spot, I thought I heard it said you are a certified NRA instructor. On your website, it says the class is NOT a NRA class.
Are you not teaching NRA's Basic Pistol Class? If not, how come? It covers everything you are covering and the format is excellent. Maybe I misunderstood? (As I get older that is a real possibility!) ;)

Thanks, and that's an excellent question.
Basic Pistol is a GREAT course!
I've condensed the comprehensive NRA Basic Pistol class into an even more basic program, spending more time on the fundamentals of safety and handling using air soft guns in the classroom before shooting live ammo at the range.
My hope is to reach more people who have limited time and funds.
I will recommend they get other, more advanced training and, maybe later, add the full NRA course to our curriculum.
For now, it's "See Spot run. Run, Spot!":)
Congradulations DOC, and best of luck in what I feel is a very worth while cause. I too have resently taken the NRA Basic Pistol Instructors class and waiting on my Certificate paperwork. I am in the process of also taking Range Saefty Officer, Rifle courses. Next up is Inside the home & outside the Home courses. I am going to be a busy boy this year.

I'm sure that you'll do a great job, Doc, because you seem to enjoy with enthusiasm what you are doing. Have fun and above all be safe.

Ok, we have the same tv market, and given that I don't get much tv watchin' in these days, I still missed that.

Coached my first student yesterday.
She'd never fired a handgun before.
Using Brian Enos' ideas about stance, hold, and sighting (FRONT SIGHT) she practiced with Airsoft in the classroom.
Lo and behold, when we shot the .22's at the range, she immediately did well and applied BE's ideas.
Several things really pleased me:
1. She understood WHY be's ideas worked
2. She was able to quickly apply them.
3. She's confident and very eager to shoot again.
That's win-win-win right there!
And I KNEW it would work. :)
