View Full Version : I did it finally!

I know for most everyone out there this isn't a big deal. But, for me it has been many years in the making.
I was handed a long gun (I have no idea what kind or size it was.....certainly bigger than a child should probably shoot) when I was a kid . I'm sure they thought it would be funny. It knocked me on my behind and scared the living daylights out of me, so bad that it has taken me many years to finally work up the courage to shoot another long gun.
My Daughter and Son-in-Law said to me enough is enough, took me out back, handed me the AR and walked me through the whole thing. I have to say, they were very patience with me! By the time they had me ready to pull the trigger an hour later, I was sweating and shaking. Didn't help that I'm cross dominate and couldn't see a darn thing, because I kept trying to close my right eye and shoot with my left. Daughter walked over and taped a leaf to my left eye lens.
I finally pulled the trigger! Have to say......wish I hadn't waited so long. They said they'll work me up to bigger ones each week till we get to the 7mm something or another.

Just don't move up the calibers too fast. And make sure you wear a padded jacket or shooting vest, and that the rifles have good recoil pads and not steel plates, those tend to hurt a bit in the larger calibers, like 30.06 and up. Maybe something like a 30-30 or something on that order should be next. They don't usually have recoil pads, but they're not very hard kickers.

That's a pretty cute daughter you got there. Wait, am I going down for saying that? Meant in a totally nice out of the gutter way ya know?
Stay away from the 7mm, that's a hurting gun right there, no use for it anyhow.
06 is all you'd ever need. I'd prefer a 338 over the 7mm or the 300, still belts ya a good one but not quite so hard.
AR's are pretty tame, my wife calls it an elephant gun after shooting it indoors once, it's noisy but no kick.

Gotta quick question I've always wondered about. When you ladies tie your hair all up in pretty knots and stuff, how the heck do ya get it untied and not all knotted up. See it sometimes and think wow, gonna be a few hours hetting that straightened out.
I don't got enough hair to experiment with and the Beagle don't neither. Wife does but she isn't willing to be part of my experiment.

Get your wife to ride in a convertible for 100 miles or so without putting the hair in a knot or something. It helps if you travel some of that at illegal speeds. Then you can see the untangling process big time.
Congrats Haven on a fear overcome. Try not to be a part of any "experiments" suggested by folks around here (jocko, bawanna). :D Although the suggestions on calibers to shoot and avoid seem to be pretty good advice.

Haven,
If you are recoil sensitive (I am due to a messed up rotator cuff from playing softball) watch out for the 30-30. I have a Marlin 336 that used to be my Dad's and became mine on my 13th birthday and it will bite you if not snugged up good to your shoulder. I put a slip-on rubber recoil pad on mine since even held properly it makes my shoulder hurt after 3-4 rounds. Have fun and enjoy!

Good for you Haven.
My wife's AR is the same type, collapsable stock and 16 inch barrel. She really likes it. She's kinda small (notice I didn't say short) and can adjust the stock to a position that is comfortable for her.
Keep on shooting it and you'll be able to hit a 4 inch target at 100 yards easy.

Grab hair into a ponytail like fashion in back of head, twist in upwards motion, clip.
To undo, clasp clip open. Hair falls out. Voila!
This was definitely not a fancy hair updo.
Now if your talking going to a wedding type hair do. Then it's pay a hair stylist to torture you for an hour or two pulling, twisting, spraying and using 500 hair pins.
To undo, pull hair pins out of hair for 2 hours. Then try to brush all snarls out from shellacked, hair sprayed mess for the next hour.

Your idea is better. We had a woman here, recently departed through no fault of her own that didn't use clips or pins or none of that stuff. She actually tied it, even used her own attached hair to tie like a pony tail but in a knot.

The saga continues....
Daughter came over today with her 270 for me to shoot. I shot it a total of four times....all hits within 1/2inch of the bullseye.....WooHoo for me! (Ok, so what if I was only 25 feet away and it has a darn good scope.....I'm still counting them darn it...lol).
After the fourth shot, I decided I didn't like shooting this nearly as much as the AR. It kinda hurt and now I have a bruise forming. I do bruise easily. So, I should have worn something with a bit more padding like someone reccomended. I think I'll stick with the AR for awhile.
I also don't think it right to keep using my Daughters AR. Soooooo.... I should probably go get myself one. :D

There are a lot of good AR's out there. I bought a Colt because, like Bawanna, when I think of AR, that's what comes to mind. If you just want to plink, there are very affordable DMPS AR's as well as other brands. If you want a doomsday zombie gun, you might want to step it up to something more top tier.

One plus to the AK is it shoots real meaningful bullets instead of the miniscule small varmint 223. They are ideal for the spray and pray crowd and I'm sure they hurt and leave a mark but when you want to get serious, a little wider bullet is a good thing.
The recoil is still mild.
If I ever get an AK and I will someday if I have enough days I'll get one with the wood furniture on it. That would make me very very happy.

The Windham is made by the "Original Maine Bushmaster" folks. My first AR was a "Maine made" Bushmaster A3 and the fit and finish was like a Lexus. Everthing was like it was hand fitted.
Got the wife a Bushmaster M4 style (recent NY production not original bushmaster folks) and although it functions well, you can tell not a lot of time was spent hand fitting anything. When you go to take it apart or operate the charging handle it's just not the same.
Bushmaster and DPMS were bought by Freedom group a while back and production was moved to NY.
Just thought I would mention it for what it's worth.

Yup, From what I understand Windham Arms is basically the same people that used to make the Bushmaster's.
Bushmasters closed their Maine plant and laid off all their workers. Many with over 25 years experience. So the laid off workers got together and opened Windham Arms. The newer Bushmasters are not made by the same experienced workers they used to have.

Really negligible differences in recoil between an AK and an AR IMO. SLight maybe.

I respectfully disagree. You can find Colts for $999 that cover every milspec apect for an AR. Their MPI and HPT inspection of every bolt and barrel is as good as it gets (they do not "batch" test). There are brands just as good for the price, but definitley not "better".
This chart (https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA&single=true&gid=5&output=html)is great for explanation of parts quality and build of certain companies' AR's that you can compare in this other chart (https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AqmgMm61Ok7WdExwaG16OENzOEZ1akp2a3Y2NjMxTEE&single=true&gid=2&output=html).

Yeah, I read that Freedom Group kept the Maine plant open for a few years and then when some contractual time limit was up they laid the experienced gunsmiths off to fill some production availability in NY.
I'm happy for the guy's and gal's in Maine and they will do well I think if they can make through the restart pains. I really wish them well as my first Bushmaster from them is a piece of art. And it shoots sub MOA all the time.
But in the end, hey, I hope freedom group and Windham all run full production and give Americans what they want and need. Long live the 2nd amendment.
