View Full Version : What optics are you running on your AR (or AK)?

I know the go-to optics for AR's are Eotechs and Aimpoint, sometimes Trijicons. I like the Aimpoint's battery life, but the sight picture of Eotechs is awesome. I am trying to keep my budget at ~$400 (or less if possible). I am open to other brands, but really want something that will hold up. I am only looking 1X magnification, maybe 1-4X.

I have a Leatherwood/Hi-Lux red dot on my AK, and it is pretty darn good, but I really want something tried and true on the AR.

Any input?

This may not be what you are looking at but I put a Leupold 3-9x scope on mine that I got at Cabelas for about $175. I did spend about $60 on a good set of rings. It holds it's zero perfectly even if i take it off and put it back on and the optics are really nice for the price.

I have a 20" AR with a competition barrel and I wanted to be able to hit a quarter at 100 yards w/ every shot and the scope really does the job. We shoot clays at 100 yards w/ iron sights and then put on the scope and shoot all of the pieces. I tell the kids i don't want to be able to see any orange when they are finished and every shot needs to count.

I am looking more for red dot-type optics with no magnification. If I can hit center of mass at 100 yds, I'm good. The Magpul BUIS sights are actually really good on my AR, but I love the fast aquisition of red dots.

I can get an Eotech 512 or an Aimpoint Pro for just about 4 bills, but I do know Burris and a few others have some great offerings for a bit less. I guess I just wanted to know how dyed-in-the-wool any of you are for whatever you are using.

I'm using an Eotech XPS 2 that I bought off ebay for $413. There's another model I believe it's the 512.A65 that you can get brand new for under $400.

That looks cool. Can you co-witness with the front sight?

EoTECHS for me.

Seems most AR owners lean this way.

I'll check them out for sure.

The 512 is what I was thinking about, but that was a good price for your XPS2.

I posted this pic of my new AR on another thread, but here it is with my AK. It's a Colt LE6920MP-FDE. I am not going to pimp it out, just add a good optic and enjoy how light it is. The stock accessories are all Magpul.

The 512 made my SBR top heavy, and I haven't found a good enough deal on an XPS2 yet.

And the PA red dot will shoot COM at 200yds.

Close enough for zombie work.

Running a Vortex SPARC Red Dot (lists out around 200.00) with a La Rue Tactical quick release mount (although the SPARC does come with an integrated mount as well). Works great out to about 100-150 yards, even in sunlight. Absolute co-witness with the flip front and rear sights.

Nice looking guns. The XPS I bought was used (barely). When I received it I couldn't believe it wasn't new. Anyway there are deals on ebay but you can't be in a hurry. I just ordered a Mako 5X magnifier and Sight Mark flip to side mount. Should be here by Thursday. I'll post a pic when I get it all together.

I have a Stag Model 8 (with the 'Plus Package') with an EOTech EXPS2 in black that cowitnesses with my BUIS. Still looking for a sling, tac light, laser sight, and case. Sorry, no photos - all I have is the camera in my cell phone and the photos it takes don't seem to post well.

Probably going with the Eotech 512 unless I can find the XPS2 used for about the same price, but there are so many fakes out there, it's scary.

I did not like the XPS2. For me they are to fuzzy to look through. I feel the Acupoint is worth the money. You get what you pay for. The Acupoint, like the Eotech works close in and has range to it.

I picked up the EXPS3-4 today. Got a pretty good deal on it. It is small and allows a lot of room between it and my BUIS for a magnifier if I ever want it. FOr now, I think I might mount a Surefire Scout light and Magpul mount to my hand guard and be done with it. I don't want this to be a money pit.

But I like this Eotech A LOT.

The part I did not like is the "star burst" effect you see when looking through them.

Mine doesn't do it bad at all, but I like red dots dialed down a bit, not wide open looking like a flaming basketball :)

BTW, what's that small thing mounted on your rail in front of the Eotech?

Well any dang fool can see it's a 416 Whistlepoop magum. Duh?

Or maybe a 223. I've asked before about that stock but already forgot what he told me. Like to dress mine like that maybe someday.

The co-witness was almost dead on with the BUIS without must adjustment. Just need to get it to the range to finish dialing it in. Thanks to all who chimed in! Here it is...

Hey, Jeepster09, is that a SureFire 60-round mag? How about a review?

Also, from the other posting, who makes that little box-like laser? Review?

Thanks,

Snidely

The little box laser works AWESOME, I sighted it for 50 yards.

Yes a Surefre 60 round mag, it feeds perfect and makes the Bumpfire stock happy! I got it for $85.00 at Ahlman's.
