CW40
I've run about 150 rds. of tha' WWB 165 gr. FMJ and about 150 rds. of the
Gold Dot 180 gr. GDHP... AND some 50 rds. or so of a friends, light hand load
solid lead. (powder, grs. etc. I don't remember what he said/used. BUT, it was
messy.) Never again.
I've gotta' tell ya', NOT ONE FTF or hic cup what so ever. ECEPT, with one rd.
of tha' handload, which actually failed to seat in the chamber.
I trust and value my CW40 ... all tha' way ! :D

I carry Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel. 100% feed reliability. The short barrel is nice if you have the option. I think the nickel plated casings are a plus since I carry IWB for oxidation resistance.

I use CorBon 135gr or Remington Golden Saber 165gr for carry and whatever is cheap and available for practice. Haven't had any reliability problems with any of the ammo I've used in it so far.

I've tried several and settled on Win. Ranger 155 HP. Accurate, snappy but easy to control. Works well in my G27. I also tried Fiocchi 180 Gr. XTP HP loads but they seem to have more recoil than fast shooting allows.
Good luck...

I only carry .40 in the Federal expanding FMJ. They look just like a regular FMJ but they have a small piece of rubber inside the tip(not visible like Critical Defense) that causes the round to mushroom on impact. They work very well(i've tested them alot). The only problem is they are very hard to find on the civilian market. Thats my top choice for .40 carry ammo. f3

When I carried .40 I liked the Remington 180g Golden Saber, definitely a hard hitting round.

and yes to toot my own horn :) I have some for sale on this forum. I am willing to start breaking this lot up and shipping.

Whatever is locally available - I prefer to buy my defensive ammo off the shelf.

Currently it's 180 grain Speer Gold Dots for the .40.

Rem 180 JHP

Just a thought for ammo "homebrewers": re the Fed HPs and others with rubber in the hole,
part of the reason claimed is to keep cloth from jamming the HP.
Wonder if silicone rubber sealant from the garage would improve or ruin regular HPs?

i use whatever feeds and cycles perfectly. there was a sale on gold dots so i got one box and cycled them. they worked good, so i bought a small lot of them. ballistic tests were pretty good. i thought about cross shopping different bullets based upon whether they got n amount of expansion versus n+.01 expansion and such, but IMO i just got what works and trained to shoot instead of shop. just hopefully we never have to find out any of us were right.:yo:

disclaimer: not an expert, just my two cents.

I think HST, PDX1, and Hornady Critical Defense are good choices, depending on how they feed in the gun (tested). What is working for me in a PM40 gun that is real particular is Hornady in both XST HP or Critical Defense. Of course, HAP should be great too. I plan to try the PDX1 and HST based on their excellent performance tests and reviews. What definitely doesn't work is Hydra-Shok. The ogive cavity is too large...would be my theory, offering no feed-friendly surface to the barrel ramp.

I currently have 180gr Winchester Rangers in my 40, I used to have Federal's 155gr High Shok load (same load as DHS). I also have some BVAC 180gr JHP's that look just fine. This day and age most any hollow point that feeds will do what it's supposed to. Pick what feeds, and in a weight that you prefer and go with it. Just my 2 cents.

I'm a Gold Dot guy thru and thru. If I wear it, it's probably got Gold Dots in it. I do prefer the lighter 165er's in the 40. And I want to try the Short Barrel stuff if the opportunity ever presents itself.

I have been having serious thoughts of switching to Winchester SXT's after looking at expanded bullets on another thread here. Not sure why I didn't feel the need to switch after going to the Winchester show and tell. They are nasty and look like they would feed better than the Gold Dots although mine feed perfect in everything I shoot.

Kind of ask myself why switch now other than the dept carries Winchester and I'd be tempted to requistion when needed and that would be a sin.

Has anyone tried the Cor-Bon 135 gr JHP that is advertised as screaming out of the barrel at 1320 fps and delivering 526 fpe? According to several sources I've read the number one man stopper is the 125gr .357 Remington or Federal JHP, and the Cor Bon looks like it's getting very close to those .357 ballistics. (1450 FPS, 586 FPE).

I've used the Corbon 135 gr JHP. Recoil actually seems slightly less, and flash is relatively low. However, I'm not convinced that the advertised ft. lbs. are accurate.

I now carry Federal HST Tactical 155 gr - expansion out of a 3-1/2" barrel is pretty impressive, and it has a low flash. You can get it from www.ammunitiontogo.com (http://www.ammunitiontogo.com)

isnt 135gr real small for a .40? i carry 147gr 9mm in my pm9 & 180gr in my glock. is their a ballistics advantage to the smaller round in .40 or is this just for recoil?

Sorry people, but I have to issue a stupid question alert.......is there a such thing as a 40 cal. +P round?

Bawanna
12-31-2010, 01:45 PM
I've never heard of one. I believe the 40 is already pushing the envelope on pressure limitations. I'd surely see no reason for a +P 40 and it I was any kind of average example it wouldn't be a hot seller.
If you seek a hot 40, I suggest you get its parent cartridge the 10mm.

As usual I could be wrong on this but I don't think so.

Thanks Bawanna, not looking for anything hotter, just curious. I'm with you in thinking that the .40 is plenty hot enough but some one I know asked the question and it kinda got me wondering since I have never heard of one either. By the way, just put a PM9 in layaway today. Another addition to the family. I'm so proud!!!!

Gotta love that. Lots of new guns around here in the last couple weeks and many enroute as we speak. I'm feeling just a little left behind here but it's been a good gun and accessory year for me too. I surely ain't complainen thats for certain.

I've done a lot of looking around the net to see if there were any +P loads for the .40 and have never found anything. As has been said before in this thread, I think the .40 self defense ammo is loaded pretty hot as it is.

The 9 is actually for my wife but I got a feeling I'll be having alot of fun with it too. I carry a CW45 everyday but this little 9 would be a great BUG or even when deep concealment is needed. Now I carry a Taurus PT740 (40 cal.) in those situations, it will be nice to have the option of a Kahr with a trigger system the same as I'm used to carrying with my .45. On a side note, I just saw the Crimson Trace free dvd they sent me so now I have all sorts of new ideas popping into my head. Too many choices, not enough money! What's a guy to do?

My first post. Newbie here to .40cal & Kahr (CW40). Presently carrying Federal HST XM40HC, which reportedly is an overrun of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) orders and is the exact same load and bullet as the P40HST1 with two differences:

1. The case is brass, instead of nickel plated brass, and
2. Velocity specification is held to tighter tolerances than the P40HST1.

73 to all!

I think most corbon ammo is hot hot hot. Maybe this +P on the 40 cal is an add hype. as we just don't see much 40 +P, as it is already hot hot hot.

corbon still makes that exact round you show, ONLY no +P rating for that round. Exactly the same round in pfs and energy. That is a hot round. Save the box, u have a rare marked box for sure. You just don't really see +P 40 cal listed. Kinda surprised me when you posted it but now tat we know it is 15 year old ammo, more than likely that was good ol add hype back then... That is one heh of a round, their lightest 40 cal JHP they make to.

So far...Hornady Critical Defense. I have a new Kahr PM40 and am still in the break-in period. I've shot about 150 rounds through it so far and had 4 instances where the slide locked back and the round failed to feed. This happened twice with WWB FMJ, and twice with Remington Golden Saber/165 gr. (of which I only shot a few). Still, I like the expansion of Golden Saber best and for now, they ride in my Glock 27. As for the PM40...I like it. I know I'm still in the break in period... but so far I've had no issues with Hornady CD and and will likely stay with them in this gun...

two things. #1 make darn sure it is not your thumb doing it, . #2 check to see if those rounds could possbly be hitting the inside of the slide stop lever and pre-engaging it. Very easy to test out. Go to the kahr tech section and hit on Propper prepping of your new kahr, it will tell you how and what to look for. What is happenig there is not what I would consider a break in period thing.

PM sent, nice gun..

Had discussion the other Saturday with an ICE agent up visiting his father. He explained the training he has received. Three shots, two center mass then one head. Wow that seems excessive? He said the issue ammo is 180 grain.(40S&W)

I just ordered my first .40 cal this week - an ex-CHP S&W 4043. I wasn't able to find a 3rd gen S&W in 45 for a decent price. My son offered to trade some Speed Lawman practice rounds and some Gold Dots for a few boxes of the 9mm I have laying around. Since I seldom shoot the 9mm and I have about 1500 rounds, it sounds like a good deal.

I'm currently carrying 135gr Winchester Rangers in my CW40. I had intended to use the 155gr Rangers, but they hang up when you try to eject a live round for cleaning and such, although they shoot real nice. The bullet is just wide enough that it gets wedged in the ejection port. I just don't want to be in a situation wrestling with my gun in public to unload it. Or if it happened to not go bang, could be a hairy situation trying to eject it and load another round. I like the .40 bullets 165gr and under, but some agencies like the 180 gr. because they penetrate windshields and other barriers better than the lighter weights. I intend on trying the 135gr and 140 gr CorBon next. I think that 125gr .357 magnum load being so effective influences a lot of my ammo choices.
