I've got one box of 50 and a box of 20 Speer 200 gr 44 Mag Short Barrel
I'm going to try out in the S&W 629 soon.
Most 44 special loads are anemic and 44 mag are more hunting power.
I've been on the lookout for a 44 Special with 45 ACP +P kind of power.
This heavy 44 Special looks promising.
240 gr at 950 fps should be a real thumper.

I don't blow through cases of ammo with the revolvers like my autos - LOL!
The autos launch the cases everywhere and I can only sweep up a small subset of what I shoot.
Several folks have asked me to send brass.

Nice to see this. Since Winchester dropped the Silvertip in 44 Special, this looks good.

I don't personally load .44 spl brass for my SRH (I would if it was all that I had), but I have a good friend that does... and I can trade .44 spl brass for .44 mag brass any day:D. If I want something in the .44 spl load range, it's pretty easy to do with .44 mag brass. Same concept for the .357 loads. I don't shoot .38 spl rounds in my .357 mag revolvers as a rule. Since I started loading for my revolvers, I just load 'em mild or wild as conditions may dictate in the "long brass". But, that said, I'd never turn down .38 spl or .44 spl brass as I can still make it very useful if need be.

I've tried a wide variety of 357 Magnum ammo.
Find I really love the mild Remington Golden Saber 125 gr. 357 Magnums.
The interesting thing is that full power 357 magnum ammo runs 1450 fps from a 4" barrel.
But only gets ~1200 fps from a 2" (-250 fps).
The Sabers are 1220 fps from a 4" and still get 1100 from a 2" (-120)
with much less recoil.
I'll take the Sabers every time!

But the real sweetness is from my M65 3" gun.
The Sabers are still going ~1190 (-30).
Plus they hit POA and super accurate from both 640 and 65 guns.

Hottest I could find a couple years ago was some Hornady (I think) 185gr jhp at 1000 FPS. So that's what I put in my snubby, Only bought 2 boxes, it was expensive, shot one and loaded my speedloaders and the snubbie with the other box. I keep my .44 and .45 brass I have dies for those calibers.

mr surveyor - If I find any 44 mag cases, I'll save them for you until I get enough to make up 100 rounds or so.

Underwood has a 200 gr bonded 44 Special rated at 1100 fps too.
It looks very similar performance wise to Speer's 44 Mag 200 gr Short Barrel round.

All the 44 fps are from 4" barrels though, not snubbie guns.
My S&W 629 Mountain Gun has a 4" barrel.

Oh I wasn't expecting 1000 FPS from the snubby, but that was just the hottest load I could find at Gander Mtn at the time. I expect I'm losing somewhere between 100 and 150 FPS with the 2.5" barrel, but that should still get the job done.
I don't want to run anything too hot thru the Charter Arms .44, no Elmer Keith loads thank you, it's not built for that. I do like to shoot about any .44 special thru my 6" 629 though, they are a creme puff out of that. As long as they're good quality stuff and not real dirty.

that would be very nice..... and I will pay the shipping. I'd bet you can get 300-400 pieces of 44 mag brass in the $10 USPS shipping box.:)

No problem but it might take a bit. Just don't see that many people shooting 44 mags at the range that don't reload. :(

I'll also check to see how much once fired empties are if you like. The range I go to does sell empties as a side line.

Personaly I think the Black hills 250grn Keith is hard to beat in the special.

t's only fitting that Black Hills Ammunition made a special run of Thunder Ranch ammo to go with it. The bullet is a 250 gr. Keith-style SWC that anyone who knows anything about .44 Specials agrees is a superior performer. It works handsomely on predators, regardless of the number of legs they may have.

For testing I used S&W Model 24 revolvers in 5" and 6.5" barrel lengths and a Colt SAA with a 5.5" barrel, all at 25 yards. My real Model 1926 ain't been fired and won't be anytime real soon.

Firearm BBL Vel Accuracy

S&W 24 5" 746 1.40"
S&W 24 6.5" 737 1.78"
Colt SAA 5.5" 736 2.13"

Underwood 44 Special is 240 gr JHP at 950 fps / 481 E from a 4" barrel
