View Full Version : Manual Extraction Difficulties With CW40

I can't eject a live round from the chamber of my CW40. This has happened before, but this time I can't seem to get the thing to spit the cartridge out.
I'm not working the slide gently...I'm giving it a good solid rack. But the nose of the cartridge gets hung up on the right (from the rear) side of the barrel hood.
Anybody have a suggestion, other than firing the thing in the dirt in my back yard?
I've done a search here, but can't find any results.
Thanks.

Just used a screwdriver to gently pry the Federal 180 gr jacketed flat point (Wally World) out of the ejection port.
Took the barrel/slide apart, and noticed a 'teardrop' shaped shallow surface on the underside of the rearmost part of the barrel hood...the part where the cartridges are getting hung up.
I've got 3 images, but I don't know if I have the right to post them, being pretty new around here.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
try different ammo.... length and ogive matter

I've tried WWB 165gr, Federal 165gr HST's, and Remington 165gr Golden Sabre's. They all function great when firing the rounds, but get hung up when I try to manually eject a chambered round.
After removing the barrel, I've tried dropping all these rounds into the chamber, gently push them to seat them, and they all fall out without help when the barrel is turned over.

I filed a bit off the corner of barrel hood where the rounds were hanging up on my CW40. Didn't have to remove very much material before the rounds ejected without hanging up. That was on a wide mouth Ranger 155gr HP bullet. It was a pain in the butt to do, as I'd maybe take 3 stroks with the file, then reassmeble the pistol and see if the round still hung up. It took 3 or 4 rounds of this before the cartridges ejected without hanging up. I probably voided the warranty by "gunsmithing" on it, but I doubt Kahr would ever notice the bit of material removed.

Here is a pic of where I filed off the material. I't didnt take much, and you can't tell from looking at the top of the barrel that any filing was done. I took a standard metal file, and did about 3 strokes at a time before reassembling the pistol and seeing if the loaded round would eject. Funny, I got a ported barrel for my CW40 and it has no problem ejecting live rounds.

I did that on my pM9 as it was starting a burr, and I just filed off that sharp corner5 and rounded it off and smoothed it off and it never came back. I see nothing wrong if anyone wants to do that either.

Thanks, guys. I have the same issue with my CW40. Right now it's only hollowpoints failing to eject live rounds (I've tried only Corbon DPX and Fed HS). Only a couple of FMJ failures when I started to turn pistol upside down to eject, just to check other methods that might be tried with the HP's.
Looks like file time.

as u well know these damn guns are small, not alot of room anywhere. Basically they are meant to shoot the bullet and eject the casing with ease, Trying to eject a live round sometimes is more difficult to do. Its doable but for some, not as easy....

Mine did the exact same thing for the first 200 or so rounds, but now seems to eject fine when racking the slide by hand. Every round that hung up did it at that same spot. I was thinking of the file fix myself before the problem went away by itself with more break-in time. I wonder why Kahr hasn't trimmed that corner off at the factory, or if it's supposed to be there for some reason?

This may be a dumb question.
Will it eject a live round if you remove the magazine, hold the pistol upright, and slowly pull the slide back until the loaded round falls down the magazine well?
I do this all the time if I'm just trying to unload a loaded gun and not practicing malfunction drills.

try it and see

try it and see. It may not as on the left side u have the ejector wanting to push it out of the gun and then u have the extractor with a good hold on the casing.king against each other.

OK, I took my Kahr CW40 by the gun store where I purchased it two weeks ago (bought as used). The salesman brought out one of their gunsmiths to look at it, as he said it could be a serious problem. I did not mention what thetmanski observed in his Kahr just to get his objective opinion.
This guy looked at the gun and my non-ejected rounds and flatly said one or more components are too large for the size ammo. "Kahr uses many of the same components for 9mm guns as they do for 40 and 45." He went right to the extractor pin and said it was probably too long for .40. Took it to his shop and in about 30 minutes had trimmed 1/32 to 1/16" from the extractor and got it ejecting FMJ and Hydra-Shok, both flying out of breech. However about 50% of the time with Corbon DPX (BIG mouth). I checked the Federal HPs at home and looks good so far. I'll check the Corbon ($2 a pop!) at the range tomorrow. But I'd rather use Speer or Winchester.
A newcomer to Kahr like me would say that each gun has its own little quirks.

No problems except a new slide stop spring. Mine feeds mixed ammo ranging from 135's to 180's in the same mag after the break in period.....

My CW40 does it too, it does bother me because I need to clear my gun sometimes when I get home from work, I have a small child so I dont keep anything chambered thats not locked up. I can get the round out, but it takes some time.

Just not alot of room in thqat ejection area to unload with ease a live round. No doubt it can be done, as 99% of aqll members here don't report this as an issue. U and thegun hav enot yet perfectly mated up yet. It will come to you, just do it at the range alot. using the TAP, RACK AND BANG drills. U need to be abl eto do that dirill anyhow in cae u have a ftf or fte in a SHTF scenario to. What CJB stated is right to. ur recoil spring might be just very tight at this stage and hand racking can be more trying for some. nothing better than rounds down rang eto get aq nice designed set on your recoil springs..
